We left Hawick and hit the road for the shortish drive over to Jedburgh. Another stop , another possible overnight car park and what would turn out to be an amazing abbey . The only downside of travelling this time of the year was the high level maintenance that was going on in all the Historic Scotland properties . Another free one for us as members of Cadw . The ticket had paid for itself many times over this year . The roads were good and we were impressed . Money was being spent on this part of the United Kingdom and it showed . The Barnet formula certainly favours Scotland in comparison to Wales. No potholes , clear signage of anything worth seeing . We wondered what would happen if Scotland got their independence . ... read more

Up with the lark we left our little parking spot beneath the roman fort and headed back on ourselves towards Carlisle . We had not realised just how far back we had travelled yesterday . So glad we were to find a night parking spot we hadn't given a thought to the fact that we had a 45 minute ride just to get back to Carlisle where we left yesterday . Our plan today was to drive over the border into Scotland . "When was the last time you were in Scotland ?" I asked the driver who was concentrating on the road and the many speed cameras we kept passing . " 50 years ago - perhaps " he replied .In between watching for cameras and driving at 20mph in the villages we discussed what ... read more

1121 miles the signpost said it was to Rome . Reivers to the right of us and Romans to the left of us ..............stuck in the middle with you.................... , me , Sion and our Girl Gabby. How did we come to be in such an odd place . We had left Carlisle and had a night stop in mind . In the middle of nowhere . Well it was in the middle of fields , hills and in the hamlet of Alston . In a field , in a car park next to the Nook Farm Cafe and Shop. Beneath the ancient form of Epiacum , Never heard of Epiacum . Me neither until today . We were on an overnight stop for motorhomers recommended by CampRA, CampRA was something new .It did not exist ... read more

Well it might begin with a C but Calais it aint . It will have to do though. A chance to scratch the itch of wanting to travel . Something that seemed unlikely a few weeks ago. So what did I think of Carlisle ? It seemed a mix of independent shops, many empty ones and a few beggars on the street . Masked shoppers and unmasked . Victorian splenour next to charity shops and a massive square filled with shoppers and a singer belting out Christian hymns . A medieval building or two, bench seating and alleys , jitties and gennels galore . Leading from one street to another . Scotland Street . Lowther Street , cafes , restaurants and pubs . I even found the Jobcentre . That is something I always find myself ... read more

Google the Giraffe . That is what the sign said . The instruction was writ large beneath a metal sculpture of a giraffe alongside the M6. What was that all about? You could hardly drive past without googling the Giraffe . It was a clever piece of marketing . We expected something like the Angel of the North . What did we get - a advertisement for a local company.. So why are we driving up the M6? Gabby the motorhome had arrived home a few weeks ago and we had spent the last few weeks emptying her out and refilling her with essentials for our first trip out of 2021. She had been nothing more than a wardrobe and storage cupboard for the last six months . This was our first opportunity to get her ... read more

As I walk this morning I hear the sounds of the countryside . The constant hum of the bees as they flit from Comfrey plant to Comfrey plant . The river bank is clothed with the light lilac Comfrey plants . The blue Demoiselle mayflies are themselves flitting from nettle to nettle , Over the last few weeks the nettles have grown . The river which glides effortlessly today looks different to a few weeks ago . Yellow Iris grow here and there . A hint of yellow amongst the lilac of that Comfrey. As I walk I take it all in . I stop to talk to a friend . One I used to work with many years ago . We share a few memories and he looks out for the Kingfishers . A Heron ... read more

So what brought us to Chirk Marina? A shortage of paint that is what brought us to the marina. You cannot buy some colours of paint for love nor money. Ducksback paint for fences - any colour apart from grey . What did we want grey of course . Is it right to blame Covid? I guess we will never know . Are the factories producing paint short of workers due to Covid? Are materials hard to source? Is it because everyone is into Do It Yourself . No holidays , no work so are folks painting every room , every fence and spending money on their homes ? It is impossible to second guess the reasons . WE can guess but probably will not come anywhere close to working out why things are hard to ... read more

Days 430 to 434. Week 20 the year . A whole shedload of days disappeared and no sign of life on the horizon as things change day on day. The weather has been awful . Rain . Heavy most of the time swelling the river Dee up by over a metre. The river looks lovely when it is fast flowing but nature is cruel . The Sandpipers chicks have been washed away by the sheer force of the water. The Kingfishers late to arrive had built their nest into the river bank as normal . The water last week was a foot below them and dropping . The incessant rain has caused a rise of such proportions that whilst not flooding the village it has washed away the Kingfisher eggs . It has thundered and we ... read more

May is drifting on as each month drifts along. Boris has opened up our country and life is for the time being feeling a little more like normal . We now can eat inside . We can have more guests at weddings. No limits on the numbers at wakes . Swimming and the gyms have all re-opened but for how long ? Boris has announced that he intends to follow his road map and open up the country properly by the 21st June . Portugal gave the green light to travellers who flooded at the first opportunity the airports and the planes. The chance of a holiday was too great to overlook . Spain and France are still locked down countries and for the first time in many years it seems the ferry companies might open ... read more

Day 418 of lockdown . It is Super Thursday today. So called because it is the day when elections happen. Last year everything was on hold due to Covid. The councillors lived to fight another year before we had chance to have our say about their actions. This year we were voting members to the welsh Senedd, the Scots were voting for their parliament members, there was a by election in Hartlepool and we voted for our chosen mayors in and police commissioners. So it was going to be a busy day before my walk and my work . We walked slowly to the village hall where the elections were taking place. In front of us we could see one lady heading in the same direction . Standing outside the hall waiting to go in brought ... read more
