August 25th 2006

We arrived safe and sound in India on August 21st! My first few days in India have been wonderful and relaxed. Though I was prepared for the incredible heat that everyone warned me about, I was pleasantly surprised that it was much cooler here than in Cambodia. We were greeted by the warm smiling faces of amma, appa and vassu mama. The airport was not very crowded as ours was the only flight arriving at that time so we quickly got our luggage and made our way home to Basat Nagar. Even the traffic was much less than I expected. I found out quickly however that I spoke too soon about the traffic in India. What can I say other than it is completely crazy......cars, buses, bicycles, motor scooters, people walking, and most dangerous of all ... read more

August 20th 2006

August 20th We entered Angkor by a Tuk Tuk (motorized cart) and discovered that this was a better way to experience the surroundings. Our itinerary today was Ta Prohm, Preah Khan, Banteay Kdei and the Sras Srang (a large lake). We toured the temples leisurely stopping frequently. The temples were an architectural delight and we took plenty of pictures. We returned to the hotel for a brief break and headed back in late afternoon to visit the crown jewel of Angkor-Angkor Wat! Angkor Wat was a Hindu Temple devoted to Vishnu and was built between 1113AD and 1150AD by Suryavarman II. The outer limits is bounded by a broad water filled moat. The total dimensions of the temple is 1.5 km x 1.3 km making this the single largest religious monument in the world. Subsequently the ... read more

August 18th 2006

August 17th: We decide to head out of Bangkok and are dropped at the Airport by the local hospital rep for Astra Zeneca. We took our chances to find a plane to Siem Reap. The latter is the second largest city in Cambodia and home to Angkor Wat a 1000 year old monument dedicated to Hindu and Buddhist spiritual traditions. We secured a ticket the same day but only by delaying our departure to India. We left the same day at 730PM to arrive at Siem Reap at 9PM. August 18th: Cambodia as we expected was very different. The airport looked immaculate but we (Sanjay) knew what to expect as Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world. We took a local cab ride costing $5. We lodged at the Angkor Diamond Hotel. We ... read more

August 14th 2006

We took a 4 hour plane ride to Bangkok and arrived at 810PM on August 13th. We tried to make the overnite train to Chiangmai by literally running to the train station (close to the airport) but could not secure tickets. We then elected to take the plane-a 55 minute ride that left at 1030PM and arrived at Chiangmai..where it was raining cats and dogs. We took at cab to the River View Lodge a very nice small lodge by the River Ping. The rain stopped the following morning although it was still overcast. We rented a scooter at the hotel we stayed at and left after a delicious breakfast at our hotel for the Wat Doi Suthep . Wats are thai Buddhist temples. The Wat Doi Suthep is perhaps the most famous Chiangmai Wat and ... read more

August 12th 2006

We spent the last 2 days exploring the immediate vicinity of where we were staying. We walked all around savoring the sights and sounds that have now become so familiar to us. The sounds of Balinese music in temples and the traffic down main street (Jalan Hanoman, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Jambavan). We spent a nice evening in the monkey forest where the inhabitants run loose and hold court every day..they are visited by the local human beings who are eager spectators of the endless frolicking and antics that the monkeys put on display. The monkeys seem to love coconuts and the stronger ones spend a lot of time tearing the coconut to get to the meat. Several tried to get close to us and one actually sat on Kyles head.... read more

We are back in Ubud, which feels like home for us. The streets are busy with life and there always seems to be some kind of enchanting traditional Balinese dance or music being performed, which we can even hear from our room at night. We have enjoyed Bali so much that we extended our stay two more days! ... read more

August 10th 2006

After a few days we were ready to head back to Ubud. Our journey back lead us high up into the mountains close to Kintamani. We drove through slopes where there were several varieties of fruits, coffee, and cloves are grown (plantations). We enjoyed freshly cut mangos (Sanjay’s favorite), passion fruit (Kyle’s favorite), and tamarillos. Also on the way back we stopped at the Tirtha Temple close to Tamparksiring where many people come to bath in the holy water that pours forth from a natural spring. ... read more

August 9th 2006

We had the most amazing views of the Java Sea. Each morning we would rise early enough to watch the spectacular sunrise over the sea as hundreds of fisherman would direct their boats back to shore with their catch of the day. Amed is a popular destination for divers so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to freshen up on our diving skills. This was our first shore dive and it certainly put our balancing skills to the test, walking over larger slipper rocks while equipped in our dive gear (including oxygen tanks). The visibility was somewhat poor but we were able to see beautiful coral and a variety of ocean life surrounding on old shipwreck (U.S. Liberty). Our dive master is a friendly Balinese Hindu called Made who immediately after the dive had to leave ... read more
