Today we went off in separate directions. Jerry to visit a motorcycle shop and me to visit the Anne Frank House. It didn't turn out so good for either of us. Jerry went by public transportation. He had the route down and the bus numbers he needed. But the last connectng bus didn't arrive until 15:13 (military time is used all over Europe) it was only 11:15. He wasn't about to stand at the bus stop that long even for a motorcycle. So he returned home. My plan was to walk to the museum. I knew how to get there and I left early enough so the line would not be too long. I was walking confidently down the street as if I lived here, cautiously watching for cars, trams, buses, and bicycles. Suddenly I looked ... read more

The exploring of this intriguing city has been put on hold for a few days. I have a horrible cold. Jerry has been out looking around and I wandered around a little yesterday. We had a wonderful visit with Coby, the owner of our apartment, this morning. She is full of tips and things to see around the area. So hopefully tomorrow the exploring will begin. A note about home exchanges--they don't always happen simultaneously. Sometime next summer Coby and Tom will go to our house. When they come we will just go somewhere else, maybe upriver camping. While we are here in Amsterdam Coby is staying on their boat while Tom is visiting relatives in Sweden. So far this system is working out great. We have been in some very nice homes and meeting some ... read more

Travel day -7 1/2 hours on the train and now we are in Amsterdam. Another home exchange. The owner of the apartment met us at the train station and walked with us to "our new home". Coby is very nice and knows this city well. She plans to take us on a boat ride in a few days around the canals of Amsterdam. We will be here for two weeks. Can't wait to start exploring tomorrow. ... read more

We are obviously not big city people. If we had to live in a city both of us agree it would have been Portland, Oregon. But now that we have seen Munich, Portland has to step aside. Munich is a wonderful city. It is clean, has lots of parks, a wonderful river, lots of arts and museums, a sense of pride, great food, and of course the beer. But that is not to say there are no rules. The other day Jerry tried to order potato salad with his schnitzel. Oh no, that was not allowed, those two do not go together. Then today he thought it would be nice to mow the lawn for the owners. He got about three swipes mowed when a neighbor came over shaking her finger at him. No lawn mowing ... read more

Today is a big day in the city. It is the celebration of the birthday of Munich! Before heading to the main town square to take in the festivities we went to the Deutsches Museum. This museum is on the scale with the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. It traces the evolution of science and technology. There are three branches but after six hours we had only touched the surface of one branch. We saw engines, airplanes, rockets, electrical exhibits, nuclear exhibits, nanotechnology exhibits, marine exhibits, and a massive mining exhibit. The extent of detail that went into all that we saw is incredible. But no pictures are allowed to be placed on the internet. After viewing all the mind boggling displays and exhibits we were ready for some fun. The Munich Birthday Party was in ... read more

Jerry went off on his own little adventure this morning. He visited the BMW motorcycle showroom. They are made right here in Munich. He felt like a kid in a candy store. There were three floors of motorcycles on display. He had a great time looking them all over. I am a little surprised that he came home by way of the subway and bus. I half expected to hear him drive up with a new motorcycle. But even though he didn't buy he sure had fun window shopping. When he got home we hopped on the bicycles and headed out of town to the south of Munich. The bike paths along the river are beautiful. The river is clean and pretty and the trees along the river are beautiful. And much to our surprise there ... read more

The weather forecast was for thunderstorms (which never materialized) so we chose to use the public transportation system again today to do further exploration of the city. We feel pretty proud of ourselves for figuring out the system (more or less) in such a timely manner. Usually the last day or two in a place is when we finally get it! Our destination --Nymphenburg Palace--not the interior just the outside grounds. We certainly were not expecting what we found. The grounds are enormous--one square mile--with a bathhouse, pagoda, temple gazebo, canals, waterfalls, two lakes, swans, flower gardens, statues, and walking trails through the woods. We spent half the day here wandering around. The Palace was built in 1662 as a summer get away from Munich. The Wittelsbach family still live in one wing of the palace. ... read more

Today we explored the city by public transportation. We have passes for the whole week so we decided to see how they worked. We figured out how to get back to the train station for when we leave town, we figured out how to get to the center of town, and most importantly we figured out how to get back home. We rode the buses and the subway, the trams will have to wait for another day. The public transportation system in this city is remarakable. It covers a vast area and is quick and efficient. And we never even got lost. While in the town center we went up in the tower of The Old Town Hall. There is a law in Munich that no buildings can be built taller than the church towers. So ... read more

We explored parts of Munich by bicycle today. The owners of the house we are staying in have really nice bikes but then most of Munich own great bikes. They have wonderful bike paths and lanes all over town. But you must be careful and signal to the other riders just like when driving a car. And stay in your lane or you might have a head on collision. First stop was Marienplatz, the town square which had a crowd of people waiting for the 11:00 Glockenspiel chime. While waiting for that chime we went into St Peter's Church which is the oldest church in Munich. It was heavily damaged in the war but through a large donation from one of the beer companies in town and other private donations the church was restored . Next ... read more

We have learned a big lesson--always check to see if the travel day is a holiday. It happened to us in Ayamonte, Spain (no taxis because it was festival day); it happened to us in Venice, Italy (all the grocery stores and area restaurants were closed for a holiday); and it happened to us again today. Who knew that June 9th is a big holiday in Austria? ! Well the bus drivers knew. We hung around our apartment until it was time to catch the 8:30 a.m bus. We had been ready for over an hour. But the 8:30 bus did not come. Hmmmm. We checked the schedule and realized our mistake--on holidays the 7:30 bus, which we could have caught, and the 9:30 bus run but NOT the 8:30 bus. So we spent our last ... read more
