Today was our last full day in Paris and we decided to get on one of the tour busses which circle the main attractions with a get on /get off where you like system. We travelled to Notre Dame Cathedral where we went inside. The architecture is amazing, as is the artwork inside. Everywhere we go we seem to see ceilings painted with wonderful pictures. I am afraid that the Sistine Chapel may end up being just another painted ceiling. As you wander through a place like Notre Dame you can’t help but marvel at the place, and wonder at how craftsmen with hand tools created this masterpiece. The relative darkness of the place makes the wonderful stained glass windows even more brilliant in their colour and design. As we left the Cathedral the bells were ... read more

Wow, what a night, what a show. This was worth every cent of the approx 160 Euro each for the dinner and show. We were seated one person back from the front left corner of the stage. So close you could see the scuffs on the girl’s shoes, and mends in their stockings. The show is full of dance, colour and amazing costume. Some of the girls are topless, all are beautiful. It was a blur of feathers, sequins, and flesh; however the show is all class. The partial nudity seems normal in this bohemian setting and the mainly female audience didn’t seem to mind a bit. During the 3rd act, the stage retracted with the floor below and a huge aquarium (say 5m x 4m x 4m) comes out of the floor. Inside are 4 ... read more

This leisurely Sunday began with a stroll up MontMartre. We started from the famous Moulin Rouge, where we will be returning tonight for dinner and the show, and walked up Rue Lepic passing some famous landmarks of the area. We stopped at a cafe near the top for a drink and some people watching. Further along we found a market with artists selling their wares and services. We accepted the invitation by one to sketch our pictures while we stopped for a coffee at the local cafe. His efforts produced an interesting likeness, a unique memento of the day, and 100 Euro for him. A bloke selling post pack tubes appeared on cue and we parted with more cash to ensure our artwork got home OK. Beyond the market lies the church which overlooks the city. ... read more

It’s going to be a hot one in Paris today, around 32 degrees Celsius, so we headed out early to go up the Eiffel Tower. The views are spectacular and well worth the 1 and a half hour wait in line. Unfortunately, there were signs indicating the top was closed top for some reason, but the view from the second level/platform was good. After lots of photos we headed down and decided to head towards the Louvre where we planned to avoid the afternoon sun. One the way we got off the train by the Palace of Invalides and walked across the Pont Alexandre III bridge with wonderful sculptured columns topped with gold sculptures, and over looked by the Grand Palais. We walked along the Seine and over the Cleopatra’s Needle which was originally in Egypt. ... read more

The train to Paris was uneventful, 20 minutes through the Channel Tunnel and we arrived in France travelling through wheat and corn fields with small villages dotted around. On arrival in Paris we were tole the Gran De Nord train station was worth looking at, but I didn’t see why. Maybe coming off the train we were in the wrong part. My first experience of Paris is that of a grubby city, grifters abound begging for money so you need to be careful. Our hotel (Hotel Annexe, in Rue Taylor) is clean, although small (read...Shoe box). It has the smallest elevator I have ever seen, only 2 of us just fit inside. We ventured out on the train into the Eiffel Tower and managed to work out the Paris Metro to at least get us there. ... read more

Our second day in London and we headed down to the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, which due to the number of people became a disappointment as you could not see anything, especially as people push right by you to try to get a better view themselves. After it began we walked down to St James Park for a drink whilst waiting for our Buckingham Palace Tour timeslot. We walked back up to over look the Palace as the Changing of the Guard was finishing, by this time most of the crowd had given up, and the Band and Soldiers marching right by us back to the Guard Barracks so we got to see something at least. The Tour of Buckingham Palace was amazing. The architecture, artworks and splendour of this palace takes your ... read more

This morning started with a “flight” on the London Eye wheel. The weather was a little overcast, but dry, so the viewing was still good. The views from the top are wonderful and it’s a great way to identify where in London everything is. Following this we crossed the bridge to Westminster, past Big Ben, and walked on to Westminster Abbey. The Abbey is an amazing place with ornate stonework and stained glass, not to mention the marble floors in some areas and the ornate tombs of Kings, Queens, and other people. This is a walk back in time which I found fascinating. The self paced audio guide devices are a real help as they explain the significance of many parts of the Abbey; and they are available at no extra charge. Once we had wound ... read more

Drove down to London today and had a great run. We stopped for a break after Birmingham and still made it in about three and a half hours. The GPS directed us to the hotel near Earl’s Court and Rental car depot near Marble Arch spot on. I feel a sense of achievement of surviving the London driving experience as a non-local; in fact it was a fun adventure. Our evening was filled with “Mamma Mia” at the Price of Wales Theatre. We had Dress Circle seats and a great view. The show was marvellous. It’s been playing to sell outs for 10 years, and I can’t see it stopping any time soon. The crowd is filled with people from 5 to 80 which shows how the show and ABBA’s music transcends the generations. By the ... read more

We awake today to the first rain we have experienced in Lancashire. In lieu of a day at the cricket we decided to visit the historic walled city of York, with a detour through Leeds to try to sort out a refund on the cricket tickets. As we drove east the rain continued until we crested the dividing range when it stopped. This is the highest motorway in England and the views would have been wonderful, except for the drizzle mist on the way up blocking the view. Leeds is not the prettiest city I have driven through, in fact it looks very grubby, but to someone who lives or works in Leeds I am sure it has a charm and appeal. Given we will be travelling for the next month, the staff at the Yorkshire ... read more

Leigh is where Lynn grew up so it was a wonderful opportunity to visit this village. The area was built on Mills and Pits, so has a contrast between the working man’s home with rows of identical terrace houses on narrow streets to and those which were slightly larger with a pocket of front garden, to newer estates of lovely homes on blocks of land which allow for manicured gardens similar to those at home. This contrast adds to the character of this village. We visited Leigh Cemetery, which has been there for hundreds of years. I noted graves back into the 1860’s, but I am sure there were older than that. Local Cemeteries can show you much of the history of a place. We found the graves of Lynn’s Grandparents after some searching, which was ... read more
