Well, Mike, I think you were right. Before we came to South America you mentioned Huaraz as one of your favorite, or perhaps your favorite, town on your trip. Huaraz looks to be my favorite place as well. We have spent a full 8 days here, significantly more than anywhere else, and it has been fantastic. Huaraz is a town of about 120,000 people, sitting at about 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) in elevation. It is bordered on the east side by the Cordillera Blanca, which has a plethora of 5,000+ meter tall mountains that are snow covered and glaciated year round. On the west are the Cordillera Negra which are not as high, but still impressive mountains. The Cordillera Blanca are encompassed by Huascaran National Park, which we explored quite a bit on our visit...although we ... read more

Travel is this wonderful, amazing, incredible thing that allows you to have all kinds of new and different experiences. It provides an avenue for learning about new cultures and provides you opportunities to learn about yourself. And other than a short period on our way to Puno, I have loved every second of it. And so we keep traveling and writing about the places we have been and all the fascinating things we see. Well, for me, that all came to a hault in Arequipa and continued until we got settled in Huaraz (yes, we are a little behind on our blogging). Perhaps it had started before Arequipa, but I had never really noticed. While travel is such an amazing experience, you rarely hear about the challenges. And with this blog being somewhat of a journal ... read more

After a much faster cab ride back to the Civa bus terminal, at about 6:30 pm, we negotiated seats for the Civa affiliated Rodriguez bus to Huaraz. I thought the bus was at 8, but turns out it was at 9, so we had some time to kill. Fortunately there was a big soccer game going on and the TV in the terminal was surrounded by fans. We were only a few blocks from the soccer stadium and now regretted not asking the hostal about attending a soccer game. Big time bummer because we had even thought about asking and we definitely would have gone to the game. Apparently it was a big game. We have no idea who the teams were, but the team everybody was cheering for lost 1-0. Given the proximity to the ... read more

Stay in Lima or not? This is what we found ourselves asking as we arrived in the Civa bus terminal around 12 on Friday afternoon. Lima is the capital of Peru and is home to over 7million people making it the largest city in Peru -- by ALOT. Arriving in a big city is quite different than many of the smaller towns we´ve been in the past few weeks because asking a cab driver to drop us off ´in the center of town´ to find a hostel just doesn´t work. So as not to end up in an undesirable part of town, we decided to go to the Gringo Heartland aka Miraflores district for the night. Hostal Pradera Verguna welcomed us with open arms and we quite enjoyed being in the nicest hostel yet. A walking ... read more

We arrived at Hostel Santa Catalina at about 7:30 in the morning. And this is something we have not really talked about, but is worth mentioning here. The check-in/check-out process/times for hostels is remarkable. You could never check in to a hotel in the US at 7:30 in the morning. It just is not an option. Santa Catalina, however, had a room pretty much ready to go for us. I am assuming the room had been occupied by people who went out on one of the early morning tours (read as early as 2:00 AM). The hostel setup was really nice with great views from the rooftop deck. We soaked those in before setting off on a self tour of the city. One of our Peru books had a short walking tour that highlighted the 18th ... read more

Monday night, after a long long day getting back from Machu Pichu, it was another quick dinner of the day and off to sleep. Tuesday became a relaxing day as we planned to take the 8:00 PM overnight bus to Arequipa. It is a 10 hour ride and almost all the bus companies go overnight. We are both very much ready to leave Cusco. While the adventures outside of Cusco have been amazing, neither of us have really loved the city itself. Again, for me, I think it is just too big. Good luck Jessica and Francois in the next 7 months of your travels! The bus ride to Arequipa was yet another adventure. We arrived at the bus terminal at about 7:00 PM and the negotiating began. Prices ranged from $25-60 soles (which was awesome ... read more

In attempt to get to Machu Picchu on the road less travelled we were also going to be traveling on the road less known. Most people get there by catching a bus from Cusco to Ollanytambo then catching a train to Aguas Caliente, which is the town at the base of MP. But to make the trip a little more adventerous (read: significantly cheaper) we decided to catch a bus from Cusco to Santa Maria, a collectivo from Santa Maria to Santa Theresa, another collectivo from Santa Theresa to Hydroelectrica, then walk along the train tracks 3 hours until Aguas Caliente. Was this going to work? I was hopeful and Matt seemed confident. There was little information on times and availbility of collectivos but our hostel host gave us some information and we joined forces with ... read more

From our incredible jungle trip, we returned to Cusco exhausted and very smelly Thursday evening (7ish). Hostel Andrea did not have one of the nice rooms that we had previously stayed in so we shared a room with a young French couple. They had just arrived from Arequipa after a challenging bus ride. They were the perfect people to share a room with as they were exhausted as well and planned to be in bed early. So, after a nice nearby dinner, the entire room was asleep by no later than 10:00. Friday, the 6th, was a relaxing catchup day. We explored Cusco a little more. Had an awesome lunch with Alpaca. It was Good Friday so there were some small parades and things. We changed hostel rooms so we could get a clean shower. We ... read more

Jungle jungle here we come! At 5am our tour guide, Marco, picked us up at Hostel Andrea to begin our trip to Parque National del Manu. Along with our 4 traveling companions we slept through the first 2 hours until arriving in the small town of Paucartambo. Marco, who we soon found holds an incredible amount of knowledge about everything in the area, gave us quick walking tour and explained the huge yearly Virgen del Carmen festival that now attracts thousands of tourists to the tiny town. People from all parts of the jungle and adjoining towns come for the ultimate dance-off and at the end the dancers get into a WWF style fighting competition until a victor prevails, usually a dude from Cusco. Perhaps Dancing with the Stars could add a new twist next season? ... read more

The Loki Hostel was rather far from the bus terminal atop a huge hill overlooking the city. The hostal was gigantic, with a max capacity of 280 people. And they only had 4 beds free, fortunately two in the same room. Our room was by far the biggest we had stayed in and had 13 people in it. There was a bit of chaos with which beds were available so we set out to grab some food and check out the main parts of town. Only a few steps out of the hostel, a tour company, Amazon Tours Peru, beckoned us in to their shop to talk about tours. We wanted information on all kinds of things so we sat down and talked about a number of tours. The biggest focus was a tour in the ... read more
