Some days have chuckles that set the tone for the day. After leaving the camp ground this morning nwe wanted to pop into the shops at Waurn Pond before travelling the Great Ocean Road from Torquay to Wye River. The first chuckle came when we saw 3 sheep solve the lack of grass problem. They were standing on top of a series of hay roles, happily munching what the farmer had put aside for winter. Goats climbing? Yes, but for sheep to get a meter up would have taken some effort. We were past in the MH too quick for a photo, so you will just have to immagine the funny scene. Now about Tom! He did it again today. He led us to within about 300 meters of the shopping centre, and then advised we ... read more

The cold snap that hit Victoria seems to have been replaced with a dry warm air flow making todays journey more summer like. We left Wonthaggi early and drove to Sorrento through rolling country. Marg shot some landscape from the MH while I drove, and the country is very very dry. Once again we saw that a lot of hay has been cut and stored for winter feed, but the pasture just has not recovered. Not far out of Wonthaggi is a sky diving club/airport. However, firstly read the sign - noy sure about this. Then, it seams a local trawler mistook the runway lights for navigation beacons and parked his boat on the airport. I have talked about my mate Tom Tom the Navigator. He nearly was buried at sea today after he led us ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Wilsons Promontory March 19th 2013

Marg and Rob both have observed (as escaped Kiwis) that Ausies love to abbreviate names, places, etc. The Prom is just another we have learned fron the locals at 'Thaggi. Today we traveled south eastfrom Wonthaggi down to Wilsons Promontary, or the Prom. The Country side is rolling cattle country, and after Victoria's hot dry summer, the pasture was very dry looking. Not sure what the cattle were eating, but I saw one long necked beast solve the problem by reaching through the fence and helping it self to hay from a hay bail in the stack. We drove through a little town on the way called Fish Creek. Saw the creek, and I doubt any self respecting fish would set up home here. The Prom is a lage national park, and its point is the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Philip Island March 18th 2013

Monday started with heavy cloud and showers, but gradually the sun came through. So the washing was done and The MH and trailer both got a much needed bath. Mary quoted the old Percil ad where 'you can really see the difference!' After lunch the weather cleared so we decided to drive to Phillip Island. There are numerous attractions on the Island - the Chocolate Factory, The Penguin Rookery, and the amazing coast which was the feature of the day for us. Well we confess to consuming excellent chocolate and seeing penguin as well. It was only a short drive from Wonthaggi to San Remo through rolling country side. Flocks of sheep more like seen in NZ, and cattle. At San Remo (small town) we crossed the bridge to Phillip Island. We planned to go around ... read more

Between Wonthaggi and Inverloch on the coastal road is Cape Paterson with its nasty twin reefs. Sunday dawned windy and cold, but the bleak rain of Saturday has moved on, and by the afternoon we had patches of bright sun. We visited the local Baptist Curch at Wonthaggi for Communion in the morning. Looks to be a historic building well maintained and modern facilities. Folk who greeted us were very friendly, and it is lucky we got there early as the ushers needed a shoe horn to get everyone in. In the afternoon we drove to Cape Paterson for a 'Sunday afternoon drive', or in my case (and Margs) another photo opportunity. I never tire of photographing the moods of the sea. Today the surf was running having had a strong southerly (chilly) wind for the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Walhalla March 16th 2013

Friday and Saturday. We left the coastal regions and headed inland on Friday morning, stopping at Sale for shopping, and then headed through Traralgon to Walhallor. The mountain road is twisty, but sealed all the way, presenting no travel issues. At the far north of town is a free camp with limited spaces for RVs and a tent site adjacent. Good facilities too. Valhallor was the Great Feasting Hall in Nordic mythology where half of the soldiers slain in battle found their rest. I'm not sure if Walhallor could be described as the great hall, but it is an interesting mix where this ghost town has elegant beauty, scarred by man, and regrown to great spleandour, but pock marked with awful tradgedy. Let me explain. Walhalor is in a narrow river valley, very steep contours, great ... read more

Wed 13-3-13. Todat we farewell NSW and head into Victoria on our journey. In yesterdays blog I included a portrait of Boyd, and today we went the extra mile to check out his folly here on the coast. 99% of tourists rush past this piece of history that stands tall and can be seen from Eden accross the harbour from Boyds Tower. Boyd had business interests in Sheep (marino wool and meat trade) as well as whaling. He wanted to build here his own town, wharf etc to send produce back to Scotland. The tower was built and he wanted a lighthouse mounted on the top, but the Government of the day said no! So the tower was only used to spot whales. It proudly bares his name on the top of the structure. (Stone was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Eden March 12th 2013

Have you ever wondered what the Garden of Eden looked like? According to the sign on the holiday park we have used we are right there. As RV parks go it is excellent, both in appearance and cleanliness. We are parked under some kind of fig tree. Tried out a couple of leaves but they were the wrong colour. (and size) We have heard of Eden for many years as a refuge for damaged yachts in the Sydney Hobart yacht race. We knew little else of this southern corner of NSW. As we had another sunny day, getting washing and servicing done on the motorhome was first priority, followed by a visit to the whaling museum. Some ask 'what kinds of things need servicing and doing each week?" There are many, inside and outside the vehicle. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Tilba Tilba March 11th 2013

Monday 11th dawned cool but yet another bright day which just got better and better. Today we back track a few kilometers to visit one of NSW's heritage towns and an old cheese factory. David knew of the ABC Cheese Factory also known as the Tilba Cheese factory and thought we should visit. Well, what a great decission that was. Central Tilba is only one kilometer from the Princes Highway, and really is a must see town. This little town had its origins in the 1800s when gold was found, but as the returns reduced, alternate employment was needed. As the area has a good rainfall, a cheese factory was established. The factory now is modern of course, but it manufactures a great variety of cheese - none of it bland like some big name cheddars ... read more

Saturday 9th, we headed south to Ulladulla on the coast. The morning was overcast but with patches of blue, and gradually cleared for a pleasant day. Ulladulla has a great protected boat harbour, back lit in the early morning photos. A quiet drive around town, tank filled again and we headed south to the larger centre of Batemans Bay. This was shopping day to top up the lardor, so having found a suitable park for the truck and trailer, we walked the 1k main street back to the supermarket. We splashed out on fresh cooked king prawns from the fishermans co-op shop - duly eaten for dinner same night. Very fresh and full flavoured. Make note, buy fresh prawns in batemans Bay whenver passing. Batemans may not be the prettiest town, but well serviced, fabulous real ... read more
