It’s been yet another long stretch since my last post - and I apologize for that – but it’s been a nutty week! For one, I moved into my new apartment on the 18th. That was a madhouse kind of day that involved a lot of panicked running around, a lot of money, a lot of yelling, and finally one distress call to Sara to come rescue me… which… naturally… she did. I will tell you, I have never seen the dynamics of a room change as quickly as they did in my apartment when I walked in with Sara. As it turns out, my suspicions that the language barrier was being used to take advantage of me were somewhat correct. A lot of significant issues were very quickly cleared up when I suddenly had a ... read more

Dear China, It’s time to turn off the Christmas music. Santa Claus is NOT coming back to town and I do NOT want you to wish me any more Merry Christmases this year.Thank you. Love always, Jessi. It’s been off to the races for team Sara and Jessi this past week. Finally, our schedule kicked in and we went almost non-stop these last couple days at work. Now that our feet are finally wet, our classes are going incredibly smoothly, and I’m getting to where I’m feeling pretty great about the marketing demos. But, the change in pace was so drastic that she and I found ourselves pretty wiped out yesterday. I mean… it didn’t help that our final demo consisted of 2 wildly spoiled identical twin boys coupled with… well… with more boys, so our ... read more

Enjoy a night out with friends, and take an active role in the conversation. See a movie or watch a play. Take an active role in keeping up with the beat. Well, Mr. Horoscope lady person man… ask and ye shall receive! Today was a VERY active day that led to a lot of picture taking, soul-searching conversations, cultural exploration, and general enjoyment of this city that I am meant to call “home” for the ... read more

It’s been a few days of darkness on my end, so I figure it’s about time for a little bit of an update. To be completely honest, I’ve been horrendously busy being bored. See, DE presented Maeghan and me with a choice last week: To dive immediately into a teaching schedule, or to take a role as a kind of marketing puppet for a while. I selected the latter in hopes of investigating as many avenues as possible while in this world of self-exploration. I’m really, really glad that I chose the route that I did in some ways, and am not so glad in others. To the positive end, I’ve gotten to know the staff and the building WAY better than Maeghan has yet had a chance to do. She is often stuck in her ... read more

I welcomed in the New Year last night with new people in a new city in a new world. I think I can honestly say that 2013 is bound to be a year of fresh perspectives, new insights, and loads of exploration! Maeghan and I have found that we are having a slightly more difficult time settling into a routine here in Hangzhou than we did in Shanghai. We have talked about this phenomenon at length, and have mostly come to the conclusion that the move to Hangzhou came with no time to mentally prepare, and has been generally overwhelming. We’ve felt a little homesick for our friends and familiarity in Shanghai, but I will say that I am very proud of how well we have managed to overcome this. Last night, I insisted that – ... read more

Where to begin… So, as I mentioned in my last post, I was very quickly moved to Hangzhou this weekend. The process did not, however, go as I previously mentioned (or thought it would, for that matter…). It all went down a little something like this: Around 4:00pm yesterday, I was taking a nap when I received a phone call from the Regional Director of DE that oversees my center. With the Hangzhou staff in a bind, he inquired as to whether I would be able to relocate – not on Saturday, but FRIDAY NIGHT in order to help cover a few classes. They made it seem like a choice, but a big part of me knew it really wasn’t. So, Maeghan and I made for the trainstation in a hurry to change our tickets to ... read more

...we SING goodbye!!! Biiiiiiig news! Today was our last official day of training, and tomorrow will be my last day in Shanghai! There has been talk for several weeks that those of us leaving Shanghai for satellite centers might be required to stick around in Shanghai for up to 2 additional weeks beyond training. Issues with visas, center requirements and travel challenges have all been cited as potential causes… however, it turns out that we have run into none of these, so I will be leaving Shanghai on Saturday. There is a bittersweet feeling associated with all of this. For one, I am just starting to feel comfortable with Shanghai: I’ve mastered the Metro system, I know how to get lost here, I have friends here, and so on. But I am also ecstatic about moving ... read more

As noted previously, we all seem to have made it safely to the other side of the 21st of December. Congratulations to all but the Mayans... it does suck to be wrong, so I offer instead my condolences to them. C'est la vie. We at Disney English on-boarding had yet another weekend off. So, the 5+ ventured out yet again on a spine tingling adventure through the streets of Shanghai. This particular adventure started on the other side of the Huangpu River at the base of the Pearl Tower. We had full intention of going out and getting mindlessly lost again, but instead opted for the good ol' fashioned tour bus. Yeeeehoooo!! For a measley 30RMB (yeah... $5) we got a 24hr hop-on-hop-off pass. Eat that, DC with your $26 a person!!! Naturally, I'm uploading the ... read more

So, I’ve been told a few times that it’s not too early to update again… so I’m updating again! The days continue to be packed with new information and all kinds of adventures. The group that I sight-saw with on Saturday has become something of my nuclear group of friends here at DE. We are far from perfect for each other as friends, but we are sharing these experiences and bring a lot of unique perspectives to the table. Since Saturday, the 4+ of us have spent time together literally every free moment. I say 4+ because there is this central group of 4 that then has a rotating 5th person. Our 5th has really turned into Chris from Ireland, so in fairness to him… it’s become 5+. We 5 have a fantastic habit of getting ... read more
