The Delaware River itself isn't terrebly impressive, just a big, flat river, but there are a bunch of great waterfalls on the Pennsylvania side. I started out trying to go the the Kittatinny Visitors Center, but it was closed due to budget cuts. Instead, I drove up the road through the rec area on the Pennsylvania side of the river, stopped off at the headquarters to get an idea what to see, then headed up towards Dingmans Falls. I actually saw two falls in that area (three if you ... read more

Today I did half the Hickory Creek trail today, twice. Hickory Creek trail is a 12 mile loop through the Hickory Creek Wilderness. It was an enjoyable hike with nice, but not especially photogenic, scenery. Right around what I estimated to be the midpoint of the trail there was a seeming fork in the trail, where no fork was supposed to be, but both forks melted away not long after. I spent a little while searching around where I thought the trail should be, but wasn't able to find a clear trail or any blazes marking the trail. Instead I hiked back out the way I had come in.... read more

After talking to the ranger about which trails were good day hikes, I headed to the Beaver Meadows trails for a quick 3.5 mile hike around Beaver Meadows Lake. It was a nice place to hike, though I only took a few pictures. Sadly, I didn't think to take a picture of the armpit high sea of ferns I had to wade through at one point along the trail. I didn't see many hikers on this trail, bu... read more

I left work early to get extra driving done before stopping for the night. Unfortunately, my timing was off and I hit Chicago at rush hour, although it didn't slow me down too badly. I was able to get as far as Toledo, OH before stopping.... read more

Nothing but travel. As I crossed Minnesota I continued seeing rest areas blocked off by construction barrels, but no apparent construction. As I was listening to NPR (being in Minnesota, it was being produced by Minnesota Public Radio) (I spent much of my travel days listening to NPR), they mentioned that Minnesota had not passed a budget, and apparently bathrooms were not deemed a critical service. I made my way across the Twin Cities and down through Wisconsin, getting home in the late afternoon.... read more

While I've driven past Theodore Roosevelt National Park several times, this is the first time I've gone in. Theodore Roosevelt NP, besides preserving some spectacular landscapes, is sighted near where Teddy Roosevelt owned a ranch in the late 19th century, a period credited with developing his conservation mindedness. The ranch site itself is well off the beaten path and not developed. After driving the loop in the park's southern unit, I continued east. As I said before, they were having some severe problems ... read more

The refuge is the winter range for elk living in the surrounding national parks and forests, but being nearly July the elk weren't there. From there I continued north through Grand Teton National Park. I took a lot of pictures of the mountains, but I couldn't tell you which ones were which. As I drove along, I was surprised to come across a very nice log church in the middle of the park. Also along the way was Jackson dam. Jackson Lake is a natural lake, but the dam raises it's leve... read more

More driving, most of it spent on the Snake River plain in southern Idaho. I stopped at a sparsely treed NF campground in a narrow valley just south of Grand Teton that night. The lack of trees proved problematic while I was setting up my tent when the strong winds blowing through the valley damaged and nearly blew down my tent.... read more

I took a more southerly path back through Washington, passing between Mount Rainier National Park and Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. I didn't want to stop, so I bypassed both. I did make a quick stop a little to the southeast of Mt. Rainier NP to take a picture of Tieton dam. Other than that, I just drove, stopping in eastern Oregon for the night.... read more

On Monday Shauna and I rented sea kayaks and paddled on the strait between two county parks just west of Port Angeles, Freshwater Bay and Salt Creek. It was about 4.5 miles between them, making a 9 mile round trip. Sadly, I didn't take any pictures this day since my camera isn't waterproof. There were plenty of things worthy of pictures though, it is an extremely nice area. The area we paddled was mostly tree topped cliffs with few landing places available. We started out taking it easy, checking out the bays and watching the raccoons climb on the cliffs. As we made our way along, we heard several thunder booms (but thankfully never saw lightning) so we covered the latter parts of the route quickly. Even though the tide was coming in, we still had ... read more
