Here in NZ it's Auckland Anniversary weekend so a good excuse to hit the road (or the sky) and do something a little bit crazy so we (Becky, her friend - Amanda and I) headed off down to Rotorua and then onto Taupo for a bit of adventure. A friend of mine told me that you should do something every day that scares you so, taking his advice, I got kitted up in a lovely boiler suit, goggles and leather flying hat and took to the skies above Taupo. After flying up to 15,000ft it was time to disembark!! The first minute was freefall - impossible to describe but a totally amazing feeling. I had the biggest grin on my face the whole time, well, until I decided that my teeth were too dry to grin ... read more

Visiting parents presented the perfect excuse to revisit the beautiful South Island. This time we took a slightly different route to fit in some of the places we missed last time. Our journey began with a slightly scary descent between the mountains into Queenstown. From there we headed out to Lord of the Rings country for a horse trek around the mountain flats, crossing rivers galore and soaking up the amazing scenes. The weather was not always in our favour so our trip to Mount Cook (the highest in NZ) was a bit of a washout - we never actually caught a glimpse of the great Mt Cook but did capture some "wow" moments en route. Our 2nd drive up the west coast presented identical weather to last time - rain, rain, rain - so we ... read more

21st September 2008 - Waiheke Island: Winery tour In September Becky's parents came for a quick visit so we took the opportunity to explore a little bit of paradise close to home. Waiheke Island is just a short ferry ride from the big city but feels like a million miles away. Sunshine, gorgeous waters with dolphins playing near the shore, wineries around every corner - what more could a girl need???... read more

For our next adventure we planned a weekend jaunt to Rotorua, an area around 3 hrs south of Auckland which has a high level of gepthermal and volcanic activity. We were joined by Rachel - another escapee teacher from the UK who works at a nearby school. We had a great time exploring gurgling, boiling mud pools and steaming lakes and crevices; relaxed in natural thermal pools (smelly but soothing) and had an unexpected night on the town ensuring that it lived up to it's nickname of "Rotovegas"... read more
