Our last day - home tomorrow - train booked for 9.50 French time. Not something to look forward to. Our last night was planned to be spent in Guines which is near enough to Calais to leave us with a short drive to the tunne of about 20 minutesl. Our drive to Guines from our overnight stop at Troyes was fairly unintresting. But then I guess going home is always a pain. When you are on holiday there are some things you miss - a bath will be welcome and our usual bed. But somehow at this point we would both be happy to turn around and for the the holiday to go on forever. It is always sad to leave French soil and head home knowing that we wont be going away again for at ... read more

We are now heading home. Always a sad time. We have enjoyed our three weeks holiday and time has flown. Life in the motorhome has taken off differently. We wake later, eat breakfast at leisure and have got used to the slower pace of life. Driving between places takes longer than in a car and you get to see more of the countryside. Calais is three days away and we have divided our last few days into 6 hour daily drives. Our drive starts just after breakfast. After two hours or so we stop at one of the excellent aires, put the kettle on and enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits or cake before moving on again. After a further two hours we stop for lunch again in one of the aires. If you have never used ... read more

We woke early to a dewy colder morning and ate breakfast. The mountains certainly made the mornings colder and it took longer in the day to warm up. We set off for the small town centre of Challes les Eaux where we planned to catch the bus into Chambery. We are getting used to using public transport now and find it quite useful to get from A to B. The bus arrived and we were very lucky as we only had to pay 1 euro each to travel on the bus. Apparently it was mobility week and the public transport company of Chambery wanted to take motorcars off the road and were encouraging residents to pay 1 euro for a weekly ticket to use the buses. This must have been the best value for bus travel ... read more

Although yesterday we had little idea where to go but then we had a breakthrough thought. The short drive to Sisteron had always been an option after speaking to the young couple from Chichester. So it was to be Sisteron. Neither of us have been before so it was to be a first for us. It sounded a lovely place and worth a detour on our way home. Our journey followed the River Durance which ran just alongside the main road. The town itself is situated on the banks of the river and the town is sometimes called the Gateway to Provence. There is an excellent small aire in the lower town with parking for cars and around 10 or 12 motorhomes. Motorhome parking is free and there is a water borne on site. I imagine ... read more

Our first job of the day was to pay up before moving on. The office should have been open at 8 but it appeared the receptionists had arrived on time but decided to do something else and disappeared until 8.30. Whilst waiting I picked up todays bread and tomorrows croissants from the small shop on site. We had decided to move on early and head for Camping St Victoire near to Aix en Provence. The journey was pleasant and Mount Victoire a limestone ridge which extends 18 kilometers between the Bouche du Rhone and the Var departments and dominates the landscape at 3317 feet . It was much painted by Cezanne who lived locally at Aix. The campsite was small and tidy with excellent reception. We were charged 14 euros per night but with a surcharge ... read more

Marseilles day. A big city with a population of about a million. Glenn had been many years ago but did not feel it was safe to leave his car at the time. We hoped that things would have improved over the intervening years. Surely things would be different. You always have a certain worry about going into a big city, hanging on to your handbag or purse and hoping you will not get robbed. It is the same if its Paris, Rome , Manchester or London. A lot of people and the worry that something might go wrong. But then you have to grit your teeth and take the opportunity to go and see what comes of the day. If you worried about things like this too much you wouldn’t go anywhere. We walked to the ... read more

I always love Fridays. It’s the last day of the week normally at work and I have the weekends to look forward to. And a long weekend every week at that. Today started with a Labrador dog sniffing round our plot and thinking of depositing a present along the way. He wouldn’t move and kept sniffing round our electric hook up cables. In the end we accidently moved the cables and they hit him where it hurt and he took off without leaving us something to remove. We had moved to Cassis a little further along the coast. The plot was a reasonable 80 square metres and the sun was shining. Our plot was half in the sun and half in the shade which is quite a good arrangement. If it gets too hot at least ... read more

After our events in Cagnes we headed a little way along the Cote D’Azur with the intention of spending a few days at Port Grimaud. We had found a possible campsite Prairies de la Mer which was ACSI. When we arrived we were ushered into a holding area and told to go to reception. Reception advised us to go and find a plot and come back with the number. The site itself was huge and easy to get lost around. Vans were packed in to every possible space and even the plot we found was hemmed in to the front, back and both sides. Not really the type of site we liked. Far too busy and rather noisy. Our plot was number 3275 which tells you a little about the site size. The plots were quite ... read more

Getting used to getting up early. With the hour difference between here and home we find ourselves waking early, eating breakfast early and moving on early in the day. We had been reading a lot about over wintering in Spain or Portugal but with working that isn’t a possibility at the moment. Perhaps in 2014 when I get my state pension. We wonder what it would be like staying in the same place. After few days we get wanderlust and want to move on and see pastures new. Would you get fed up of the same sites, the same people, the same scenery or would it be a blessing to be in one place, pitch up and stay? I guess it would be nice for a while to get to know people and make friends something ... read more

Another very hot and stuffy night. We woke early having bought our bus tickets to Siena for the princely sum of 2 euros 40 return. We were advised that the bus stop was just outside the camp shop and that the bus would come into the campsite at 8.47 and pick up passengers. Being used to buses at home we did not expect the bus to come at that time however to our surprise at exactly 8.47 , not a minute sooner nor a minute later the bus turned up. It was full and we had to stand throughout the 30 minute journey into Siena. After much careering round corners we arrived at Siena bus station and what excellent value the bus fare turned out to be. Siena never fails to impress. We have both been ... read more
