End of cruise one when we arrived in Venice - can't believe the first half of the cruising is over and about to embark on the second cruise. Our trip is 2 cruises back to back cruise - but seeing some different ports on the second cruise. Some people started in Barcelona for 24 days and finished in Venice whereas we got on at Venice and will finish in Barcelona. The first cruise finished at Venice when we returned there a second time before embarking on the second cruise.... make sense? John and I went on the people mover - a bit like a mono rail, to see the San Marco Basilica - which I'm sure sister-in-law, Sue Redfern would have loved. Everything is in MOSAIC - all the ceilings and walls and paintings are done ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split October 21st 2012

We arrived at Split to not very nice weather to start off the day. As we didn't berth at the dock we were ferried to the dock by tender (life boats). The sea was a bit rough and we were thrown around a bit in the tender - I was thrown against a pole in the tender and ended up with a very black bruise but otherwise okay. Split is the largest Dalmation city, and the second largest urban centre in Croatia on the shores of the Mediterranean, more specifically on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. A very popular tourist population destination being one of the oldest cities in the area approximately 1700 years old although archaeological research establishes the city as several years older. We decided to just walk around the town and ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini October 16th 2012

The next morning we arrived at Santorini and again we went by tender to the port where we had the choice of going up to Santorini the town by donkey up a steep slope or by cable car - it was a no brainer! Four ships had come into Port at the same time so we had to line up for the cable car but as it took 36 at a time - 6 in each of the 6 cable cars the wait wasn't for long. It's been 13 years since I last went to Santorini and it was lovely to be there again and show John what it was like. Once we reached the top - you could smell the donkey's dung .... anyway we wandered around the town just a little before we came ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Kusadasi October 16th 2012

We were on an organised tour for this day - Kusadasi is in Turkey. One of the main attractions there is the huge number of Greek and Roman ruins found there at Ephesus which is a gloriously reconstructed city. Lots of rubble I say.... sorry but am not a lot into the history or seeing so much of rocks etc... but do appreciate that others do. There was also remains of the municipal baths and a brothel. One area which I found fascinating was the communal toilets where you could sit next to many people .... not my idea of privacy. From there we went to a carpet making factory where everything is made in the traditional way and quite fascinating to watch. We saw how the silk was taken from the cocoons and spun ready ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Mykonos October 16th 2012

Hello again! We arrived in Mykonos in the morning and sailed across in a tender to get to the Port of Mykonos - too many other ships around and not enough berths. After looking up some of the shops - some well known designer shops in some streets and all types of sales on.. could be dangerous so we stopped for an early lunch at a little place in town - we had a traditional Greek Yiros - oh yum...!!! and while we were sitting there another Australian couple came and sat next to us with a yiros too, they'd seen ours and decided they wanted one too. Interesting couple who had been travelling around Europe by train for the past 7 weeks - they regaled us with their stories of train travelling and places they ... read more

Middle East » Turkey October 12th 2012

Hi again, Our cruise to Istanbul went through the Dardanelles . Many of the 700 Australians/New Zealanders onboard were up very early to watch the sun rise as we went through the Dardanelles - during which time the events Manager did an impressive and much appreciated presentation on the Anzacs at Gallipoli. A photo with the sun rising over Gallipoli was taken by John. We then continued onto Istanbul where we did a tour of the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market that afternoon/evening before heading back to the ship for dinner. We tried some turkish delight - nothing like we have at home at all and were told by our Tour Guide where to buy some - well $45EU later we have a large and heavy box full of all types of turkish delight - ... read more

Hello again! What a time to land in Athens! We hit town the same day the Chancellor of Germany, Anna Merkel arrived to be confronted with a national protest in Athens. Over 7000 police and army reserves were ready and waiting for riots - streets were blocked off and plenty of police everywhere you looked. We were advised to be out of town by midday otherwise we'd be caught up in the protests and unable to get back to our ship in time. We took a bit of a gamble and did the hop on hop off bus chancing they would know where to be at the right times - this proved to be successful. We saw parts of Athens we hadn't seen before and ended up at the new Acropolis Museum where we had a ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Kotor October 8th 2012

On our last day in Venice we decided we should go and have a look at the Venice Casino - so off we went and walked until we found it and on arrival had to register and then in we went to play - well, even John decided to have a bit of a flutter on the pokies. Almost instantly he won around 53 free games and walked out with 60 Euros!! I walked out empty handed but amazed that one - John even played the pokies and secondly that he won... cheeky bugger. So what did he do - yes he went and bought those tartan pants...so look out! Our Adelaide friends & tour group arrived in Venice and we all went to the same restaurant for dinner where we went ... read more

Europe » Italy » Friuli-Venezia Giulia October 3rd 2012

We've finally arrived in Venice - Venezia, Italy. "I gaze on Venice with joy, on that great being born from the womb of the sea, like Pallas from the head of Jove." "Journey to Italy' W Goethe, Rome 11.09.1786. Our journey started at 3.30am with tea and toast at Hope Island and ended at 5.30am 2 days later (using the same clock setting) - some 50 hours later in a small trattoria with an Indian waiter who wanted to talk about his brother who lives in Prospect, SA and about the cricket at the MCG! What a small world we live in! We had stopovers in Brunei, Dubai and London and then a trip on the water public transport to pick us up to take us to the hotel. Wow what a place Venice is. Hi everyone, Honeymoon trip! We're off again leaving Australia on 29th September bright and very early in the morning for Melbourne to catch our flight to Bandar for a few hours stopover before flying onto London. We have about a 7 hour wait for our 2 hour flight to Venice... must be shops around there somewhere or a bar.... to fill in the time. We're flying Royal Brunei again - business class. More cost effective than paying Qantas economy. Yes we have to supply our own wine again so will be taking it onboard... it's a Muslim plane - they will serve your own wine to you but don't provide it. We will endeavour to keep you updated on what we're up to again, well some of it anyway! Love from John & Lyn Mitchell xxx ... read more
