Oh My Buddha This is going to be a very long post, but also with a lot of nice photos. I had spent a week in Singapore trying to get a visa to Myanmar. No luck. It feels strange when you just want to visit a country and your motives are being questioned because of an upcoming election, but that is what happens when you put "unemployed" as your occupation and your application is subsequently sent to Yangon for further scrutiny. I never really got an answer and I am a bit tired of visa sections in Southeast Asian embassies by now. So many wasted hours. Anyway, my backup plan had been Laos all along, so when I finally gave up, I booked tickets through Bangkok the following day. That is not the cheapest way of ... read more

Anecdotes I

Anecdotes I I have tried to collect a few stories and observations along my way that may be a little funnier than my normal posts on this blog. There are many more than the ones below, but I will publish them as I find time. Since these are just stories there will not be photos this time. Gordon the Gecko Some of my best friends in Southeast Asia are the geckos. These small lizard-like creatures work tirelessly through the nights eating mostly moths but also flies and mosquitoes. They are in other words extremely helpful and I have become quite fascinated with them. It has in fact turned into a kind of science project for me. I will find myself in bed trying to read but in stead studying the geckos running around on the ceiling ... read more

Project Sperm

Project Sperm Eric and I went down to the harbor in Larantuka for the 8 o'clock ferry to embark on what in my head had been called "Project Sperm" for quite a while. I think it was in Yogyakarta that one of us had been leafing through Lonely Planet and had stumbled on our destination and said "We have to go there". That we were now finally on our way there felt absolutely fantastic. The ferry was of the kind you picture yourself when you from time to time hear about an Indonesian ferry sinking. Wooden, old and poorly maintained and people everywhere. As we sat down (yup, we actually found some available seats) I started to realize how far away from home we were. No other whities around. No-one spoke more than a few words ... read more

Trans Flores

Trans Flores We stayed in Lubuan Bajo for a few days after the cruise. I am not really sure why. Eric began to hate the place. I didn't understand why. It is a small port town and that means that it must be a little gritty, dirty and smelly but I enjoyed it there. Our last night was a saturday and that means live music at the Paradise Bar, the only place in town that is open late at night. It is a bit outside of town up on a ridge overlooking the ocean and when walking there you do start wondering if the road leads anywhere until you hear the music. We went there on foot the night before the cruise but this night we sat on the back of a couple of guys motorcycles. ... read more

This is it Heading west from Labuan Bajo, Flores September 12th This morning Eric and I woke up with a bit of a hangover and sort of stumbled down to the dock in Labuan Bajo on Flores. Our six day liveaboard cruise around Komodo has been planned for a while and it is hopefully going to be the most expensive thing I will do on this trip. It is possible to do day-trips from Labuan Bajo to the various dive spots around Komodo and that is the cheaper option but since Eric and I have been aiming at this ever since we left Sumatra we wanted it to be perfect. As Eric said a second ago: "This is definetely the right decision. Pretty hard to have any regrets". It is futile to fully describe the setting ... read more

A small cup of Java I spent a few days in KL in a futile attempt to get a proper 60 day visa to Indonesia. August 31st was however the Malaysian independence day so the embassy closed and apparently didn't accept new visa applications the day before. The day after they threw so much red tape after me that I gave up and flew to Jakarta and got another visa on arrival in a matter of minutes. I had a day in Jakarta before Eric would join me again after his short trip to Vietnam and I tried to get some practical stuff sorted out and get a quick impression of this weird city. When travelling in Indonesia you hear a lot about how awful the bigger cities like Medan, Surabaya and Jakarta are so I ... read more

Hi Everyone This actually should have been a very short update with an emphasis on photos, but let's get the "drama" out of the way first. On Friday 27th Eric and I went to climb the Sinabung volcano some 27 km. from Beristagi south of Medan. It was a great but for me somewhat distressing climb since it became painfully obvious that I am no longer the fastest one on any mountain. I realized along the way that a very substantial part of my enjoyment from climbing mountains in the past has come from being faster that everybody else. On that glorious morning in 1996 when I was the first of several hundred climbers on the peak of Gran Paradiso I won some weird competition taking place inside my head. When I have run past particularly ... read more

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference From "The road not taken" by Robert Frost" In better Indonesian hotels you can find decent beds, but the protective plastic on the cushioned headboards is never removed which of course will keep them protected forever but they are nasty to touch and their colors will always remain dimmed. Well, this entry is all about peeling off the plastic and getting a few scratches along the way. It is going to be a very long post though, so be warned. Into the Gayo Highlands Sylvia, Eric and I left Pulau Weh with some overly ambitious plans of either buying a minibus or renting one with a driver, but Banda Aceh proved quite confusing with ... read more

Ramadan, Tsunami and going up Hi again. In a little while I will be heading out on a night dive which is also going to be the last dive here on Pulau Weh for now. Tomorrow I will be going back to Sumatra and heading up into the mountains to go trekking in the jungle. When I laid out my plan in the dive shop Eric, an American from Connecticut and Sylvia, a Canadian from Victoria, BC became very interested so the three of us travel together. Excellent, since they are both funny and clever and I'm sure that we will have a great time together. Everything is a bit complicated though. Ramadan also starts tomorrow and that makes everything quite a bit more challenging. It basically means that it will become tricky to get anything ... read more

Finally here Hi. It has taken a bit longer to find time to post than I had thought. The life of a student diver is actually quite busy. A couple of dives a day and then study, study, study the rest of the time. But I'm not complaining as you will see. Getting here The trip down here was uneventful apart from massive delays on the flights. In Amsterdam they found a problem in one of the engines and we sat in the plane and waited for more than four hours. All in all I sat in that bloody seat for more than almost 18 hours. New record. I had a full day in Kuala Lumpur and tried to get a visa, but Indonesian bureaucracy is annoyingly inconsistent and everything I had read beforehand proved not ... read more
