October 23rd 2008

Today was a quiet day, relatively speaking but a lot happened. First thing in the morning we went up to the Home to finish making decorations for the classroom. I had in mind to make some origami fish with the kids to go with the lanterns we had made earlier in the week. While I was doing that Jan was finishing off the small jobs with the electrical work in the classroom and around the home. When we arrived the kids were almost beside themselves with excitement as the desks and chairs for the classroom had finally arrived. They were all sitting at their desks and in unison called out Namaste as we entered the classroom - bought a bit of a tear to the eye. It was a sad moment for Charis as she had ... read more

Decided today to not stop working until electrical jobs were done. Couldn’t eat anyway so that was possible ;-). I managed to get the list of things done except for the broken water pump. Will try to fix that some other day. The funny thing that happens if things work out is that more and more repair jobs emerge. Now one of the boys asked me to have a look at his mobile phone (he got an old one from his brother and it didn’t charge anymore). It’s not my priority but will have a look at that later. Had a lot of trouble today getting all the lights fixed. Walls were not really suited to drill holes in, grips were bad, some light materials turned out to be broken or of bad quality, not having ... read more

October 21st 2008

Hurray, it's Megans birthday today! Happy birthday....! We will celebrate that this evening because we first have to do some final preparations for the sports day, so it's an early start today. First we have to go into town for some extra copies of the sports certificates that we will hand over to the children. Also some extra stickers because there is a fourth team all of a sudden (we had stickers for first, second, third place) and finally some plastic cups for water. Then we made a cord out of wool for the high jump game in case there is time to do that and we organized water for the kids (HE helped a lot!). A quick cup of tea and off to CWH where..... nobody was ready yet :-(. So we already started the ... read more

Yesterday evening Megan had a strange fever. During the night she was ill and that kept her awake all night. Not a pleasant night so in the morning she was tired but the illness had gone. To remain in that area, my stomach problem was still not over. Oh well, those things happen too. After breakfast we put on our old clothes to drill holes for the lights and go painting at CWH. Once there we found out that all of a sudden the mason man already was painting! So no painting for us and drilling holes was out of the question too. We decided to spend the day preparing for the sportsday tomorrow. To be honest that was time well needed! We went to the other home (Childrens Welfare Association) to get the names ... read more

This day turned out to be a strange day. Two of the boys showed us the playground at the lake to use for our sports afternoon and after that we went to the electrics shop to buy lights and switchboards and other items (i.e. a replacement for an outside light that really wasn't safe anymore). We also got a fitting for the new garden light and also took care of getting an adaptor to fit the fitting to the pole. The shopkeeper didn't have any but he knew a welder shop that could make one and he would take care of it, talking about service! At CWH everything revolves around money, especially getting money not spending it. I think they more or less expected us to pay for all the shopping but we just claimed not ... read more

Today at the home, came extra sand and cement so that the rest of the garden wall could be completed. The boys were amazing, further working on the trench digging and then carting the sacks from the trailer into the garden. The sacks must have weighed at least 30kg and some of the boys would hardly weigh that much but they carried them regardless. These kids have such an enthusiasm to learn and to help - I think they are often really bored and these sorts of activities bring them a break from the monotony of their lives. This seems to be particularly so during this, the vacation period when they don't have school to keep them occupied. We couldn't do much to help with the garden wall as the kids were making the cement and ... read more

Digging of the trench for the foundation for the garden wall and after that working at the electrics again. A couple of very heavy stones had to be moved for the foundation and everything was done by the children using picks and shovels (and they loved it!) except for the really heavy stones that I had to remove. Electrics was great fun again and another shocking experience (d@#$@#$@%%ned) but OK, we did find out some more of the cabling, including the cabling for the gatelight and the doorbell. We mentioned our evening out for the kids to the leader Bijay but he immediately wanted to make it a fundraiser. All we want is just a fun evening for the kids somewhere else than the home, sigh... Well we just have to be persistent about this and ... read more

Today again we were at CWH at eight in the morning. The mason man wasn't there yet this time as the cement, sand and bricks weren't available. But they did arrive today. The mason man started to cement up the wall and we witnessed a very unusual way of doing that (he more or less threw it up in the air and hoped that it would stick to the ceiling..), would have tried to do it differently but I'm not a masonman. Couldn't do much about the electrics today. We first had to get a load of new stuff from a shop to replace the old switchboards, powerpoints etc.. Try that without knowledge of the Nepalese possibillities in electrics in a shop where the people helping us didn't speak a word English (and I still don't ... read more

At CWH just after eight in the morning. The hired mason man for knocking down the wall and building new ones in the garden had already begun to tear down the wall. All the boys had to help of course! And they even started to knock harder when we just sticked our noses in the door opening ;-). I started to work on the electrics that had to be done. First had to check a lot of wiring and fuse boxes. The wiring is not really well coded from start to end so that is going to take some time especially when you only have a test screwdriver to check for current... Megan is trying very hard to get into contact with all the children and that is also easier said then done, but at least ... read more
