There are shifting shoals, shifting goals and always the boat shifting on its mooring. Just when you think you've got it figured out, something changes...and changes again. For some of us, blogging has the feel of time shifting. Past, present continuous and future perfect all get rolled together when we're trying to make a coherent report of our activities. It seems that wherever we are, we start taking root. There's always a bit of us left behind with new land friends, old friends visiting to make new memories, and new cruising friends who loop in and out. There's also quite a bit left behind in the literal sense, as we drop things off at each landing. We continue to weed out our storage, supplies and equipment, hoping to make things run a little smoother. The Marine ... read more

Friends have been giving nudges, wondering where we are. So it's time to check-in while we can, before we start cruising again. We're still in Vero Beach, on a mooring ball, quietly working on 'projects', a boater term for 'fixing the boat'. Anyone who has ever had a boat (or car, motorcycle, house or cottage) will understand perfectly. Although the boat may work well, there is always a list of things that need tweeking or upgrading. For cruising boaters, when you find an agreeable spot with mooring balls and machine shops, it's definitely time to do projects. Close to West Marine... bonus! But no-one can work day and night, so the evenings, starting in the early afternoons, are a good time to socialize with other boaters, share a meal and play a few tunes. It's amazing ... read more

With the arrival of new pictures we would like to say more about the special folks in this time and place. Sorry for the high sugar content in this entry, but these people turned a bad experience into an unforgettable holiday. First we say hi to the good doctors, Eddie Rosado and Michael Murphy and the staff at the Shoreview Urgent Care. Thanks to you, Frank is doing great. We send hugs and kisses to Joanne Morgan for standing by us, tooting us around, and supplying these lovely shots with her 35m yardsale camera! Our times with Ted and Diana were sparkling memories. The appearance of Lea and Byron from home was an extra special gift. Sorry we have no pictures of Jesse, Allen, Alan and Beverley Smith and Rachel but we really appreciate all your ... read more

The winter of 2008/9 was 'memorable' for us as we completed the final preparations for our long awaited trip. Our choices were few. We tried to save our boat from being locked in to a potentially unstable marina. Instead, we chose to be almost locked in to the ice by unprecedented cold and snow at a stable marina. Frank's unbelievable ice patrol was the outcome for many months. Contrast Frank... same time next year, in the dinghy at Vero Beach City Marina, making a template for anchor roller modifications. The sun was pretty bright so Ginger had to wear her UV shades while she supervised the project. Any questions about our choices and state of mind? Yeah, well okay... the water bowl was frozen a week ago so we're not giving our long johns away and ... read more

27 39.297 N 80 22.282 W ICW mile 952 The Vero Beach City Marina is a super spot. We're moored on a ball for @$15 in a sheltered harbour, with free bus service to the beach and town. What could be better for cruisers? Well there's an extire roomful of washers and dryers... and they work! AND the temperature is quietly creeping up into the 60's F with higher promised in a few days. Woohoo! Many boaters have left since we arrived on Tuesday because they finally have a window to jump outside at Fort Pierce and scoot to south Florida or straight to the Bahamas. Some have been waiting here inrelative comfort since November. It still gets better. We're meeting people that we've seen before and some of them play music. Tonight is a potluck ... read more

31 02.800 N 81 25.354 W ICW 685 Yes...we made it past the Ben Sawyer Bridge in time. We stopped last night at Jekyl Island, Jekyl Harbour Marina, to visit travel mates Bob and Nancy on the RACHEL J. Feeling lazy today after a dinner party last night, we're slow casting off. A couple who keep their boat in the Mediterranean dropped by and there's lots to learn and notes to compare. When we're done chatting we'll be heading out toward Florida. Melodeon has been logging 50 to 60 miles per day as we pursue our quest for warmer weather. There is talk that the Canadians brought their freezing weather with them. The 20's F with wind chill down to the 10's makes us really glad we have a wood stove and a diesel stove on ... read more

33 11.561 N 79 16.328 W That's insider talk for Minim Creek East, South Carolina, AKA ICW mile 416. There wasn't as much time to blog at Carolina Beach, NC as we had hoped! In fact, there wasn't any after the dynamic people on Pleasure Island kept us hopping. Fortunately with all the attention (and dinners) Frank did major healing and now we're back on course, with lots of help from 2 new friends and experienced sailors, Paul and Dawn. 'Twas very hard to say good-bye after 3 weeks as we cast off on Tuesday. Making about 60 ICW miles per day, we expect to sneak up on the elusive and much discussed Ben Sawyer Bridge tomorrow, for a 'swing' before 4 pm. This should put us in Charleston, SC in time for a city tour ... read more

This seems the right time to say more about the the fun we had at Moorhead City, NC at ICW mile 205. We arrived Friday, Dec. 4th, 2009 and docked at the impressive dock at the Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant. There we met friendly fellow boaters, with whom we shared dinner and stories. With the marine supply store and the other essentials a block away, we decided to stay Saturday and let the latest nasty wind blow over. The neighbouring harbour was lined with fancy, fishing charter boats, powerful sightseeing boats and lively seafood restaurants. At dark on Saturday night, Dec. 5th, we were startled as a crowd suddenly gathered on our semi-private dock. "Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday!!!" they shouted boisterously as a mini-flotilla of boats, beautifully decorated with lights and costumes, motored past, honking ... read more

Apparently we're just not the daily blog type of folks. This is no surprise to me because my journals sometimes skip months or years. Frank says he hasn't started yet. Perhaps we've been too busy getting about, with not much time to reflect. For years my photos were called 'mood' pictures because I only got the camera out when it was too rainy or foggy to do anything else. Hopefully this has changed a bit but I notice that most of the pics are BLUE. Our last blog was at Mile Hammock Bay. So we now miraculously reappear at the lovely, upbeat Carolina Beach, North Carolina. Due to unfortunate circumstances... there will be time to blog. This blog is the story of our day, Monday, Dec. 7th, leaving there before dawn, winding up at 10:30 p.m. ... read more
