February 6th 2009

Thursday, 5th I woke up to a freezing morning in Queenstown. The wind blowing from the lake was icy and I had to put on all my warm clothes as I had my morning devotion by the lake side. It takes a while for the sun to peek over the mountains, and the temperature started going up immediately as it did. I parked my car a bit away from the town centre and set about walking through all the streets. I poked my head into a few souvenir shops and was astounded by how expensive things are down here! I guess with all the tourists and their stronger currency that is to be expected. It didn't take me long to walk through every street and I moved on to the Queenstown Gardens. It is situated on ... read more

Tuesday, 3rd As I only have the car for a couple of days I figured I'd better make the most of it, so I set off to Franz Josef Glacier some 469km / 8 hours away. Just outside of town I saw to hitchhikers, I wanted to stop and pick them up, but didn't. As I drove away I had the gut feeling that I should go back for them. I turned around and picked them up. It turned out to be a mother and her daughter, Andrea and Johanna Hertwich. They were on their way to Murchison, and it was on my way. They are from Germany and immigrated ten years ago. They live on an organic farm just outside of town and went into wellington do get a passport. We had some interesting conversation ... read more

February 2nd 2009

February Sunday, 1st I packed my backpack and cleaned my flat and said a sad goodbye to everyone at El Rancho. It has been a life changing experience for me. I've met some amazing people and made some new friends. Thank you all for making my time here truly memorable and for all the knowledge and experiences. You will be sorely missed! Aimee gave me a ride to the train station in Paraparaumu and I got on the train to Wellington. On the train I reflected on the road past and the road that lies ahead. With sadness and excitement I arrived in Wellington. I spent my last night with Clive, Lize and Maryke. Clive whipped up a stunning seafood pasta and we had a last couple of beers. I realized I hadn't booked my ferry ... read more

January, 2009 Friday, 2nd I left Clive & Lize’s at 7am, not realizing it’s a public holiday and the busses only run from 08:30. I phoned a taxi and was at the train station in a flash! Public transport rocks! I took the train, and various other modes of transportation including my feet to El Ranch (Waikanae Christian Holiday Park). I checked into my flat, aptly named The Ritz, unpacked and set about exploring the grounds with a map. I walked around for about 2 hours, including the 20min walk to Waikanae beach. The grounds are huge and it’s really beautiful here. I stood and watched as Sam and Burnie took some kids from the motor camp Go karting. I observed how they interacted with the kids and their parents, quite interesting. After the session I ... read more

Tuesday, 29th Lize & Maryke took me sightseeing today, Wellington is really beautiful. We started our circumnavigation at Newtown, where Clive & Lize used to live, and from there to Island Bay. I interacted with the wildlife, as is custom, and we could see the Southern Alps on the south island from there. We drove around to Lyall Bay to watch the planes take off from Wellington Airport. It's weird, standing on a beach seeing planes take off and landing. PS: Go check out some of the crazy landings on Wellington Airport on You Tube! We cruzed all around the harbour side and finally went up to the lookout point on Mount Victoria. You get the most spectacular view of the city from up here, a definite must see if you ever come this way. Wellington ... read more

December 28th 2008

December 22nd Johan dropped me off at the bus terminal and I took the link bus to Rotorua, where I had to wait 3 hours for the bus to Wellington. I walked around town and got some snacks for the road. A lot of things have been happening in me and one of the biggest things is the fact that I truly, utterly love Vicky. Being in NZ and exploring the country and finding myself is amazing, but I want her by my side, traveling with me, experiencing everything with me. I finally had the guts to tell her this and to commit to her, from underneath a big tree in the Rotorua, 12000km away. I love you baby! In high spirits, I boarded the bus to Wellington. The drive down was great, I had two ... read more

Saturday, 20th I said my goodbyes to the Gerbers, and Aubrey took me for a great breakfast at the Sands Diner, I think. He dropped me off in a park near the Pak n Save where I waited for Johan, my fathers nephew. He met me there around 15:00. we dropped my backpack at his house in Mount Maunganui & set of to Rotorua for some sightseeing. As you drive into Rotorua, you become aware of a strange smell. Not so much a bad smell as a HORRIBLE smell! I imagine it is what hell will smell like, very sulfurous! (because of all the volcanic activity) We stopped at an amusement park, where we saw the dinosaurs. It was quite windy and rainy as we got into town, so we just quickly hopped out for a ... read more

I am so glad I listened to God, because just ouside of town a small camper pulled up beside me. The driver said he's going to Matamata, to the Hobbiton set from Lord of the Rings & Taurange is on his way. His name is Bas Poppe, from the Netherlands. he is on a 9 month spiritual journey accross the world. We had the most amazing conversation about life, love, relationships, God, religion en everything else. It was like we've been friends for years! We stopped for coffee in Waihi at the Kava Café & he bought me the best cuppaccino I have ever had. ... read more

Tuesday 16th, I had a very interesting day, set out from Hahei, my plan to visit Hot Water Beach, 10km away, or wherever the road takes me. I got pickup just outside of town by a very friendly lady named Carra. She dropped me off at the SH26, which would take me to the SH25 on my way to Tauranga. I walked for about 1km & was picked up by a older couple thats originaly from the UK. Very friendly & very interesting people. They've been in NZ for three years & is on there way to go live somewhere else. They have lived all over the world. They droped me off in Thames. Its a bit of an industrial town so I deceided to head out to Tauranga on the SH26. Out of town three ... read more

December 15th 2008

Sunday, 14th I'm staying at the Hahei Holiday Resort in Hahei/Cathedral Cove. Its a rather huge campsite & from the look of things kiwi's & other travelers love campervans, the place is stacked with them! I, on the other hand definitely have the biggest & best tent around, but more about that later. Unlike my day, the first night here was uneventful, just had a relaxing time on the beach. These beaches are really beautiful & the bays you look out on is spectacular, with little islands strewn all over the place. The only thing I'm not used to is the weather. It changes a very quickly & the wind never stops blowing! Monday, 15th Woke up today, tired & stiff from my long hike the previous day & a bit drained emotionally. I thought a ... read more
