Part 4 - We had done virtually everything apart from one last part of the museum/castle complex. This was the odd sounding Aero park/motorcycles museum and the Depository . I guess with an aeropark you know what you are getting . Loads of old airplanes . However all we found was one old Danish Airforce MIG fighter plane parked up outside the buildings. We never did find another airplane despite trying. Inside was quite literally a time capsule of vehicles . The lower floor was given over to motorbikes . Unlike in our country where the vehicles are displayed in date order starting from the earliest before moving up to date here there seemed to be very little order . The bikes were suspended from the ceiling and were at eye level so it was easy ... read more

We had done with the display of fashion and it was time now to move on to the fairy tale castle that was Egeskov Slot. Picture the scene if you will . A moat with a beautifully manicured lawn running down to it . Waterlilies growing in the water . A gatehouse . Mellow red brick. Pointed arched windows . Somewhere where the young medieval lady would stand. Her hair flowing down . She would be waiting to be rescued by knight in shining armour . A copper witches hat roof turned green with age . And there you have it in a nutshell . The perfect medieval castle . Only it was not medieval at all . It looked medieval . But the wrought iron gate hid the clue . 1850 - so this was ... read more

Part 2 - the spiral staircase up to the fashion museum It is not often you find somewhere that has something for everyone . The garden lovers amongst us could wander through the stunning rooms of the castle gardens . After the sensual pleasure of a garden it was possible to walk over the moat into the gatehouse which housed a surprise . We climbed the black spiral staircase to the first floor where we found case after case of clothing reflecting the fashions of the well to do owners of Egeskov Slot . Most dressers were of what we would call the Victorian period . Comginations of earlier prettier clothing particularly colourful and later more restrained black outfits . The dresses were displayed in glass cabinets and we had the floor all to ourselves which ... read more

How many places can you go to that offers so much ?. Egeskov Slot offered us plenty of parking and even an overnight spot if we wanted it . A museum of man and mechanics , classic cars, motorbikes and aeroplanes and a grocers museum . Although we never found the grocers museum . It also offered a Rescue museum and an outdoor camping exhibition . And if that was not enough an old smithy , playgrounds for the kids, a maze , Titanias Palace , coffee to go , a dahlia garden a water garden and the list just went on and on. Part 1 The gardens The gardens of the castle were all just like small rooms that led one to the next one . They were formal to a certain extent but overall ... read more

Gabby the motorhome was still parked up on the grass outside this lovely castle /manor house. We had been over to the green museum and the garden and now it was time to see what was going on upstairs . The house as we looked at it was a red brick Renaissance manor house and an attractive one at that . Built in 1490 although excavations have revealed evidence of earlier constructions going back to 1340. We crossed the moat and entered the "front door ". The nobleman Lave Eskesen Brock who died in 1503 built the first moated fortress on the site . It was his grandson Eske Brock who rebuilt and modernised the manor . And what a good job he did of that . Our first stop was the chapel which looked as ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is parked up on the green grass in front of the castle we are visiting today . Gammel Estrup in Mid Jutland. The car park is packed and it seems as if everyone is taking advantage of the sunny weather and visiting this lovely castle . A castle with a museum so two for the price of one . Or rather two attractions and two prices . The name Det Gronne Museum was a bit of a misnomer. It was not green in any way shape or form . I expected something to do with ecology but once inside we found something rather different . We paid our entrance fee which was double the normal 80krone and were told that we should perhaps visit the gardens first as rain was expected . There ... read more

A church, a pretty churchyard, two burial mounds and two Runic stones . That pretty much sums up Jelling. Gabby the motorhome was parked up between two massive burial mounds . Impressive they were too. Said to be the resting place of King Gorm of Denmark and his wife Thyra. They were the parents of King Harald of Denmark . The mounds were created as royal monuments in the 10th century . Once they may have held the bones of King Gorm in a deep underground chamber but nothing was found during earlier excavations . Bones were found somewhere else and reinterred in the small white church at Jelling. We climbed one of the mounds for a better view of the area. Thankfully steps had been placed there for ease of climbing and to prevent idiots ... read more

A chinese proverb says "The palest ink is better than the best memory " Gabby the motorhome is parked in yet another cold and windy car park and is being slowly covered with a thin layer of sand . Silly Sat Nag couldnt find where we were looking for which was a surprise as we were looking for one of the largest sand dune in Europe. It was similar to the Pyla Dune in France . A dune that grows year on year . And big enough to be seen for miles . There was plenty of parking and the site looked particularly popular even at this time of year . A few cars and a number of motorhomes and us. We had to walk today and that walk would be over soft sand which would ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is parked up on Plot 26 on a camping site called Tranum Klit . It is an ACSI site in the middle of the forest near to the Sandmosevej in the village of Brovst. The cost per night is 22 euros. I am trying to pick up Danish words and vej is a road . There are motorwayvej - motorways and just plain old vej at the end of every street name . I paid for our nights stop and ordered bread for the morning from the small but well equiped shop. The site is massive and I managed to get lost going out to fill the water bottles for the day. 215 plots spread on roads with names like Lidergarden , Brokkensvej and Favestien . There is even a naturist area although ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is parked up in an area described as Denmarks largest body of inland water . Something I can testify to as there is a lot of water about and it takes a long time to get from A to B. The waterways link the Kattegat and the North Sea. And boy is it windy here . The wind never seems to drop. It is also an area of many castles . Our book tells us that you could visit each one but it take you forever . To be choosy and pick one or two rather than go for the lot of them . We picked Spottrup Borg because it was brick built, looked interesting and was surrounded by ramparts and a moat . Very different to what we might see back home. ... read more
