South to the Straits of Magellan
a trip by Jim Coates
From: January 22nd 2018
Until: February 13th 2018
Come ride with me South along the edge of the Andes from Osorno to Punta Arenas. The road winds through the foothills in both Chile and Argentina visiting well known peaks and lakes, glaciers and parks on its way to the Straits of Magellan. Once in Punta Arenas, on the Pacific I will return my rented motorcycle and travel by bus over to Rio Gallegos in Argentina, on the Atlantic. There I hope to visit with my aunt Monica and cousin Steven Blake. My family once drove from Montevideo to Rio Gallegos in 1964 or thereabouts, but except for scenes from the Torres del Paine National Park, my memories of that trip are vague. What I know about Patagonia I have learned from the Blake family in conversation and from my uncle John Blake's story of his family's life in the Falkland Islands and Patagonia Argentina: " A Story of Patagonia" published in 2003. Yes, I have also read Bruce Chatwin. And I am forgetting a trip to Ushuaia in 2005 to go dog sledding, which should be added to the chronicle of austral visits.
