I will use this blog to keep you all posted about where I am and what I am doing. I will do my best to update it frequently and post some of my best photos and entertaining stories. But I will also use it to post some quite self-centered musings about myself and the world (see below), but if that sounds OK to you, then subscribe to the blog (There is button on the right for this).

Winding down with the Weather The morning after my incredible luck at the glaciers, the weather was anything but pleasant. You will not be able to tell from the pictures I have chosen for the blogs, but I have had nasty weather on the way. But I have managed to time it, so that I have been on the road on those days and not missing out on anything really important. It is also a way of cleaning the dust of the EDS. I headed further south - into the mountains and stayed a couple of nights in Wanaka. Some of NZ's skiing territory is in this area, but the season was over weeks before I arrived and the summer activities had not really kicked off yet, so it was nice and quiet. I went tramping ... read more

Just another Island? On that Friday morning I drove down to the harbor and got myself and my new car on the ferry. Yeah, the EEL was left behind. After a few days I got fed up with it. Not the car as such. The CD player in the EEL. It could only play the first 5-6 songs on every CD and often it didn't do that very well. Apart from the odd hitchhikers and a Norwegian guy who went along for a day and a half, I had pretty much been sitting in that car alone for hours every day and then it does make a big difference if you can listen to your music of choice or the local radio from Masterton or god knows where. So the EEL was changed to the EDS ... read more

Same Shit - Different Topic I drove into Raglan, settled down at the bar at a hotel and soon after Katka and her surfer friend Noah joined me. They gave me a quick update on the town. It is about SURFING. Apparently I had stumbled into one of the premier surf spots in the world. A Swedish guy I met at the backpacker place I stayed at, told me that he had been dreaming about that place for 15 years and it seemed like he was almost offended when I told him that I don't surf. I understand him a bit. When I had just started diving on Pulau Weh a group of young Danes showed up. They had no intention (or not enough money) to dive and I couldn't help asking why the hell they ... read more

Start Again Start again. Start Again. With a calm and quiet mind. Alert and attentive mind. Balanced and equanimous mind. This is how S. N. Goenka begins the instruction sessions in the morning and afternoon during a ten-day Vipassana course and it pretty much explains why I chose to start this trip by sitting down and shutting up for ten days. But let me start by quickly explaining why I am all of a sudden out in the world again. Goodbye Mobilethink I had found a really promising job in a company that I thought was doing well and steadily expanding. I got to travel to exotic places like Iran and Papua New Guinea with another trip to Jamaica lined up. Very nice colleagues and a boss that scored 9 out of 10. So everything was ... read more

Deep underwater. Deep, deep underwater Postscript: Damn. It took a long while to find the motivation to actually wrap up this blog. Even though it was more or less written it has taken me forever to make the final editing, but here it is. All of the underwater photos were made by Kari Kulonen. Entering the "real" world again My plan after Vipassana was to either go diving or if the meditation had put me in another mood then just head home. But fortunately my appetite for adventures had not been quenched by sitting still for a while. So after the wierdly emotional goodbyes at the Dhamma Center I went straight to the airport. One final note about the friendliness of my fellow Vipassanars (a new word I think). I was along with a couple of ... read more

Anecdotes II Well, here is another round of stories and observations I have picked up along the way. I have also found some pictures that sort of matches the spirit of the stories below. The other kind of travel tips In the last installment of Anecdotes I was rambling about how useless phrasebooks are. The same goes for travel guides in general. They do try to warn you of strange customs in the country you are visiting, but there are still some akward experiences waiting for you no matter how closely you study them. So here are some very useful tips for you. Tip #1 I have already mentioned how much I am enjoying massages during my travels. It is the best possible way to relax and get those nasty hours of bus travel out of ... read more

Bhavatu Sabba Mangalam Wow. 10 Days Vipassana meditation course completed with almost flying colors, and all I have to do is describe it. Well, not so easy so I have spent a few days figuring out how to go about it. What the hell is meditation anyway? If you are anything like what I was just a couple of weeks ago, you only have a vague idea what meditation is. Something like sitting cross-legged and concentrating really hard and then you would be able to levitate within a few hours or read peoples' minds. I guess the best way to get an understanding is to simply just try it. If not the full ten days then at least 10 minutes. Even though I'm definitely not qualified to instruct anyone in Anapana or Vipassana meditation then here ... read more

Angkor and BFCE - Revealed Oomph I like songs and tunes that has an Oomph. It is when they let they let the music almost die out only to increase the intensity in one almost violent blast. Winding down and then all of a sudden give it full throttle again. That is an Oomph. Of course this is just the name it has in my head. I'm sure there is a more scientific name for it, but it will always be Oomphs to me. I'm a sucker for Oomphs. Like in "Fly" and "Gorecki" by Lamb. Or "Regrettable" by Red Snapper. Even "Fly on the Wings of Love" by the Olsen Brothers had a very nice one towards the end and I'm sure that it was because of that Oomph that they won the Eurovision Song ... read more

Crazy Cambodia When I got of the bus in Phnom Penh there was a mass of tuk-tuk drivers trying to get our attention, but there was an Australian sounding thunder of a voice that caught my attention. It was Sam, a guy my age that spoke a mysteriously perfect English and he was to be my driver for the first two days in Phnom Penh. First of all he got me to a hotel that would be the perfect level of luxury after Southern Laos and then we agreed to meet the following morning. He proved to be an excellent guide! The plan was not a pleasant one. It was in fact to spend a day trying to fathom the attrocoties that Khmer Rouge comitted in this country between 1975 and 1979. I have tried to ... read more

All is quiet in Southern Laos The last post took almost two days to make. The slow internet connections make especially the photos quite demanding, and that post became so long and had so many photos that it took forever to get it done. But I did have a chance to enjoy Luang Prabang all over again. One of the things I indulged in was massages. When you travel with men it just not the kind of thing you do together, but I have really enjoyed how my newfound status as a lonely traveler have made it possible to do exactly what I want. At least one massage a day and I am becoming quite an expert. When I got massages at CCI it was pure business. The company wanted us stay as healthy as possible ... read more
