Thank goodness! Boating... not boat-yarding!!! So glad to report that we're southing ourselves ASAP. We're gobbling up miles on the ICW. Trying to blog on the Blackberry. Reporting from Daytona. Photos for fun. We'll see. ... read more

Some of us are lucky to be able to blog and say Happy Holidays to the folks 'away'. (Okay, I know we have put that expression on the opposite foot but you might be 'away' too.) Also, it's time for the get up and go mode after a long hiatus on solid ground. Refitting continues at a brisker pace, while another big Publix bird is roasting in the oven, with sweet potatoes, which are wonderfully plentiful here. We have been lucky to share the company of many terrific people while in Jacksonville. Some have taken us around to see the Christmas sights and lights, a nice way to end the year. After our quest to escape snow, we are flabbergasted to see that people in Florida act as if it is a major part of the ... read more

Woohoo! Dec. 1st is the first day of the boater friendly half year in the south. That doesn't mean there can't be a severe storm, but the chances of the tropical variety are very slim. There haven't been any serious warnings in Florida for weeks. Now we start with the winter gales and chilly (read COLD) weather with wind warnings at night. That's only fair for December. It's strange to have a 60 degree Fahrenheit range,; more continental weather than coastal. We have had weather in the 80's one day and 20's F with hard frost warnings the next night. Hard frost is at least 4 hours below 27F. Considering our Canadian context... we are NOT complaining. Just happy when the sun shines. The diesel stove was lighted for the first time in months this week, ... read more

We're still on the hard with lots to do on the boat but the lists are getting shorter. Sadler Point Marina is a beautiful place with friendly, helpful people, so it's an ideal spot to dodge hurricanes and upgrade your boat. Currently I'm sitting with a blanket over the computer, doing wifi in the boatyard. Not so bad. 80sF during the day and 60s at night. Looking forward to a marine yardsale this coming Saturday where we can 'pass on' a half ton of treasures that we've jettisoned from the boat. Now we have a better idea of what we need and what is superfluous to our current lifestyle. Having the truck has made a huge difference to our present lives. We are able to get supplies, visit people and sort out the things that aren't ... read more

Do you remember the reliable old formula in English class for writing a good story? Apparently you do. Your feedback on our blog has been that you want more of the w's, more often. Who? Chris, Frank and Ginger Bear, saluting family and friends on our journey What? On a road trip back to Melodeon from Ontario Where? Started in the parking lot of a wifi challenged inn in Mocksville, North Carolina and finished in wifi deluxe Hilton in New Bern, NC. No more wifi dysfunction. This blog will be posted tonight. When? Real time, October. This time last year we were a short week away from shoving off. Why? Because, for us, the best thing about boating is the people you meet travelling, as well as the people you rediscover at home. If you get ... read more

You haven't heard much from us lately so this is a quick hello. Besides, it's summer at home in Ontario and you've probably got better things to do than stay indoors and read blogs about people wearing 70 UV sunscreen, white jackets and really big hats at the beach. : ) We reached another one of those places, Cumberland Island, where even the Verizon air card just wants to give a very weak signal to the outside world. Before that I made the fatal error of writing a whole blog without a title...gone. You will have to wait to hear us raving about Fernandina Beach, the great bicycle and scuba stores, and about losing the dinghy in a storm. A few days ago we moved on to Jekyll Island, where there's lots of exploring to do. ... read more

... you might want to visit this lovely old city for a few days. It's touted as the oldest city in North America. Yes, we did make it to St. Augustine by anchoring in the harbour south of the Lion's Gate Bascule Bridge, despite warnings about currents from our cruising guides. As we were out staring hopefully at our newly set anchor, we had an awesome experience. A pair of huge manatee swam slowly past the bow of the boat, noses out to breathe before they disappeared. We took it as a good omen and also congratulated ourselves for observing the SLOW SPEED Manatee zones posted in many places on the ICW. The St. Augustine City Marina staff and facilities are very welcoming. $10 a day to tie up your dinghy gives access to lovely showers, ... read more

Sunset. Slow...ing... down. Sleeping. Cruising can be a pretty hectic, if you let it. Even if you don't... it can still be frenetic. So... now we're getting the idea to schedule quality time with nature; our natures and the bigger one outside our hull. In terms of our progress we've been on a strict schedule, one day of motoring and 1, 2 or 3 days of hanging out in easy anchorages. Time to rest, heal, absorb, regroup, study, and internalize all the experiences... not to mention relaxing and reading a book. Yesterday in Daytona Beach we had a high impact day when our pretty red anchor marker jammed around the rudder. The solution was to put out a rear anchor so Frank could dive under and winch the blighter out. It took 3 hours including breakfast. ... read more

Manatee? We'd read about these 'gentle giants'; 1200 pounds of mammalian, warm-blooded, breast-feeding, air-breathing, family-oriented, sea-dwelling life-force. I once knew a professor in university who was excited about getting the opportunity to do manatee research in Florida, but that was the extent of my prior knowledge. The reality was a 'huge' wake-up call. At every bridge and juncture you see manatee warning signs on the ICW in Florida. But we didn't see any. Friends drove us to visit the manatee centre in Fort Pierce but the manatee, who usually hang around the waste heat areas of the power plants, were nowhere to be seen. This scenario, in a strange way, brought to mind our Canadian tragedy of homeless people trying to take shelter around steam pipes in big cities to stay alive during bouts of sub-zero ... read more

The sky is literally in charge of our water world. Whether sailing, cruising or moored, we tend to check the weather channel every few hours, just to hear what warnings our highly parental weather robot has for us, locally and abroad. The language is polite, formal and sometimes archaic. You must learn to listen carefully to dechipher the double negatives and turns of phrase which can be totally misleading. You might hear things like: "There is an excellent chance the that much less than all of the conditions for a really first class thunderstorm will not be met within the next 12 to 24 hours." Don't even think of listening to this clever, electronic sooth-sayer during happy hour! Because you are listening to automated, canned speech the huge range of human nuance and inflection are absent ... read more
