Central America Caribbean » Jamaica » Negril March 1st 2012

Greetings from Negril. Life is a little slower this week since our friends headed back to Edmonton on Tuesday. Lots more reading, cross word puzzles, dominoes and card games! However, we still enjoy our daily walks on the beach, swimming in the ocean and watching the Jamaicans go about their daily business. One of the highlights here is the many live reggae concerts held on the beach. The only problem is they don't get started until 11 p.m. just when we are heading to bed. I guess the concerts are not for the senior citizen!! However, there is reggae music playing everywhere so we do get into the goove of it. Reggae gusy with megaphones walk the beach everyday advertising the shows. We have tried some of the authentic Jamaican food that is offered at many ... read more

This morning I sit in awe at a little restuarant table sipping a tropical smoothy next to our resort looking out onto the beautiful calm aqua blue ocean and sugary white sand. The scene never ceases to amaze me!! Week two was great in Jamaica! A highlight for us here is the beach as you can see by the pictures. Negril Beach is 7 miles long and never a dull moment. Many days we walk about 4 kms east along the beach. the Jamaicans selling their wares are fun and they are anxious to invite you to look. Wood carvings, beachwear, jewellery, massages, jerk chicken and everything you can imaagine are set out on the beach. As well many of the vendors trudge up and down the beach keen to make a sale. Hi Everyone!! We arrived safe and sound in Jamaica on Saturday afternoon after some bizaar overnight flights. Oh well, coming back to Jamaica is worth a few red eye flights!! A funny thing was that we had to circle Jamaica for 30 minutes while they repaired a pot hole on the runway!! But we landed safely and our friends Gary and Carol from Edmonton arrived a few hours later and soon we were on the shuttle van on the way to Negril with a red stripe in hand!!! Our driver, Carlton gave us a little commentary along the way which was great. To us, Negril is like paradise!! As we set our eyes on the white sand beach and crystal clear blue aqua water we knew why we wanted to return again. As well, the vibe ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Bay Islands » Roatán February 7th 2012

Today brings us near the end of our stay in Roatan. It was a fairly quiet week, but we seemed to do a little of everything. We had four days of cloud and rain off and on which made for puddles all over but we manged to survive! Other than that we have had the perfect tropical weather. A highlight for me on Roatan as you probably have gathered is the easily accessible and amazing snorkelling. I can't even count the number of times we've ventured into the beautiful blue ocean. With the reef within swimming distance all around the island, it's always ready and available. The water is crystal clear, the coral is beautiful and varied and there is an abundance of sea life. We've met some new friends who live on the island 6 ... read more

Hello fellow readers! This week we took a tour of the east end of the island with Lisa. It was great in that she is a wealth of information about all areas of the island. Also, the places we saw and experienced are kind of off the beaten path, that the average tourist wouldn't see. Our first stop was "Sandy Bay" where we watched the dolphins frolick for a few minutes at Anthony's Key. Next we continued on to French Harbour which is the second largest city and the educational center of the island. Cruise ships dock here as well as it is a center for international shipping. The next stop was fun! - The Iguana Farm - The family that runs it started out with one iquana as a pet and ended up with literally ... read more

We've had another great week on Roatan. Each brings new discoveries and experiences! Early on in the week we took a water taxi to West Bay which is the next beach south of where we are living. The area is one of the loviest beaches we have seen with pure white sand and crystal clear water. The only down side is that it's very touristy with lots of resorts and hoards of people from the cruise ships spending the day. In saying that, you can't beat the superb snoreklling with the reef only 100 meters from the shore. The coral and fish were amazing. We enjoyed a lunch of conch ceviche and fries and taxied back around 5. It is interesting to watch the construction going on the main sand road in West End. They are ... read more

Hola from Honduras!! Hard to believe we have been away a week already. We've had a fantastic time so far - near perfect weather and climate and very friendly people. Our flight into San Pedro Sula on the mainland went smooth. We flew from Fort Lauderdle on Spririt Airlines which flies around the southern States, Central America and the Caribbean. Luckily our overnight hotel provided a shuttle from the airport as it is probably not the safest city to be wandering around in!! Villa Neuira was a former army barricks, heavily walled and guarded and turned into apartments with two gigantic pools whichwe lounged at the next morning. That afternoon we took a 16 passenger shuttle plane over to the island of Roatan. Lisa and Suart who manage our condo met us at the airport and ... read more
