So there I was, running full steam ahead straight towards a wild elephant. It was one of those surreal moments when in the back of your mind you are wondering whether you really should be doing this but you are totally committed none the less. I had spent the whole day touring Khoa Yai National Park with the promise of seeing an elephant in the wild and was starting to give up hope when the guide suddenly swung our truck around and just a few hundred metres away was a lone elephant in full view of the road. My group and I all bundled out of the van and viewed the beast from afar as it gracefully wandered along the horizon away from us. But ‘bird man,’ our crazy Thai guide, had other ideas. “My boss ... read more

We ended up going back to Ko Pha-Ngan for a week after Ko Tao but for a very different reason than the Full Moon Party that drew us last time. We booked ourselves in for a 5 day Yoga retreat to get some R&R and try and reverse some of the excesses of the last 3 weeks in Thailand. The retreat is run by an English couple, Teresa and Kes, who live there with their son Jesse. Teresa was waited for us at the jetty when we got off the boat and drove us to the retreat, about half an hours drive from the main port town. It is set in an idyllic location on a hill overlooking the sea and all the bedrooms and the Yoga platform look out onto the dense jungle behind. The ... read more

Dan, Shula, Hannah, Kerry. Paul and I moved to Koh Tao a couple of days after the full moon party for some rest and relaxation and the chance for me to get some diving done. I was really excited about the prospect of doing some diving as I got my PADI in Dubai last year and have not used it since. When we got off the boat, we were approached by a guy from Crystal Divers and after checking out their offices and being offered a deal for free accommodation on Sairee beach, I was all booked up for a refresher course and 2 fun dives the next day. I was pretty nervous about doing the dives because I couldn’t really remember much from the last time I did it but turns out its like riding ... read more

By the time I arrived in Bangkok and got a taxi to Koh San Road it was about 11 at night and apart from a few naps on the plane and in the terminal building I had not slept properly for about 40 hours. I had arranged to meet Hannah and Kerry at their hostel, unfortunately the taxi driver didn’t really know where it was so he felt it adequate to just drop me off in the right area and point me down a random road where it wasn’t. I ended up wandering around with my backpack lost and shattered and after about half an hour decided to just check into the next place I saw, when I heard my name being called from a nearby bar. It was Hannah and Kerry waiting for me at ... read more

My 16 hour bus journey to Mumbai went without a hitch and I managed to bag myself a bed at the salvation army for the length of my stay. My first couple of days I just spent walking around and exploring the city. The colonial architecture here is really beautiful and well maintained and I felt pretty safe on the streets on my own. It felt much cleaner and relaxed than the cities we visited in the north and although i still attracted constant stares from the locals it never felt intimidating...In fact I began to find it quite amusing at times and didn't realise how much I got used to it until I got to Bangkok a few days later and wondered why everyone was ignoring me. It is annoying though because you can not ... read more

We arrived in Hampi by sleeper bus from Goa. The journey took 8 hours and as we paid a bit extra for 2 tickets on the bus with beds rather than just reclining seats we thought we would at least get a bit of sleep and be traveling in relative comfort but we were wrong. The bus seemed to have been just gutted completely and MDF compartments for 2 had been knocked together and a mattress thrown in. Every time the bus turned a corner, Hannah and I would be flung from side to side in our rickety old compartment with fears of being thrown out into the aisle. I had high expectations for Hampi because so many people we have met have said that it is their favorite place in India and the minute we ... read more

Still getting used to the roughing it budgeting backpacker lifestyle I chose to fly from Kathmandu to Goa as opposed to getting the train for 3 days. I first flew to Delhi where I met up with Dee and then we flew together to Goa to meet up with Hannah and Kerry who have already been here for a week. They were waiting for us in a cafe when we pulled up in a taxi both looking amazingly relaxed, tanned and healthy in beach dresses and flipflops - a far cry from when we said goodbye on the streets on Kathmandu in Ski jackets and long johns! During my time there we visited 2 beaches Anjuna and Palolem. Palolem, although very touristy was most definately my favourite. It was about a mile long and fringed with ... read more

Hi Everyone! I’m in Katmandu now. Originally I was intending to spend just 5 days here but extended it for a week, as I just wasn’t ready to leave Nepal yet. The other girls left on the 10th for Goa and I will be flying out on the 17th to meet them for a bit of sunshine and relaxation. Was a bit hard to say goodbye to them because we have been together for nearly a month now but the group we met at Chitwan have adopted me and are looking after me well. I still cant actually believe that I have sacrificed a weeks tanning time to stay in Nepal! I am staying in Thamel, which is the backpacker area of Katmandu . It is basically a few streets with nothing but hostels, restaurants, bars, ... read more
