From the elegant cobblestoned streets of Colonia del Sacramento to the skyscrapers of Buenos Aires, which were visible almost as soon as we had left the Uruguayan shores. There was no doubt we were about to arrive in a big, busy city and a bit of a culture shock after the peace and quiet of the last few weeks. Still it would be a good acclimatiser before our return to London....The skies were also cloudy and there was rain in the air so it was almost like home! As we boarded the ferry, a North American voice from behind greeted us: "Welcome aboard the JuanPatricia..." It was Jim, our neighbour from Punta del Diablo! We had a quick catchup but HAD TO take our seats as we were booked into first class! They had met a ... read more

Punta del Diablo proved to be everything we´d hoped, not exactly a quiet little fishing village as it is becoming a popular destination , but still a laid back little village with gorgeous beaches and crashing Atlantic waves. We were lucky to find a little cabana (hut) right on the point, with no electricity (candles are romantic right?), a hammock and a stunning view along the playa del viuda (widow´s beach). We spent 6 days here! We met up with Duncan and Lorrienne who had been at the ranch. They popped over a few times for braai (bbq) and more schloofdoof (Henry´s South African concoction of a hollowed out watermelon with oranges, pineapple.... and vodka!). We had a good time relaxing here during the sunset and into the night, sharing stories of our trips. We were ... read more

Having arrived in Salto, our first task, as usual, was finding somewhere to stay. We also needed to get some Uruguayan money, have lunch and sort out our onward ticket to Tacuarembo. Sounds easy....... The hotel was simple enough, we checked into the Hotel Concordia, reputedly the oldest hotel in Uruguay and frequented by Carlos Gardel (the legendary tango singer) in the 30´s. It was an amazing place with a beautiful tiled courtyard and some wonderful old furniture in the bedrooms. We asked where the nearest ATM was and set off to sort out some cash. The nearest machine spat out both of our cards and no money. We asked the security guard where there was another machine and he told us that none of the machines were working (apparently all of the teachers had just ... read more

It was clear that this place was isolated. It is an amazing reserve of wildlife, but routes to get here are limited to two - the one we took, the four wheel drive was all over the "road" and the other, going south, we heard was passable. On the way down we saw two cars in three hours, but plenty of cattle, sheep, horses and birds. We were dropped off on a dirt road (all roads in this place were dirt) next to a house which seemed to be near nothing. It was scorching hot. The question to the driver of where the centre of "town" was, was answered with a waving hand pointing down another dirt road. So we stayed where we were... Later that day we walked down this other dirt road that had ... read more

We arrived in the town of Puerto Iguazu (there is no port) and decided to stay a while as there was much to see - mostly of the nature reserves and waterfalls. The first day we explored the little town, which surprisingly did not feel touristy despite existing mostly for that reason. In the afternoon Henry bought an Argentinian football shirt and when leaving the shop we bumped into Toke and Line, the Danish couple. We all had a delicious tropical fresh fruit drink together and caught up with a few stories to tell. That evening we went to a newly opened restaurant and stuffed ourselves with pizza starters, massive steaks and a bottle of wine. We were again treated with a free bottle of champagne at the end of the meal! The following day we ... read more

Arriving in Argentina and heading to Salta by bus from the Chilean border proved to be quite a deserted affair. Besides the moderate mountains and the 4 metre high cacti, it was pretty average scenery following our previous few weeks. It was also not helped by the fact that we were presented with ham and cheese sandwiches for breakfast, elevenses and lunch! It got better though...towards the end of our journey the exposed rock faces blended into rainbows of different colours. Dark reds colours were adjacent to bright greens and gunmetal greys, caused by different minerals within. It was also evident how much wealthier the country was comparitively as almost every house was brick, had a satelite dish, and 4x4 outside...and the buses are first world! We were now consistently at lower altitude and the weather ... read more

We knew we had arrived in Chile as the mini bus did not rattle and shake...a tarred road! The temperature also became noticably warmer as we dropped altitude. Customs were very efficient as they searched every inch of our rucksacks (fortunately not of us!). One of the american guys on the minibus was asked by a lady customs official whether he voted for George Bush, to which he answered ´no´...(obviously). She said someone needs to get rid of him and pointed two fingers to her temple... Chile is much more expensive than we have been accustomed to. In fact, it is the most expensive country in South America. It is much more developed with modern vehicles around and even pavements! (Though the obligatory stray dogs are still the norm) The town of San Pedro de Atacama ... read more

We decided to cross to Bolivia via Copacabana, a touristy little town on the banks of Lake Titikaka with white beaches and a relaxed feel about the place. Before entering Bolivia we made sure we were up to speed with the latest scams in the country, as there have been a few incidents over the last few years...fake police asking to search bags, fake taxi drivers etc all resulting in loss of possesions. We also took an organised bus that departed Puno, stopped in Copacabana for an hour (changed buses too) and then finished in La Paz. This made the border crossing simple and ensured we were traveling in a large group of people. Our lunch consisted of grilled trout in basic huts on the beach overlooking the lovely bay filled with pedalos, canoes, and yachts. ... read more

We decided to take the tourist bus from Cusco to Puno, a bit longer and a bit more expensive but it meant we could stop off at some more sights along the way, have lunch and enjoy the live performance of a local panflute band. The route was extremely picturesque - we ascended in a valley alongside the Urubamba river with the snow capped Andes in the distance. (The Andes are gorgeous! - very different to the Himalayas as they consist of less dramatic peaks that spike up into the air, but it appears there is much more flat highlands where small communities live). First stop was Andahuaylillas (getting the bus through the narrow streets was an experience in itself) with a lovely jesuit church - looking further into the structure though it was interestingly pointed ... read more

Fourteen hours on the overnight bus took us from a vast desert at sea level to rainy season at 3600 m above! Not too bad a journey...until we had to walk up several steps to find our accommodation panting from lack of oxygen. We decided to phone a hostel and approached the nearest pay phone. It wasn´t working and we noticed a piece of paper stuck in the coin slot. As we had heard that kids often do this to gain some cash so we decided to fix the problem. Henry took out his penknife and removed the blockage. We inserted 1 soles but the phone still didn´t work, however when pressing the return coin lever 5 soles fell out. We tried again and got another 5 soles...that´s worth nearly 2 quid and a meal over ... read more
