Will we see a bear today? Jasper National Park has a high concentration of Grizzly’s and Black Bear, so the odds should be stacked in our favour; or so you would think! Our eyes scoured the roadsides, trees, and open areas in search of a bear, but it proved to be a fruitless endeavour. We had a sneaking suspicion that the bears knew we were coming and would hide behind the trees out of our sight! In order to aid people like us who wish to see bears, perhaps they should hang berries from trees to entice them from their hideouts and then a Kenny Everett style large hand with pointing finger would appear out of nowhere to point the little critters out. All done in “the best possible taste”, of course! Okay, so we didn’t ... read more

Before we left the Crossings Motel, we walked around the large gift shop and hoped to get breakfast, but we missed that by five minutes. The only thing we could find to eat in the little food area was oatmeal and raisin cookies and nuts, which we got, and a drink. Just as well, as there was nothing to eat until we reached Jasper later that evening! The drive up towards Columbia Icefield was again spectacular, aided by the clear blue skies and oatmeal and raisin cookies! We pulled over at the numerous scenic stops and admired the views as well as keeping an eye out for any sudden appearance of bears or other vicious carnivorous animals on the prowl. Depending on the density of the surrounding forest, we would keep a safe running distance (usually ... read more

It was a shame we had to leave Canmore, Banff and our nice hotel, but must press on in order to fit everything in we wished to see. Gail made use of the kitchen and made sandwiches for lunch with leftovers so that was hamburger buns filled with lettuce, ketchup, onions, tomatoes, and wait for it - stuffed jalapeno peppers! A rather odd sandwich, but there you go! Checked out at 11am after another breakfast of Lucky Charms. We took Bow Valley Parkway (Route 1A) up to Lake Louise, stopping off at Johnson Canyon 30k north of Banff to view the iced waterfalls. The lower falls were just over a kilometre away from the car park up through Johnson Canyon. The walk was pretty amazing, following the river along its route. Part of the walk was ... read more

Had a leisurely morning, getting up late and having a bowl of Lucky Charms before heading out for the day. Today we were just concentrating our sightseeing in and around Banff, stopping first at the still frozen Lake Minnewanka - ‘Lake of the Water Spirits.’ It was pretty, and after stopping for a short period we then drove further on to Two Jack Lake. Rounding a corner, there in the middle of the road, were three Big Horn Sheep busily licking the minerals off the asphalt. Can’t imagine that would be very tasty mixed in with car oil and the rest! Took some pictures before moving slowly on, and then rounded another corner and came across two big boys with very large horns, again with tongues lapping away at the road. They gave us a curious ... read more

Woke up to find it had snowed during the night, making it a beautiful sight first thing in the morning. About four inches had fallen and the fir trees looked lovely covered in snow. The only thing missing was Christmas! At least we didn’t have to scrape all the snow off the car as the hotel has heated underground parking. The morning started with us trying to find the Canmore Mountain Sanctuary Community Church, driving around looking for 1st Ave, which as it happened wasn’t named on the map. Ended up having to ask for directions at a local gas station, and discovered it was next to the hospital. The service was good and enjoyed it very much. Following church, we changed and then drove into Banff to take a walk around Bow Falls just outside ... read more

Skipped breakfast choosing to have a lie in instead, then set off at 10am towards Yoho National Park. The word Yoho is a Cree expression of awe and wonder, which is hardly surprising given that the park is set amid 28 peaks over 3000 metres in height. We stopped at the visitors centre in the park and picked up information before heading up Emerald Lake Road to view Natural Bridge and Emerald Lake which is supposedly one of the jewels of the Canadian Rockies. Natural Bridge is a spectacular natural rock bridge arching over the Kicking Horse River; it was once a waterfall which over time has gradually worn away the rock to form a bridge. We clambered out of the car with all the photographic gear and trudged to the falls. I soon became Liisa’s ... read more

The morning came around too quickly due to the alarm waking us up at 7am as we had a long day ahead of driving. Before checking out, we managed to upload the last two blogs, which was good as there is no WAP at our hotel tonight. Loaded the car up and Gail went next door to get our free muffin and orange juice so we could breakfast as we drove. Once out of Vancouver Liisa sped along, keeping an eye in the mirror for police, so we could cover as much ground as possible. It would be a long drive - approx 8 hours including stops for gas, food and picture taking. Our route took us from Vancouver via, Hope, Meritt, Kelowna, Lake Okanagan, Vernon, Revelstoke and finally to Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park ... read more

Today was a lazy day. Didn’t get up until around 9am, and then sat and updated the blog and sorted photos out until 1pm. The cleaners were banging impatiently at the door, wanting to come in and clean, but we made them wait until we left for the afternoon. Decided against yet another Mc D’s gourmet breakfast and had a chocolate instead - probably more nutritious too! Our first stop for the day was the Capilano Suspension Bridge originally built in 1889. This suspension bridge stretches 450 feet (137m) across and 230 feet (70m) above Capilano River. Not for the faint hearted or those who suffer from vertigo, as this bridge when you walk on it, moves up and down and sways from side to side. Unfortunately they don’t allow jumping up and down on the ... read more

The day started way too early, for people who are supposed to be on holiday, at 6am! Today we were going to catch the ferry to Victoria on Vancouver Island, 1 ½ hours away. It was tipping it down and we hoped that it would improve, as today would involve plenty of walking. Breakfast was again the delights of Mc D’s before heading to Tsawwassen ferry port. We arrived in good time so pulled out the lap top to update the blog while sitting in the car waiting to board the ferry. Once on, we strolled around the decks taking in the passing views, then moved down into the warmth to have a proper breakfast! We chose the ‘meatless’ breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs, hash browns and two slices of brown toast with jam and ... read more

Started the day with great excitement at the thought of seeing pods of Orcas, followed by great disappointment at our breakfast! Our hotel claims they provide a free continental breakfast, and when we checked in they informed us that we would need to collect vouchers; however we didn’t think too much about that at the time. At reception we collected our breakfast vouchers which turned out to be Mc Donald vouchers for a free coffee and muffin!!! Continental breakfast my foot! I guess we will be frequenting the neighbouring Mc D’s. Liisa nipped in to collect breakfast, orange juice and fruit and fibre muffin, then we made a swift departure and drove to the nearest camera shop 30 minutes away so Gail could buy a new camera lens cover! As Liisa hopped out the car, her ... read more
