For ten years a non-profit called Backcountry Discovery Routes has been setting up motorcycle routes in different parts of the country. Destined for use by motorcyclists who prefer to travel on gravel roads and small country lanes, the Mid Atlantic route (MABDR) starts in Damascus VA and runs 1,053 miles through the forests and hills of the Allegheny Mountains to Lawrenceville PA. No interstates. No cities. No crowds. The roads wander through trees and farmland offering wonderful scenery and relative solitude, while challenging one's motorcycling skills. When I first found out about it, I was advised it was too risky for old men to try solo. So I did. Last year (2019) I rode it alone, covering almost the whole route in bits and pieces. This time it’s all the way alone again, straight up, Damascus to Lawrenceville, no time out. Mud, rocks, streams, heat, getting lost, mechanical problems and age are all working against me. Can it be done?
