Oragutans !
Oragutans !
These orangutans are being rehabilitated, this is the Betty Ford clinic for monkeys !
Arrived in Kuching late at night, but even in the dark this place seemed really welcoming...and we were not mistaken. Spent the rest of the next morning having a general mooch around this little city by the river and then headed off to the organutan rehabilitation centre ("they tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no") in the afternoon. We knew it would be feeding time but because they have free roam of acres of land there is no guarantee of any of them turning up (banana overload). However we were pleasantly greated by around [View Full Entry]

Monkeying around
Jacky and Jon go native
How long do you go ...

Made it to the big smoke having spent several hours appreciating the rest of the Cameron Highlands on the bus journey. Slumming it with the accomodation this time you'll be happy to hear guys, with a shared bathroom! Kuala Lumpur is a fairly large city as you can imagine but is still fairly walkable, even if half of the walking is in the countless air conditioned malls they have..... ohhh we just can't keep away from that air con! Managed to make it up the Petronas Towers (level 42 for all you 80's throw back kids) for an amazing view of [View Full Entry]

Tellytubby land or what?
Tellytubby land or what?
The rolling tea plantations
The journey to the Cameron Highlands was very understated in our lonely planet guide, it was breathtaking ! Had a couple of days in a cooler climate but also less mozzies so thats better. This is a tea producing region and as the pictures show it looks like telly tubby land. Amazing scenery and we drove to the highest mountain in the area to get a fantastic view. We had a guide who took us into the Mossy forest, which was very mossy. Within a short walk (About 100 yards !) he showed us about 10 useful plants and trees for [View Full Entry]

Flew into Penang, an island off the west coast of Malaysia (obviously via Singapore for the second time...only another 3 times through that blooming place to go). Though we arrived late it was the kind of place you could wander the streets at night, with a back pack and not feel like a sitting target! Had a lovely taxi driver who was so impressed that there were tesco's outside of Malaysia that the thought of a 24hr tesco's in the UK was nearly too much for him! We had a couple of nights at the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (jacky chose [View Full Entry]

The famous Angkor Wat
The famous Angkor Wat
Truely stunning
Backpacking around the world is rough. We stayed for 3 days in a luxury hotel in Siem Reap close to the famous Angkor Wat temples. It was part of a package and Jacky was rather excited by all the extra bits that we had with it (Many many vouchers). These included massages, swimming, free cocktails (Happy hour whatever the hour !) and a tuk tuk driver at our desposal. Oh yeah and the ancient ruins ! The temples are stunning as a few photos should hopefully give you an idea, the pyramids have nothing on this place in our opinion ! [View Full Entry]

Damn impressive building, I think Buckingham doesn't have a patch on these !
Got through the border and made it to Cambodia, capital city Phnom Penh. A real chilled out place (Even though this is the capital) and the people are soooo polite and lovely. Smiling faces were ever you go. The country itself has a terrible history. We went to see a local school which had been used as an interrogation centre for the Pol Pot era and it just leaves you cold. Such attrocities were commited by the Kymer Rouge in a short period of time. We then went to the killing fields today and you really get a feel for the [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Saigon at about 6am after a restless nights sleep. Jacky slept fine but I have taken an instant dislike to sleeper buses, rather than space age they are more like being a cat in a washing machine. This sounds strange but if I was shorter I would have been more comfortable ! (Yes me being shorter !) Jumped straight on another bus to a kinda mystery Mekon delta tour, did not learn much about the delta itself but went on a big boat, small boat, horse and cart and coach all in one day. Managed a bee farm, odd [View Full Entry]

This one wasn't posionous... two out of three ain't bad as they say !
Made it to the coast to a place called Nha Trang, bit of a tourist trap (for which jacky whinged as soon as we got of the bus) but has its good points, well actually we found a micro brewery by the sea which serviced the coldest light ales, dark ales, red ales....you get the picture. We also chartered a boat accidentally. We booked a tour for 2 people, half expecting other people to join us, but it turned out we had a boat big enough for 48 people and had several crew (nothing like feeling like a rich westerner). We [View Full Entry]

Cooking class at the Red Bridge cooking school.
We arrived at Hoi An a few days ago and are due to leave today and I have to say I will be sorry to leave. It is a fantastically chilled place with a real old feel and ambience about the place. There are around 500 tailors in this little town and you can have anything from an Armani suit to camper shoes made for you ! So far all I have bought is cake as I was trying to travel light. Although too much cake means I am definatly straying from being light !!! The food around here is amazing, [View Full Entry]

Very fine cakes !
Strange menu
Chilled out Hoi An

had an overnight stay in hue (prounounced howeee...with a smile at the end). Wandered around the citadel and have included a couple of photos from there. The photo's are actually of a citadel within a citadel....and there is actually another citadel within that, not bad for a pretty small place you can get round in an afternoon! Took an overnight train to get there and having travelled India in what they consider a same class train vietnam is luxury! Now in Hoi An and kath its as lovely as you said, will do full exploring tomorrow and update you guys soon [View Full Entry]
