Day 3 and we are near to Bremen . We have never been this far north before . The weather is unexpectedly warm . 29 degrees during the day and I wonder if I have brought the wrong clothes with me . The Maxxair does not seem to do what it says on the tin. It does blow in a bit of cold air but that is the fan working rather than it pulling out the hot air and replacing it with fresher stuff from outside . My theory is it will never work . And the sad thing is perhaps it will never get a fair try . The drive was along the motorways was as always a combination of excellent and fraught . Where the road was clear the German drivers drove past us ... read more

"Life is a pilgrimage. The wise man marches on " Swami Sivananda. I am standing in front of a locked gate outside the marina at Gertreidenberg in the Netherlands. I can see motorhomes inside but there is no sign of life. No-one about to ask how to get inside .I look at the gate and the numbers on it , two keypads , one to open the big gate and the other the pedestrian gate but no clue how to get in. A lady appears . "Hello " she shouts . "Are you wanting to park up ? " " You need to ring the number on the gate " But then she opened the gate and let us in. "Go over to see the harbourmaster " " Down the steps, pay him for one nights ... read more

Thursday - another one of those days which found me wondering how I managed to work and get ready to go on holiday. Over two years ago I would have found myself sitting at work with my mind divided between work and thinking what had I got to do to get away for my holiday . Life had changed . A blood test result sought out . A mixed message from the receptionist . What was wrong with saying one result had not come back . Instead she led us to believe all had come back and one required the GP's attention . Ring back tomorrow . Last minute shopping and buying just enough to tide us over for a few days . Plans made of where to hide said contraband from the authorities who were ... read more

Monday - Bank Holiday and everywhere closed down for the day apart from the odd supermarket . Shopping done early this week as I don't want the fridge and freezer full of food which will /might go to waste. No swimming today and the football moved from Bank Holiday afternoon which is the usual day for a match to tomorrow Tuesday night . It is a funny old time . That bit where I would have been working and trying to sort out the van in between that work . Now with no work we have more time but that gives the butterflies more time to start fluttering round . The fact that the trip has changed times many has caused some issues . Maps of Turkey and Greece printed out and a route planned . ... read more

Every day we wake and add to our knowledge and our interests .How true is that sentiment ? We wake each day to a blank page . We can fill it with something useful or equally fill it with nothing . That is up to us . The day can go either way. The weather was changeable and the mornings have become rather chilly. There are so many signs of Autumn . The leaves are slowly turning brown and crisp. The flowers have gone over . The blackberries are ready for picking and the birds are starting to clear the berries on the trees. The bells are still not hung in the church . The return has fallen a week behind schedule . At a cost of 38K to refurbish them a whole raft of fundraising ... read more

Ziggy found herself being driven out of Wrexham County Borough to the nearby county of Denbighshire . So what were we doing going out to Ruthin a town we lived in for 7 years ? We were picking up a CARN card which would allow us access to all the records offices that were part of this Archive scheme . We had once had CARN cards . The old blue and white paper copies with our address on the back and signature and with a photo stuck on the front . Gone were those days . Now an application had to be made on line , a photograph uploaded and an appointment made at a records office to pick up the card once identities had been checked . We only had a choice of two days ... read more

The heat is on, on the street , inside your head on every beat. The songs words seem to be going round and round my head . The song that came from Beverley Hills Kop seems to echo to the sights, sounds and heat of an exceptionally hot summer . My head was full of Eddie Murphy and the weather that was steaming and the humidity high. The mercury has reached the heady unheard of heights of 35 degrees . The grass is parched . The flowers are dying . The water in lakes and rivers are at their lowest and old buildings are appearing in the dry reservoirs . There is a hosepipe ban in some areas . It is too hot to walk in the day . That has to be done early . ... read more

The days are getting shorter as they do when we move through August . The weather though is still hot and muggy. Wildfires are breaking out here and there . Hosepipe bans are being introduced in some counties and the reservoirs are starting to look dry . It feels best to do things early in the morning . Walks feel better in the cooler morning air . Swimming is pleasant before the summer heat kicks in . The fridge is working overtime to keep cool . As we are struggling too . The fields are yellow or turning brown . The Rowan and Hawthorn berries are beginning to turn bright red . Autumn is only just around the corner . Before long we will moan about the rain , the lack of sunshine and the thought ... read more

How quickly things can change ? How often does it happen that you have a plan and something happens that changes everything ? It must have happened to us times many over the years . Coming home from Venice - the volcano in Iceland erupts and an easy couple of hours flight home turns into an epic train, car and ferry journey home . The Greek sailors striking meaning no way out of Greece and the wait until the strike was over . A gite holiday planned with a flight into Bergamo . Cancelled due to the seat problems on the airplane . Covid getting in the way of Scandanavia . So many plans . So many times we have come up against the immovable object . Sometimes we have found ways round it but sometimes ... read more

It has been a short break this year between the end of the football season and the start of the new one . Scotland start early due to their bad winters . Because of the World Cup our season is starting a month earlier than normal . The Charity Shield as I will forever know it was held at the King Power Stadium in Leicester . Liverpool hammered Manchester City . It has been a season of summer sport from Wimbledon to the 20/20 Cricket , from the Womens Euros to the Commonwealth Games . If you are into your sport then the summer of 2022 has been a good one with something for everyone . As we drove into town clutching our tickets for the last pre-season friendly we found ourselves chatting about the match ... read more
