My favorite way to vacation is by taking road trips. Here you can hear about where I've been and what I've done.

Travel day to home. My timing did not improve over the course of the trip, and once again I found myself in Chicago during rush hour.... read more

Boldt Castle was built by George Boldt between 1900 and 1904 on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. When his wife died unexpectedly in 1904, work was stopped and never completed. Unlike the tours I took in Newport, RI, Boldt Castle was unguided and even allowed access to the unfinished areas. Also unlike the Newport tours, pictures were allowed. In addition to the main house I also toured ... read more

North America » United States » New York » Lake Placid August 13th 2013

More rain, this time in Lake Placid, NY. I went to the Olympic Museum and also walked around the Olympic Center. I saw a group practicing Synchronized Skating (like Synchronized Swimming, but with frozen water rather than liquid) in the arena, and a group practicing figure skating in another rink. After that I went to the library to sit down and do some planning for which hikes to do in the Adirondacks. The library is in a small building in the middle of the very busy Main St, so I was worried I would be able to find a quiet corner, but it turned out to be bigger on the inside than on the outside. I was able to find a nice quiet spot with a view of Mirror Lake where I could watch it rain. ... read more

My string of bad luck finding the trail continued, with a twist. This time I couldn't (and never did) find the trailhead, but I was able to use a different nearby trailhead to get where I wanted to go. My first hike was to Rattlesnake Cliff. Rather than looking into the mountains, this vista actually looks west over a lake and the flat land beyond (and, eventually, the Adirondacks). Apparently there is also a larger south facing cliff, but I never saw the trail fork to reach it. On the way down I also took a bunch of pi... read more

Today it was Arethusa Falls, the tallest falls in New Hampshire at over 200 feet. By the numbers, this on is as steep as some of the steeper hikes I've done this past week, but it didn't feel as steep. On my way up I took the Bemis Brook trail, which allowed me to get pictures of a couple other nice falls. Arethusa Falls itself is a wide sheet falling down a not quite vertical rock face. Heading west from there, I decided to track down and check out Circus Smirkus. Circus Smirkus is a youth summer camp for kids who want to do circu... read more

I started out first thing going to the Mt. Washington auto road, but they turned me away because the winds at the top were 93 mph. Instead, I headed to Wildcat Mountain ski area, not to go skiing but because the hike to Thompson Falls starts there. It is not a very long hike to the falls, and I was able to get good pictures of the first two cascades. Both the guidebook (Thanks Kris!) and the sheet I got from the ranger's station suggest that I should have been able to follow the trail higher, but I never foun... read more

Singing of "Rain Rain Go Away" failed to have the desired effect, so my first day in the White Mountains was rained out. I did a little bit of planning for the rest of my time in the White Mountains, a little bit of just driving around the forest, and a lot of sitting in traffic where there were huge backups going through the nearby small towns.... read more

This made my visit to Acadia National Park somewhat shorter and wetter than originally planned. I drove the loop road and took some pictures when visibility allowed, but I didn't do any hiking.... read more

I first went to the Breakers. It's pretty much exactly what you would expect from a Gilded Age mansion, with Italian marble and gold leaf everywhere. (You'll have to take my word for it, they don't allow photography inside the mansion) Somewhat surprisingly the bedrooms are much more subdued than the public areas, although still richly finished including hot and cold running salt water (in addition to fresh). I also toured Rosecliff, which while not quite as over ... read more

The first was up to an rocky overlook called Giant Ledge. It was very short and steep hike, ascending 1000 feet in less than 1.5 miles (one way). The trail was also very rocky, with rocks averageing a foot in diameter as the trail bed, due to the trail having been built without erosion control. Once I reached the top though, I got to see a great view of the surrounding mountains and the forest below. The second hike was a much gentler mile each direction along an old road bed to Diamond Notch Falls. Diamond Notch Falls is... read more
