Snow day!

You wouldn't believe the amount of snow we had within 24 hours to mark the start of February. In fact you could make snow balls within 20 minutes of the first flake. We were out having dinner with a few other Aussies and Kiwis in Hammersmith when it started, and on the way home our street was full of people taking photos! Even the locals were amazed. Unluckily (or luckily) it was the worst snow the UK had seen in 19 years, and so on Monday, it was no surprise that all public transport was out. Six million people were stuck at home that day, with three feet of snow bringing London and much of the UK to a standstill. One of my colleagues walked an epic two hours to work each way, but darned if ... read more

Pretty Prague

We timed it perfectly to climb to the top of the Astronomical Clock tower on our final morning. Whilst the snowy weather on the first two days really accentuated Prague's beauty, the clear skies provided us with stunning views over the rust-red rooftops. Afterwards Laura, Phil and Gill made their way back to London, leaving Cat, Joel and I to roam for the afternoon. We walked for a good five hours, looping back over the many bridges that cross the Vltava River and taking photos of the sites we hadn't lingered at on previous tours. Foot weary, having circumnavigated the Old, New and Lesser Towns, we finished our trip with something a bit different by heading to Prague's Sex Musuem. Was hilarious to watch an old-school 1920s porn commisioned by the king, and the contraptions people ... read more

Luckily we were good boys and girls on Saturday night and got ourselves to bed by 2am. Prague nightlife is second only to Amsterdam, so it would have been easy to party on into the wee hours. In fact it was the sweltering central heating and not the absinthe that gave us the drys and had us taking our clothes off in the hostel!! We had a reasonably early start on the Sunday, as we were taking a tour out to the famous bone ossuary in Sedlec. Situated an hour from Prague, it was great to get out into the countryside and see more of the Czech Republic. The fields were covered in snow, and we saw lots of deer, rabbits and massive birds of prey. (They of course had nothing on the 'ice rat' we'd ... read more

Czeching out Praha

There's four distinct things I learnt about Prague. One, the architecture is varied and beautiful and even more so in the snow. Two, their absinthe is stronger than meths. Three, their food is so high in carbs it's no wonder the Czechs have the highest rate of colon cancer in the world. And four, the people have an amusing dry cynicism and make no excuses if they can't speak English. And it's actually very lucky I'm able to tell you that, as we nearly didn't make it to the Czech Republic... Cat, Joel and I left work early for Gatwick Airport, yet somehow all our trains got delayed by electrical failures, engineering faults and track trespassers. To cut a chaotic story short, after convincing EasyJet to print Joel and I boarding passes (because Cat had our ... read more

I'll add to this entry throughout 2009, as it'd be a shame not to share some of the shots from events we've been to during the year. And what better place to start than New Year's Eve at Hed Kandi! Held at the O2, it turned out to be one of the best New Year's that I can remember, with no stress about trying to get round to meet people. We spent it with my old Prudential workmate Trevor and his flatmates and I might even give London another whirl to welcome in 2010. January The next shots are from a 'Wearable Arts' party in Clapham. Alice in Wonderland-come-Joker was the look I was going for, whereas I think Transformers was Joel's muse. February You might think it's a tad psycho to buy someone a knife ... read more

Boxing Day at the Bridge

I don't just get up for anyone after only four hours sleep, so lucky I had Frank Lampard to coerce me out of bed on Boxing Day morning. That and the fact that it was the best weather we'd had in a long time - perfect for watching football. Hair of the dog and all, the first thing Joel did was to get back on the leftover champagne. Actually I lie. The first thing Joel did was call me about five times to see where I was when he woke up and I wasn’t in bed. (I was taking a shower.) Think he was on the turps from Xmas Eve till work four days later! So while the two Joel's got 'organised' I cleaned up the remnants of Xmas Day. Thank god we have a dishwasher ... read more

It would be silly not to spend at least one festive season in London, so this year we decided to play hosts to a big Christmas pot-luck lunch at our flat for all our 'Kiwi orphan' friends. A couple of days before, Clements and I stocked the cupboards in preparation as we knew we'd be calling family back home and going out for a few pints on Xmas Eve. Turns out that prediction was bang on, as after Joel had stuffed the turkey and I had called Nana and Grandy in Feilding and Grandy in Christchurch, we headed down to meet our old flatmates in Fulham for a few. It wasn't a big night, but we still gave it a good nudge and came home armed with a few boxes of chicken at around midnight. Xmas ... read more

December 20th 2008

We'd wanted to go to Bath for a while and with my ex-Auckland flatmate Joel (Clements) over from Bermuda for Xmas, it was a good opportunity to show him some of the UK. He lived with Cat and I at the Bondery for a couple of years, so she and Graham were also keen to explore the Bath Christmas Markets with us... It turned out these were in November, so luckily there was lots of other stuff to see and do! Hmmm...nice one Astle. Clements was in town only one night before we shot away for the weekend - as were our friends Gus and Lorraine who were off to Salzburg for Christmas - so we decided to meet for Dim Sum in China Town. Luckily I was recovering from the flu so started the night ... read more

December 6th 2008

The lead up to Christmas kicked off in earnest in early December, with Cherie and Ian's festive drinks in West Dreyton. After a stunning day's site-seeing at St Paul's Cathedral, Joel and I met up with friends Scott and Jamie, to make the overground journey out there. Having been drinking all afternoon, Jamie entertained passengers with his plight to become 'Nav-man' - Cherie and Ian live in the burbs - so it was his mission to find us the way! As Ian is a cop, I don't have any photos of the evening to hand, but we had a lovely night consuming snowballs, mulled wine and Ian's culinary delights. Needless to say after some Christmas-carol-karaoke, the trip back to London was entertaining... A week later, the Prudential Marketing team held their annual awards and Xmas bash ... read more

After what transpired to be the week from hell, I decided that I'd make the most of a stunning winter's day to go to St Paul's. (I needed all the divine intervention I could get after potentially losing my job, despite being in the middle of re-designing and re-writing Prudential's UK website, four good mates leaving the UK, my flat falling apart - the washing machine blew up, plumbing shit itself, net f*%ked out, water got turned off......oh, and a grand got skimmed from my account...) We spent a good two hours wondering around the cathedral, and whilst it was disappointing the very top of the steeple was closed in December and January, we got to see all the Xmas decorations. You weren't supposed to take photos inside, but I managed to sneak in a few. ... read more
