After a pleasant overnight train journey (pleasant in comparison to Malaysia anyway!), we arrive in Chiang Mai - and only just over an hour late. We had already booked accommodation so off we trekked out of the station ready to be harassed by tuk tuk drivers. Funnily enough, it isn't half as bad here we found a driver and showed him the directions, but following the patten that happens a lot out here, they didn't have a clue where it was, not even when we showed him the map! Bon made a poor attempt at pronouncing the road name but the guy seemed to understand and with a big smile, we set off. Chiang Mai is a lot bigger than we originally thought it would be, with the old city enclosed by a moat surrounded by ... read more

Songkran almost ruined our travel plans! The new year in Thailand is a huge event and turns out that a lot of people tend to head to the islands for a break. So when we tried to get transport to Bangkok we were told that all the trains were completely booked! We eventually stumbled in to a more helpful travel place and were told we could get to Bangkok today but it would involve a slow ferry crossing (4 hours instead of 2) and a overnight bus which would leave at 19:30 and get to Bangkok at 5:30am. We were ready to leave so we decided to go for it. So we spent the morning slowly getting ready and managed to watch a video taken on Heidi's last dive before we said goodbye to everybody and ... read more

Today we set off for Koh Tao, I'm especially looking forward to this stop. The diving here is meant to be the best in Thailand and I am tempted to take my PADI Open Water! We packed our bags and jumped into the taxi (not a taxi in the sense of taxis at home, basically a van with benches in the back). It was a bit cramped with around 12 people packed in. We were all just minding our buisness taking in the scenery when there was a bit of commotion from the couple at the front (who we were sitting next too). I had a good nosey about.....HORROR, there was this spider making its way towards us. Now this spider wasn't particuarly large, but it jumps, was white and furry and looked like it had ... read more

We had arranged transport to Koh Phangan....we were getting a bus to Chumphon and then another bus north to eventually get a car ferry to Koh Phangan. It was going to be a long day of traveling the best part of 8-9 hours! We got up early and packed and made sure we had plenty of time for breakfast before we were picked up. However disaster struck....I (Bon....yes I'm writing this one) had ordered my banana pancakes with 20 minutes to spare but the hadn't come when the transport arrived. The receptionist hurried us on to the bus and I was left regretting the bad start to a long day. We started off and had another pick-up right round the corner, two German guys who we were due to spend pretty much the whole day with. ... read more

We were picked up from our guesthouse at 11am on the dot, which is something of a rarity being on time in Thailand. We got into the airconditioned mini van which we had all to ourselves - what a pleasent journey we had ahead of us. We started to drive around Krabi and we picked up two more travellers, some post, some dry cleaning and a number of other random bits. We drove out of the main town centre and pulled into this shabby shack and was ordered out of the van and piled into an area containing about 60 other people. We were hussled into a corner after stupidly saying we had no accomodation - the guy was like you can have this one or this one and pointed to two faded old posters, neither ... read more

We woke up early ready to leave beautiful Phi Phi for a quick stop over in Krabi Town before heading over to Khao Sok National Park. We brought early tickets so we would have whole day to explore Krabi. However disaster struck when the longtail boat's rudder got tangled in the rope!! After ten minutes struggling the guy finally jumped in to untangle it before shooting us across the bay just in time to catch our ferry. It was very full but we managed to find a couple of spare seats. It seems bad luck wanted to follow me today and an hour into the journey the air conditioning decided to leak right above my head for the remainder of the journey!! We got to the port and were ambushed by the taxi people and then ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don April 6th 2010

So we set sail for Koh Phi Phi (for those who are unaware Koh Phi Phi is one of the main locations where 'The Beach' was filmed). Phi Phi is split into two islands Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don. Phi Phi Leh is a National Park only accessible by organised trip or by hiring a boat and has no accomodation. We arrived at the harbour of Phi Phi Don in the early morning and were quite surprised to find out we had to pay to enter the island - something that had only started 2 days prior!! However it is only 20Bht per person and apparentley it goes into protecting the island (or someones pocket!! hopefully not the pocket!). So when we arrived we hadn't booked any accomodation and were a bit worried. Although ... read more

We woke up on day 7 at 7:15am, a little sad we were already leaving Koh Lipe. We took a stroll down through the little street and had a lovely breakfast in a cafe before heading down the beach to see if the speed boat we had booked really was a speed boat - we really didn't fancy a 5 hour ferry ride to Lanta, 3 hours was much more appealing! We strolled up to the immigration centre where we were checked in and we were pointed towards one of the long tail boats sitting in the bay, so we climed in and waited to see where it was going to take us. You really never know out here, you ask to go somewhere you end up somewhere else, you book a speed boat and end ... read more

Asia April 1st 2010

Tuesday Morning we woke up early ready to set sail for Koh Lipe, one of Thailands most southernly Islands. We rocked up to the harbour waiting for our promised speedboat. Then we waited some more and then some more (is anyone else getting the picture here?). Finally we were escorted to the pier where we jumped into a little boat to be shipped to the main transport.....however speedboat it was not!! I think we had been done!!! To be fair though the Tigerline ferry only took about an hour and a half to get us to Lipe. We arrived in paradise! The seas were crystal clear, the sun was shining and the beach looked idylic. The water taxis transported us to the immigration office, where we picked up our passports grabbed a map and decided where ... read more

Friday Afternoon was spent on a little trip to Kuala Lumpurs Batu Caves, A Hindu Shrine in the mountains to the North of Kuala Lumpur City Centre. We took our first bus ride which wasn't that bad ie we got the right bus and arrived without any drama. The bus dropped us in the middle of a busy intersection so we had to manouver our way through traffic. We eventually got to the safety and were greeted by a huge golden staue and 270+ steps up into the mountain!! The cave itself wasn't what we were expecting to be honest a little disapointing, in fact I was more interested by the hoards of monkeys checking us out. You can see their beedy little eyes spying for stuff to steal, when they realise you have nothing, you ... read more
