We rode our bikes to town today to the weekly oudoor market. You could buy almost anything you need there. I bought a new dress and we found lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and some great roasted chicken and sausages. Then the next stop was up the hill to check out the castle. You cannot go inside the castle because someone lives there. But you can walk around the streets of the ancient town which are enclosed by the city walls. People live in the buildings within the walls. As we wandered around the narrow streets it is fun to imagine what it would be like to live there. After trying out one of the local treats, gelatto (Italian ice cream) it was time to go home and enjoy all the great stuff we bought ... read more

Okay, okay. I can just hear some of you saying "you went all the way to Italy and you are just going to sit around on the beach the entire time? You guys are crazy!" We know which ones of you that are saying that so today we decided to make you happy! Actually we woke up to rain so we decided it was a good day to take a day trip to the ancient city of Siena. Siena, a fascinating city. This was a city we absolutely had to visit because our granddaughter, Elizabeth, has a friend who was named for this city. And we are so glad we did. Siena was a major banking and trade center around 1260-1350. Then the bubonic plague swept through the city and cut the population by more than ... read more

We have arrived at Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy- It is a small beach community on the Mediterranean Sea in the region of Tuscany. This is our first home exchange on the trip. Wow! what a place. We may just stay here for the whole two weeks and forget doing any sight seeing. This place is amazing. It is a beachfront community in the countryside with pine trees galore. Each property owner also has their own space on the beach. Most of the spaces are covered cabanas. And there are very few people around. It is our idea of paradise! The town of Castiglione della Pescaia is a small fishing village with a long wide beach promenade. There are pizza restaurants everywhere you look! The marina looks interesting and there is a castle on the hill overlooking ... read more

Today we said good by to Spain. There is so much more to see in the great country but it is always good to save something for the next trip. This was to be a travel day in a big way using just about every mode of transportation except boats. We were driven by car to the train station by the father of our landlady. Then we rode the fast train (approx 200 miles per hour) to Barcelona. There we rode another train to the airport. But the train did not go all the way to the airport so we had to ride a bus to the actual airport. Then the plane to Pisa, Italy. At the airport we rented a car. And now the story gets more interesting. We were mentally prepared for the short ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Vinaros May 16th 2014

We arrived in the town of Vinaros by train. Jerry's first train ride. Trains in Europe are fast, efficient, and a great way to travel. Once we got settled in our seats came the thought, "how will we know when to get off?!" After we got that figured out we relaxed and enjoyed the ride. Vinaros is a large, seaside town halfway between Valencia and Barcelona. It is primarily a fishing area and has a very nice port and marina. And the beaches here are very nice as well. We stayed for three days and enjoyed pretending we were a part of this town. We were amazed at the culture in Spain and it was quite obvious in this smaller town. In the morning the streets, markets, and plazas(of which there are lots) are full of ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia May 14th 2014

Arrived in Valencia by plane. Our host, Juanjo, was at the airport to greet us. On the way to the apartment we will be staying at, he gave us a great little tour of Valencia complete with recommended places to eat and things to do. Our apartment was a listing on Airbnb.com. This is our first accommodation from that source. It seems to be working out great. We highly recommend it for finding places to stay while traveling. You can get just a room in someone's home or rent an entire apartment, like a vacation rental. We have a problem. We can't go home--unless I can find Valencia oranges there. Jerry has been making fresh squeezed orange juice each morning for breakfast and I think I have become addicted! We had hoped to be able to ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville May 12th 2014

Our stay in Seville has come to an end. The weather has been hot -90 to 93. We understand now why they have siestas. It is just too hot in the middle of the day. Seville is a great city and we hope to come back some day. There is a sweet fragrance in the air coming from the orange trees. The narrow cobblestone streets, the ornate architecture, the cultural sights, the ringing bells every hour, the food, the people all blend together to make this city special. This is a city that has much to offer. It seems to get into your system and we hate to leave. But it is time to move on. Tomorrow --Valencia!... read more

I am still spinning from the sights we saw today. The pictures don't begin to do the cathedral justice but they give an idea. Everything is larger than humungus. The citizens set out to build the most outrageous cathedral of its time. I would have to say they were successful. Seville's Cathedral is the third largest church in Europe and the largest Gothic church in the world. In 1401 the Christians tore down a brick mosque (they left the bell tower) and began building the cathedral. It took them 120 years to build the building that is 126 meters long, 82 meters wide, and 30 meters high. Besides the enormity and lavishness of the cathedral there are all the treasures that are on display. The high altar is 65 feet tall with 44 scenes from the ... read more

Another amazing day. The first stop after arriving at our hotel in Seville was to get tickets to a bullfight. We were in luck. There was an event that night and still available tickets in the shade. So our first day in Seville was planned. Before the fights began we wondered around marveling at the sights and deciding what we wanted to see and do while in town for the next three days. Clearly not enough time in this ancient city. We are staying in the old town where the streets are incredibly narrow. There are town squares everywhere and old buildings all around. After a late lunch it was time for the bullfights. Luckily Jerry had noticed that people were dressed up so we put on our nice clothes and we were off. Nice clothes ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Albufeira May 9th 2014

The last two days in Portugal we spent enjoying the beach and the resort pool. We have seen a lot of the southern part of Portugal known as the Algarve region. We have learned the beaches are popular places for people from the U.K.to come for their holidays. They seem to love to bake in the sun and become as red as lobsters. The men like to wear tight skimpy swimsuits. It is as if they bought one suit when they were 10 years old and continue to wear the same suit at 60 no matter how much they have grown over the years. And the women seem to buy only bikinis no matter how young or old or small or large, that is if they wear a top at all! Oh, the sights we have ... read more
