Two and a half weeks after I returned from Canada, the family left for the States on home leave. This was the first time that all the relatives would see Will who was now almost a year old. But first we would visit the Pacific Northwest to include British Columbia, fly to California, and drive from California to Colorado. I believe in breaking in our kids at an early age for road trips. Tamara was almost five and Rosanna was almost three, and they all did great. 20 July 1990 Friday. We flew from Brussels to Chicago where we spent the night at an airport hotel, having learned previously that it is better to avoid connections late in the afternoon when there is a possibility that thunderstorms could disrupt the follow on flights. 21 July 1990 ... read more

Just two weeks after our quick trip to northern Norway, we had our annual official visit to another host nation; this time to Canada. Although spouses were invited, I didn't take Linda along as we had been to Canada many times before, although not to Quebec; and we would be taking home leave to the States and western Canada just a little over two weeks after returning from the Canadian trip. 22 June 1990 Friday. The trip began with a flight in a military cargo aircraft to the Canadian Air Force Base a Lahr, Germany in the Rhine Valley. There we had a brief tour of the base and its facilites, and then boarded the weekly passenger jet flight that took Canadian forces personnel back and forth to Canada. Our first stop was at Gander Air ... read more

Although our usual Infrastructure Committees visits to various host countries were a week or more in length, upon occasion we took trips to see only one or two projects of significant interest. In these cases we didn't take the spouses. On this occasion, Norway wanted NATO to fund a radar site on top of a mountain in northern Norway. They wanted to show us why this location was of strategic significance, and the difficulty, and therefore the higher cost, of building in such rugged terrain. So on Tuesday, 5 June 1990, we flew from Brussels on a Norwegian military cargo aircarft to Bodo Air Base in northern Norway above the Arctic Circle. From there we took several Huey helicopters to an existing radar site in the Lofoten Islands, where we went through a tunnel into the ... read more

Tamara was now in Reception at the British School, so we now had to time our Spring vacations with the school holidays, something that would control our loives for many years. Vacation was limited to the period between Good Friday and the Wednesday following Easter...not the whole week after Easter. 13 April 1990 Friday the 13th and Good Friday...I wonder how ofter that happens! We drove from Overijse to Calias and caught the ferry to Dover and then on to Red Hill just off the M25 south of London where we checked into a Travel Inn for the night. We ate at the Beefeaters restaurant next door. 14 April 1990 Saturday. We continued our drive to Bath, where we stayed with our friends and former colleague from NATO, Robin and Rhonna and their two girls Claire ... read more

December 30th 1989

I happened on a great deal from Club Med for a ski week at their club at Leysin, Switzerland, where the kids were free and Linda and I were half price. So from Saturday, December 30, 1989 through Saturday, 6 January 1990 I spent a week skiing while Tamara and Rosanna participated in the children's club that included some very elementary bunny slope skiing, and Linda watched Will, who was too young for their children's club. When I say I skiied, I perhaps overly exaggerate. The snow conditions were not ideal, and I had to exchange my skiis halfway through the week when the metal edge came loose from hitting a rock. I joined an English speaking class; the other option was French. In reality both were French because our instructor didn't know any English. I ... read more

As Linda was in her last trimester over the summer, we decided not to have a summer vacation. I don't know why that would have stopped us traveling except perhaps the last month, but I have no record of having taken an extended trip. My desk calendar for 1989 shows that I canceled a trip to England and Scotland from 13 to 29 July, and that I was very busy at work during the timeframe. We also had frequent visit to the doctor as Linda got closer to delivery. I did take at least one day off each week over the summer so I guess we visited a lot of local sights. Will was born on September 15th at the SHAPE Hospital. The maternity ward was being renovated, so they had set up a MASH unit ... read more

After switching to the Infrastructure Committee which met on Tuesdays from the P&P Committee that met on Thursday, my Easter vacations could start on Wednesdays instead of Fridays. We always looked forward to vacations in the Spring as the long cold winter was over and the flowers were blooming and the sheep were lambing...life was once more upon us and we had to get out and enjoy it. This was especially relevant as Linda was now four months pregnant with new life within her. This time we headed south to the Alps and on to Northern Italy, Tuscany and the Ligurian Sea. 26 April 1989 Wednesday. We drove from Overijse to one of our favorite places in Switzerland, the small village of Steckelberg, at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley south of Interlaken in the Bernese ... read more

As a result of my Dad's death in August, and being short staffed in my office at NATO, where some days I was expected to be in three meetings at once, in November 1988 I had a panic attack for the first time. I thought I was having a heart attack, but the doctor in the emergency room assured me that I was fine. However, for the next six months I was on a minimum dose of Xanax. Four days after the attack, the first reinforcements arrived in the form of Mike and Betty, our friends from Germany. Mike had been hired to take my place on the Infrastructure Payments and Progress Committee when I moved up to the Infrastructure Committee. I was scheduled to attend an Executive Development Seminar held by the Office of Personnel ... read more

The committees trips to Iceland was prompted by the refusal by most countries in the committee to grant further exceptions to the International Competitive Bidding rules that allowed sole source procurements through the Icelandic Prime Contractor for all NATO funded construction in Iceland. As the U.S. represented Iceland on the committee (Iceland has no armed forces; their Foreign Ministry was only a dozen individuals located in offices above the Reykjavik Fire Station), we decided that it would be best to take the committee to Iceland to hear first had from the Icelandic authorities why it was in NATO's and Iceland's mutual interest to continue as usual. We also would take this opportunity to show the committee the results of their extensive funding of airfield facilities at Keflavik, POL facilities at Helgavik and the radar installations under ... read more

I have put off writing this account, but realize if I am ever going to complete the record of all my trips I have to get over this hurdle. 17 July 1988 Sunday. By now we had learned that if we were going to fly through JFK on the way to somewhere else in the U.S. it was better to stay overnight at a hotel near JFK, because late afternoon thunderstorms were likely to create havoc with all further flights that day. So we flew from Brussels to JFK and checked into our nearby hotel, just as everyone else whose flights we cancelled were looking for rooms for the night. 18 - 23 July 1988 Monday through Saturday. So with jet lag on Monday we caught a very early morning flight to West Palm Beach where ... read more
