Welcome back! It's been a very long time since I last wrote. It's been one of those situations where nothing and everything has happened since my last update and, not knowing where to start, I kept putting it off and putting it off to the point where it's now been about 4 months. Life is good. Life is fine and normal. So much so that it's nearly painful, honestly. I have my routines, and each week blends into the next with the drone and drawl of normal life. Indeed, living in China has officially become just... normal. Recently, I've undergone a kind of reawakening. This winter, I got into the terrible habit of sleeping in a bit on my weekdays. See, we're not meant to be at work until about 1:30 on any given weekday, so ... read more

I'm not sure whether you'll find it as hard to believe as I do, but a year ago - on December 28, 2012 - I arrived in Hangzhou. This year came to a tumultuous close, ripe with insane new schedules, projects, personal strife and triumph alike, homesickness, future plans and, generally, the most difficult month I've faced to date. The great thing about writing about all of these things here, though, is that I can do so with a "hindsight is 20/20" twist that helps me to appreciate my journey as a reader, rather than a soldier powering through. So, as it has been a month since I've written and a year since I arrived, here is my tale of December 2013: My take on petty theft is this: objects are material things that can always ... read more

So... about 2 weeks ago, I was found sitting in the front lobby of my center all disheveled and woebegone because I was dreading my commute home. Averaging an hour and a half (which means it was significantly longer during rush hour) on public buses, or a 35rmb cab ride (that's really high...), the commute was really starting to get under my skin. Once home, it was typically straight to bed and straight out again in the morning - so all the glorious ideas of spending wonderful, warm evenings at home with my roommates went out the window months ago. Anyway, so two weeks ago I was grumbling about this when my boss, James, found me. His wife (Savannah), being jobless and having recently uprooted from Jilin, has been bored at home a lot these days. ... read more

Thursday, October 10 - Sunday, October 13 Zhejiang, Hangzhou and Shanghai, China Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. I can't tell you how excited and proud I was to present Hangzhou to Rachael. If nothing else can be said of her visit here, it is that the weather managed to cooperate completely over the course of the entire thing. Following a 2-days typhoon, Hangzhou was a sunny and beautiful 18°C/65°F both days, allowing for very successful traipsing. It was dried up and clear, and the air felt incredibly clean and fresh in our Beijing-ed throats and lungs. Hangzhou turned out to be quite possibly the best part of the entire expedition. Hangzhou, I've learned, is really unlike any other major city in all of China. Nothing has made me appreciate this place ... read more

Wednesday, October 9 Shaanxi, Xi'an, China Rachael and I, before her arrival, discussed at length what she would like to do for her actual birthday, given that she'd be spending it here in China. It seemed most obvious to have her standing on the Great Wall of China on her birthday but, as we had done this on the 5th, it seemed silly to think we'd be doing this again. We determined that she needed SOMETHING stand-outish from the overall trek, and so we came to the conclusion that the Xi'an Terracotta Warriors seemed like a great other-worldly experience to have to make her day count. And we were right. The Terracotta Warriors l somehow wonderfully managed to not read up a whole lot on the Warriors before heading out to see them. By not knowing ... read more

Friday, October 4 - Tuesday, October 8 Tianjin and Beijing, China Following our epic adventure on the Grasslands and in the Desert of Inner Mongolia, my friends and I decided to cut short and return to civilization a little early. This turned out to be one of the best decisions of the entire trek. It was a royal pain in the neck trying to coordinate five last-minute plane tickets... but air travel being as exceptionally affordable as it is in China, we made do with what we had available. By 5pm on Friday, the lot of us were comfortably situated in Annie's new apartment in Tianjin. Tianjin City One thing that surprisingly lacked over our couple of days in Inner Mongolia was meat. Tuesday, October 1 - Thursday, October 3 Inner Mongolia, China It has been a wild, wild whirlwind of a couple of weeks! As we determined, Rachael and I hit 8 cities in 12 days, and spent most of those days trekking around on foot. It was a fast-paced, adventuresome vacation, and both of us had brand new experiences of note. The first of these experiences was Inner Mongolia. To summarize our time in Inner Mongolia, it's a good thing that that is how we got started, because the only way for the rest of the trip to go was up! Hohhot is described as being an, "up and coming city," which, in reality, means it is a run-down ghost town with a lot of construction going on. There is absolutely NOTHING to do in that city. ... read more

As predicted, Fall is turning out to be a significant season for travel in this chapter book. Last week was Annie's last week in Hangzhou. On Tuesday, she packed up and moved North for the winter (dummy!) to Tianjin -- not far from Beijing. So, to send her off on a nice farewell, we headed off on a fantastic retreat to nearby Huangshan - Yellow Mountain. Not entirely surprisingly, Huangshan is like any typical mountain town in a Western country. There are small shops and restaurants, cable cars and bus shuttles to the hiking areas, and little bed-n-breakfast style hotels dotting the landscape. The mountain itself is incredibly majestic, and its name is not ironic... the rock is extremely yellow, especially in the morning light. I butted out of work a few hours early on Tuesday ... read more

Asia » China » Jiangsu » Nanjing September 12th 2013

This week, a few colleagues and I had a unique opportunity to explore a new city. There was actually a Disney English conference held in Nanjing (about 2-hours' train ride on a high-speed train from Hangzhou) this past "weekend" and so three of us went to this and took advantage of the fact that it was in a new place as well. Nanjing is a pretty interesting place. The 'jing' in Nanjing means capital, the same way that the 'jing' in Beijing does. Nan means south, Bei means north. So, I think you can piece that puzzle together on its status in the big-picture-Chicken that is China. Nanjing was actually founded in 495 BCE -- how about them apples? And that fact of China continues to blow my mind. My country's old buildings are 250 years ... read more

Holy cow how the months do fly!! I hate to talk about the weather... but seriously! It has been the center of our worlds in Hangzhou for a month, because it has been insane. Shortly after my last post, we had a week-long stretch of over-100 weather coupled with 80% (I kid you not) humidity. That, my friends, is disgusting. Downright disgusting. There isn't another word for it. This week? We're in the 50s and raining. Suddenly winter is here, and our bodies don't know what to do with it. Most of us are quite ill, actually. I'm finally getting over my crud, but this weather has been weighing on all of our bodies quite heavily. In other areas, though, August has been incredible!!! Annie, Taryn and I continue our shenanigans every week. This past week ... read more
