I arrived in Brisbane in my standard Asian outfit of shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. I realized pretty quickly that I looked out of place as it was pretty cold and most people were in suits heading to work. I headed to my friend John's flat who has been living in the city for the past few months coaching rugby at a local school. I spent 6 days in Brisbane and achieved very little other than buying a stack of warmer clothes to replace my unsuitable bag of thin t-shirts and boardies. Although I did not do much in my six days it was nice to stay in a pretty nice flat, hang out with a good friend and recharge myself for the rest of my Australia trip which I knew would not be so easy ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Kuta May 18th 2010

We left Luang Prubang on a long journey to Bali that would take us on 3 flights and a night in Kuala Lumpar. Our first flight was on Laos airlines which we had not heard good things about but as the alternative was a 19 hour bus journey we chose the 45 minute flight. In the end all the stories we had heard of old Soviet planes being used was rubbish as it was a safe modern plane and a very comfortable flight. We arrived in Kuala Lumpar at midnight which was a shame as all we got to do was grab a quick bite to eat, sleep and then get up 6 hours later to head back to the airport for our next flight. On arriving in Bali I was instantly struck by how westernized ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane May 7th 2010

Despite the horror stories we had heard about the journey from Hanoi to Vientiane our bus journey was surprisingly easy. I got a good 8 hours sleep (thanks to some lovely Valium) and the border was a breeze as long as you came prepared with the necessary fee and standard Asian $1 bribe/fee for the border official. In the end we arrived in the Laos capital in 18 hours a whole 7 hours earlier than expected. We instally liked the city which in stark contrast to Hanoi is very quiet and relaxed. It felt strange to wonder the streets without the constant noise of the bike horn which had been our daily companion in Vietnam. The city is very clean and has a strong french influence with bakeries and french restaurants dotting the street. After a ... read more

Asia April 27th 2010

Hue is very much a cultural town as it used to the countries capital during the Imperial era with the Imperial palace based here and a lot of old architecture (most of which unfortunanently was destroyed by American bombings during the war). However after our 2 days on the bikes we had no interet in culture as we were ready for a few beers to celebrate so after settling into our hostel we headed out to meet some people we had met in Hoi An and had a great night especially as Hue does not have much of a night life so most travelers head to the same few bars. The next day we headed out to do some sightseeing. The imperial palace was built in the early part of the 19th century and took 30 ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Central Highlands » Lam Dong » Da Lat April 18th 2010

The bus journey to Da Lat was by far the scariest I have done so far as after we had left the dusty roads running through the valleys we headed up into the mountains where the roads where steep, narrow and all had huge drops over the side. On top of this the driver felt it necessary to drive at the maximum speed possible for each corner - in the end it was better to just not look out the window! We arrived in Da Lat at eight in the evening. The first thing we noticed was that unlike everywhere else in South East Asia Da Lat was cool and in the evenings many would consider it cold. The town grew under the French rule as the French people in Saigon went to Da Lat for ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City » Cu Chi April 9th 2010

Our Vietnamese border crossing was at the newly opened border town of Ha Tien with a final destination of the island of Phu Quoc. We left on a journey that should have taken three hours from Shinoukville but in fact took six. A lot of the stoppages were unnecessary but we did not suspect what was to come. Upon arrival at the port at 12.58 we knew the boat was supposed to depart at 1pm but as there were 30 tourists who had all booked the onward journey to the island we assumed it wouldn't be a problem. Having exchanged our bus tickets for boat tickets we hurried down to the pier only to see the gangplank raised and the boat ready to leave. Despite the protests to the crew the boat did indeed leave without ... read more

Asia April 3rd 2010

The journey from Bangkok to Siep Reap was relatively painless considering it took 12 hours. The border was much easier than I had expected perhaps because thousands of Thai's go across the border every weekend to gamble at the numerous casinos that dot the post border town. Siem Reap is famous for the Ankhor temples which have only recently been 'rediscovered' as a tourist attraction following the end of the Cambodian civil war in 1999. We left to go to the temples at 5am as I have been told that you cannot miss seeing the sunrise of Ankhor Wat. The early start was definitely worth it as it was a truly spectacular sight. From far away the monument is incredible but close up you can see the years of degradation and lack of maintenance (or as ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don March 18th 2010

I headed to Phi Phi from Koh Lak with a desire for some beach and bar time. I had heard that Phi Phi is the place for this. The Island has always been reknowed as a travellers hotspot but since the movie the Beach was filmed there in 2000 it has now become one of the key islands to visit for a traveller in southern Thailand the number of vistors, bars, guesthouses on the island has increased massively over the last ten years. The island was bursting with people when I arrived it was definitely the most traveller orientated place I had been to so far. There was a really party feel to the place with the majority of the visitors coming I would say well under 25. The beach was the best I have seen ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Sok NP March 2nd 2010

I left Koh Tao to head over to Krabi to meet Joe who is a friend of a friend who is just finishing his year trip and has done the exact route as me but the other way round - I hoped he would have some handy tips and advice! I decided to get the night boat over to Surat Thani and a bus the rest of the way. The boat was certainly an experience 50 tiny beds crapped into a space that would normally fit prob 20-30 single beds. When i lay down my shoulders were well over onto the beds next to me (I know I am larger than the average bear but you get the idea) but this is all part of the travelling experience! In the end the bed next to me ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao February 23rd 2010

From Bangkok I headed down to Koh Tao learn to dive. I have always avoided diving because of my fear of the sea but one of things I said to myself when I left was to try and do as many of the things I have avoided before because I was afraid of them. I was learning at Bans diving school which I discovered is the biggest in the world as they qualify over 30,000 divers a year. Tao has a very relaxed atmosphere which was a very nice change to the bustle of Bangkok. I arrived at 5pm and my first evening was greeted with a nice surprise as my friend Jack from home who I knew has been on Koh Tao since July actually worked at Bans so that night we enjoyed a few ... read more
