The day started with a very nutritious breakfast to sustain us through our morning’s snorkelling trip organised by the resort, which consisted of two pastries and some pineapple! The resort puts on two snorkelling trips a day, one at 10am and the other at 4pm, but apparently the best viewings are in the morning when conditions are better. The morning trips are further away and tend to be about an hours boat ride by dhoni, and today we had eight Italians and the British couple, who in fact are the only other British people on the island! They fly home tomorrow so it’ll just be us flying the Union Jack from now on. Well, the sea decided to be at it’s roughest we were told by the Brits since they have been going, so we were ... read more

We awoke to a glorious sunny Sabbath day and had a very lazy start after some bible study. After lunch we decided to head out into the lagoon for some snorkeling, this time heading further out to the reef as apparently it’s quite shallow there and the fish are supposedly very good. As we donned our masks and fins, a lady a few bungalows down came towards us and said she would show us a good place to snorkel. She was from Sheffield, one of the few other Brit’s on the island. Before we even had time to put our masks and fins on she was off like a shot, so hurriedly we threw ours on and swam after her. She was setting a good pace and so by the time we made it to the ... read more

This is our first day where we actually ate three meals out of a possible five! So far we’ve only managed breakfast and then dinner as the meal times are somewhat odd. Breakfast is from 8-1pm, Lunch 1-2pm and Dinner at 8:30-10pm. There is afternoon tea at 5-6pm but as of yet we haven’t made it. The food is pretty good, and seems mostly continental with a favouring towards Italian - could that be because most of the guests are Italian? The Italians do a good job of eating! They are like vacuums and eat about 4-5 ladened platefuls of food at each sitting and the annoying thing is they are all skinny!!! What gives? Gail and I just have our one plate and sometimes this is followed by dessert. The guests seem to be Italian, ... read more

Exploration day! Well, okay, so we only got as far as exploring the one end of the island, but eventually we will see the whole island at some point. After breakfast we walked up to the sandy bank part of the island, which seemed miles away in the heat, but in fact it was probably just under a mile or about two miles round trip. This didn’t bode too well with Liisa as she added a couple more blisters to the collection on her feet. Along the way we passed the presidential suites which were huge, but we both agreed that ours seemed much nicer and had more privacy in front of the bungalow towards the beach than those had. They were exposed to anyone who happened across them. A little further up was the beautiful ... read more

This seems to be coming a habit! The day starts late, followed by a trot over to the breakfast pavilion on the sunset side of the island where today we indulged in a freshly made waffle topped with nutella, a pastry and fresh fruit. Our waffle chef brought us the waffles and then stayed to chat to us about his life working here. He is from Sri Lanka and has been here nearly 5 years. He told us about the Tsunami and how it hit this island. The resort was hit by two waves, the first one was large enough to swamp the island before retreating and then he said the water around the island drew out to over ½ a mile away before the second wave hit covering the island in over 4 foot of ... read more

Day 2 on Palm Beach Island started with the promise of sunshine. I awoke early leaving Liisa to snooze away whilst I sat on the deserted beach watching the last of the sunrise with clouds of yesterday dissipating. I was rewarded with the company of a lone heron starring out to sea probably sizing up his next meal for practically a whole hour. The clouds were clearing nicely and the sun was breaking through so we headed to the coffee bar for breakfast around 11ish, which was a typical continental affair of pastries galore, brioche, a selection of waffles, omelette's made to order and a delicious fruit bar with cold sausage meats and cheeses. We sat at a table closest to the beach and enjoyed the beautiful view and sea breezes while we ate. Having eaten ... read more

With hasty goodbyes to Gail’s dad, the taxi took us to Gatwick Airport for the start of our journey to the Maldives. We were flying with Monarch Airlines and after some research online we discovered they were just a glorified sardine tin, so we spent a little extra and upgraded to Premium Class for more legroom and better service. After checking in we hastened to the executive waiting lounge, following our perfume purchases, so we could catch the beginning of the Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton was in the lead when we had to move along to board the plane, where we overheard a man on his mobile in stunned disappointment - the gist of the conversation was that Hamilton was out of the race! How disappointing! Our flight was uneventful, the food good, the seats narrow, ... read more

Once again the itchy feet have taken over and we're off again, this time for two weeks of relaxation, recuperation and some much needed sun! The weather has been horrible here in England so it's now time to leave it behind and head for "Paradise" in the form of a 1000 tropical islands in the Maldives. We will be flying out this Sunday and staying on one of the Islands, spending the time swimming, snorkelling, canoeing, sailing, lazing on the beach, swimming some more and enjoying the Island. We can't wait! Gail has already bought herself an underwater housing for her camera so we can share our underwater discoveries with you. We hope you enjoy your time with us! Stay tuned. The odometer said it all. After 3488 miles our trip was finally at an end. It was with great reluctance that we handed the keys to our car for the last 3 ½ weeks and headed into SeaTac airport to check in. We would miss the comforts and ride of the car, especially when we arrived back home to our old but reliable Toyota. Once again there were only trolleys that you had to pay for the privilege of using, so we dragged our four cases behind us to the check in desk miles away from the car rental drop off. Before we could check in the lady made us weigh all the bags to see if they all were below 50 lbs each, otherwise we would incur a $25 fine per piece. Unfortunately one of ... read more

Our breakfast arrived, brought in on a linen covered table once again. We had ordered Vegetarian Benedict - two poached eggs with roasted vegetables and a jalapeno cheese sauce with breakfast potatoes nested on homemade brushetta. This was accompanied by tomato juice for Gail and grapefruit juice for me and a hot drink. It was very delicious but we were still full from dinner yesterday so couldn’t fully appreciate the breakfast. Once done we called the porter to collect our baggage and car. The car packed we headed off to the ferry port in the rain which was a couple of minutes away from the Empress. While waiting for the ferry we had to proceed through US immigration before boarding the ferry to Port Angeles, Washington. Seemed rather strange that it was done on Canadian Soil ... read more
