Monday 11th dawned cool but yet another bright day which just got better and better.
Today we back track a few kilometers to visit one of NSW's heritage towns and an old cheese factory. David knew of the ABC Cheese Factory also known as the Tilba Cheese factory and thought we should visit. Well, what a great decission that was.
Central Tilba is only one kilometer from the Princes Highway, and really is a must see town. This little town had its origins in the 1800s when gold was found, but as the returns reduced, alternate employment was needed. As the area has a good rainfall, a cheese factory was established. The factory now is modern of course, but it manufactures a great variety of cheese - none of it bland like some big name cheddars for example.
There was a generous variety to sample, staff knowledgable and helpful, and a superb product range. Their 3 yr vintage was great. I sampled their Fire Cracker cheese and foolishly asked where the fire was. Just wait 30 seconds and yuou'll find out. POW! The explanation is that it is the aftertaste that distinguishes excellent cheese from the also rans.
Not only did the cheese shop have a great range of cheese, but we also found a great variety of other things on the shelf, some produce based, others very helpful for campers with minimal space. I found a silicon sleeve to put over hot handles on frypans etc - I great thing for me as I have singed skin a fer times when doing a realy hot fry up on the gas cooker. Problem solved.
But Tilda is much more than the ABC Cheese Factory. This village is almost entirely built in the late 1890s, but the buildings have been carefully restored, and when I say restored I mean to the rough and rustic of rural australia of the era.
There is something to make you smile in every shop on the main street, actually, its the only street! Do yourself a favour and spend a couple of hours in this fascinating town. You will be so pleased you did.
From Tilba, we returned to the Princes Highway, headed south a few ks before heading out to the coast at Wallaga Lake, and then following the coast south through Bermagui, Tathra and out to Bega.
This was a tiring but fun drive. Not many Ks, but the rolling country and some steep inclines kept the drivers busy. One corner was so tight, I engaged first gear to get around. David was just ahead of me and had similar issues with the steep incline and hairpin bend. But the journey was well worth the effort running through both farmland and national parks plus some great sea scaped to admire.
It is no wonder that NSW brags about the southern coast, it is gorgious.
For those who are politically minded, we passed Keating Road and Gillard Bay. Both looked to be narrow one way roads!
Bega Cheese has to be one of the Big Names in cheese, and we did buy some beautiful Humming Bird Cake at the cheese shop. But when it comes to cheese, go to Tilba!
Being cheesed out, we then followed the Princes Highway to Eden and had Fish and Chips and Humming Bird Cake for dinner, accompanied by a little wine from Two Tails wineries.
