The Burnette region of Queensland has many small towns spaced only short distances apart. Each of these towns have an interesting history shared by way of various museums and old homesteads that have been made open to the public. Wondai has a couple of stops you should not miss. Wondai is the aboriginal word for wild dogs or dingos. The town has a bronze statue set around a billabong honouring this part of the history. Take time out to reflect the 150 years of change in these areas. From bullock carts and Cobb and Co, the arrival of rail (1901), an era that has given way to the modern motor vehicle. Wondai has a history founded on logging and farming, sheep initially, cattle more recently. Visitors should allow a half day to visit this little town. ... read more

The Brisbane Tramway Museum is located at Fernygrove, about 30 minutes by train from Central Station. We were fortunate that a resident in our community arranged a mid week private experience riding the trams, some over 100 years old, and learning something of Brisbanes history. These trams have had to be restored and are a credit to a devoted team who demonstrate great skill in restoring these important cars from our past. The Museum runs open days where trams are working, mostly at weekends, so phone to find out when they are open. There are a couple of trams under restoration currently and several fully restored working trams to try out. The oldest was built in 1901. This is a classic tram, and we must give credit to those who have restored, maintained and kept this ... read more

Marg and I jumped into our Horizon Motorhome and spent 6 days traveling from Brisbane to Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo, Guyar, Mann River, Casino and back home. The weather forecast was not good and night one we experienced a loud thunder storm. When we got to Dorrigo it looked like the weather was going to close in quite quickly. The Drive from Coffs to Dorrigo climbs up through the Great Dividing Range, past the Newell and Sherrard Falls and to the Dorrigo Rain Forest Centre. These are very old rain forests, a mixture of trees with tangled vines and buttress root systems supporting the trees in relatively shallow soil. There is a magical bird chorus in the forest, red necked pademelons on the fringes of the forest. There are many fungi and lichen varieties. Had the weather ... read more

Remembrance Day was truly a day to remember! The previous Sunday evening we caught the Jet Star red eye special from Perth to Brisbane for Marg’s niece’s wedding. The flight was over 2 hours late leaving, but was as good as you will ever get with only the odd pothole. Four hours flying time as against 14 days when we drove across in the motorhome, both cheaper and quicker! The wedding day was fine and warm, the ceremony and celebrations very family and intimate. We all know that brides scrub up pretty good, and Maree was no exception. Our niece has always had pretty eyes, and today they really sparkled. The ivory silk dress shimmered under the lights and was really quite glamorous. Corey, groom scrubbed up well too and glowed all evening, but I suspect ... read more

Some days life just comes up apples! That is so true of Donnybrook, home of the Granny Smith Apple. Actually it is quite a smart looking town with I reccon the best bakery in the south west. Just opposite the old Donnybrook railway station (now another good visitor info centre) is a bakery that has FANTASTIC BREAD and VALUE FOR MONEY CUSTARD SLICES for $2.50 ea. Donnybrook also boasts the greatest free children's playground in the world. A very busy haven for young and old complete with BBQs and covered tables etc. We free camped at Iron Rock Falls. Well, there wasn't much water when there so we had iron rock puddles. However, the pools make for interesting reflections with a novel colour shift. The free camp was fun with 5 groups spending the evening in ... read more

We told a number oif friends that we would visit Denmark just before Christmas. They all had visions of us seeing Princess Mary and her children at the supermarket etc. But we withheld that it was Denmark WA. Anyway, we made our visit and left with a chuckle. The town brochure is all about the greater district and its history and seemingly claiming all interesting sites from Cape Leeuin to Paris. (I exagerate only a little) Anyway, it is a picturesque town on a river with a fabulous park on the banks. The main street is great and a bakery is very well known for its quality breads and cakes. Not cheap, but very yummy and a great crowd queued up to buy. The gem is a little east out of town, so my photos are ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Albany October 28th 2011

Some times one thinks they should skip a spot to visit as it is out of the way, has a bad weather history and maybe seems to be insignificant. Do not think of Albany in that way or you will be the looser. Albany lived up to its windy/wet reputation as you will see in the photos, but still go - you nerver know your luck. Locals tell us this is unseasonably cold for the end of October. Albany is dominated by two lasting things - history and rocks! The city is built on a large rocky formation that creates two harbours and a third sheltered water area. The entrance is the King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour as well as Oyster Harbour. It is a relatively deep water harbour well protected from the prevailing ... read more

Good things come in small packets, and that is true of Walpole, a small town on the edge of two great national parks. After leaving Pemberton we drove south east and camped in the Shannon National Park. The Dept of Conservation camp here is FANTASTIC. Hot showers, realy good toilets, plenty of big sites and a true nature park atmosphere. We had plenty of visitors to our site - we caught some of the birds on camera, but missed Mrs Roo with Joey who bounded off before I could grab the camera. On driving out of the national park we had to dodge one snake and one large lizard. The Bicentenial Tree is part of the Shannon National Park and is one of the giant Tingle Trees with steps to a fire observation platform. Marg tried ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Pemberton October 21st 2011

Pemberton is a country town set amongs forests and fertile farm land. Tourism is a key part of the towns economy and offers all the usual facilities including a very informative visitor centre. The Pemberton Tram is a famous ride through the forests over an old logging track. An impressive steam loco is there also but looks to be under repair at the moment. Now for the good stuff. If you go to Pemberton - It is obligatory to go to the Lavender and berry farm. Rob had a blueberry pancake (small) and coffee, and Margaret had a lavender scone with jam and cream with her coffee. The pancake was a real dream and the scone was very nice - Marg bought another to take away. We camped in the Big Brook National Park under tall ... read more
