My son Will, who has been teaching English for the last year in Bangkok, Thailand, was planning to move to Europe to attend law school. He didn't want to fly there directly; preferring to take an overland route across South Asia. I suggested to him that this route was difficult...not sure if you could even go from Thailand through Burma to get to Bangladesh...and certainly going through Pakistan and Iran would pose some dangers. Perhaps he should consider overlanding at a higher latitude...like the Silk Road. He agreed and asked me to go with him. Having just spent beaucoup bucks on our 40th anniversary trip across the South Pacific to Sydney and then New Zealand, I wasn't sure I could afford such a trip. I turned him down initially. But in the back of my mind ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand October 17th 2012

Introduction New Zealand had always been the primary destination for our trip. Many of our friends had been there and raved about what a beautiful country it was and how we really needed to experience it ourselves. Given that we had decided to take a repositioning cruise that wouldn't get to Sydney until 14 October, and given that we wanted to spend at least a few days there, and given that we wanted to be back home by 1 November due to other responsibilities, and to vote for our next President, our time in New Zealand was constrained to 15 days. I had a rough idea of where I wanted to go...all the top spots...but didn't know the travel times as people kept telling me that the roads were winding and narrow. We also had to ... read more

15 October 2012 Monday. Linda, Will, and I were not scheduled to be at 's home until noon, so we had some time to tour the Sydney CBD. Our first stop was the Queen Victoria Building right around the corner from our hotel. This shopping arcade was once left as derelict, but some historic preservation people recognized its worth and saved it from the developers demolition crew and turned it into a posh fashion designers mall...Victorian of course. We could only afford to window shop. Next we walked to Chinatown which isn't worthy of the name China or town as it is only about two square blocks with mostly Thai and Korean shops. We did find a store where we purchased some souveniers for our grandson Liam. It was time to catch the train at the ... read more

Our ship docked at 6:30 am, and we were rudely woken up by the efforts to tie up at the Circular Quay. We didn't disembark until 8 am so had time for a leisurely breakfast. Before getting off I took advantage of the view the 10th deck provided and got my first pictures of the iconic views that represent Sydney...the Harbor Bridge and Opera House which we were docked between. Upon disembarking we retrieved our iron from security and caught a taxi to our hotel, the Swisshotel in the center of the CBD...a great hotel at a great location for a good price. In our room I paid for 24 hours of internet service which was not forthcoming so I left the computer on and went down to the business center to read my email for ... read more

Oceania » New Caledonia October 9th 2012

9 October 2012 Tuesday. We arrived at Lifou Island of New Caledonia shortly after breakfast. The weather was overcast once again. Nevertheless, Linda and I lined up on the sixth deck for the pass to get on the tender which would take us to shore. The island looked interesting from the ship…a low lying limestone and coral island with plenty of palm trees and some stretches of white sandy beaches. A church was located on the hills on either side of the beach we were headed for. Upon landing we walked to the grass shacks that sold souvenirs, and Linda bought a lava lava or sarong or whatever they call it in New Caledonia that our daughter could use as a table cloth. Then we walked to the top of the ridge which formed the backbone ... read more

Oceania » Vanuatu October 8th 2012

7 October 2012 Sunday. Sea day, which was pretty much as described previously. 8 October 2012 Monday. We arrived in Port Vila, Vanuatu at breakfast time. Vanuatu is another of those South Pacific Islands favored by “The Survivor” reality TV show which Linda and I have followed since the first season. Vanuatu used to be called New Hebrides, the name given it by Captain Cook when he arrived in the islands in 1774. He was preceded by Portugese Captain De Quiros in 1606 and Captain Bougainville in 1767. But it was the Americans who arrived there in 1942, just ahead of the Japanese, who made the greatest impact on the people. The Americans built the largest forward operating base in the South Pacific, from which it would start to turn the tide of WWII. One officer ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Suva October 6th 2012

6 October 2012 Saturday. We arrived in Suva, Fiji at 8 am as we were having breakfast. The rain had followed us from Samoa, but it soon changed to overcast skies for the rest of the day. We disembarked and walked along the waterfront to a Catholic Mission that Mike had volunteered at 3 years ago. We talked to the priest for a bit; but he wasn’t the priest that Mike knew from his last visit so we didn’t spend much time there. We then walked down the hill to the botanical garden and Fiji Museum. There were mostly canoes on display. Linda bought two necklaces from a lady who had two small girls who looked like they could use a good meal. While the girls headed along the main shopping street back to the ship, ... read more

Oceania » Samoa October 2nd 2012

2 October 2012 Tuesday. After five sea days we finally arrived in American Samoa, or Eastern Samoa. Upon disembarking, I had now visited all the American territories. Prior to the visit I had researched Polynesia, and read Somerset Maugham’s book of short stories starting with “Rain.” This collection of short stories gave me good insight into Polynesian culture, and especially their hospitable nature. We disembarked after breakfast and were greeted at pier-side by the Visitors Bureau, the National Park Service, and a million vendors. We headed directly to the Park Service and found out that they offered a ranger guided tour of the American Samoa National Park at 9:30 am at the cost of $25/person for the shuttle bus. So we signed up and had to wait an hour, which the girls used to look at ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Pacific September 27th 2012

27 September 2012 Thursday. This was our first full day at sea, with four more to go before we arrive in Pago Pago, American Samoa. So we slept in to 8 am and had breakfast at the Windjammer Café above the bow of the ship before touring the ship to see what was on offer. We also perused the daily Compass schedule to see what events we might want to attend. I relaxed by the pool until the first event…Progressive Trivia at 10:15 am…which will be ongoing for the days we are at sea. A group of people called me over as they were short one person. Our team is “Oz and US,” there being three Australians and three Americans. Anyway, the American couple had been on the cruise from Vancouver to Honolulu, and half of ... read more

North America » United States » Hawaii » Maui » Lahaina September 26th 2012

26 September 2012 Wednesday. The cruise ship arrived off Lahaina, Maui by 7 am. After breakfast we caught the first tender to the port, and the shuttle to the rental car company. I really wanted to go to the top of the Haleakawa volcano, a National Park, but Mike, Betty, and Linda didn’t think we would have enough time to drive there and back (about 6 hours) before the ship set sail. So I reluctantly gave in. The rental car agent recommended we drive the 90 minutes to Twin Falls on the north side of the island on the Hana road. We got there and found the jungle trail to be very muddy. The girls decided to wait at the car while Mike and I hiked to the falls. In addition to the mud, we also ... read more
