Heidi and Bon

Before I digress about our time in Nha Trang I must first tell you of our time in Saigon waiting for the overnight train. We left our bags in the travel place had a drink and I decided that I wanted to sit in the park for a while and watch the locals who gather in their hundreds some running, some just chatting and a few playing badminton. We'd only been sat for about a minute when a young lad came over and started chatting. I was obviously sceptical at this point he said all the stuff that sends alarm bells ringing! I'm a student studying English and where are you from etc etc. Then two other lads came and sat right in front of us and at this point I was clutching my bag tightly ... read more

Having arrived at HCMC airport for our 10.am flight, I was distraught to be told the flight was cancelled due to technical difficulties. In true Heidi fashion every programme of air crash investigation flashed before my eyes! However we were pretty sure once we boarded the next flight at 10.40am that the technical difficulty lay in the fact the 10am flight was empty and luckily our new seats were right at the front so we got plenty of leg room, not really an inssue for me, but a blessing for Bon. Phu Quoc is a relatively undeveloped island surrounded by powdery sandy beaches fringed with palm trees and turquoise waters, the area is due for massive development in the next few years and to see it unspoilt you need to go now. Something we were quite ... read more

The bus journey from Cambodia to Vietnam was failry uneventful apart from the usual chaos with assigned seats being sat in by somebody else etc. The actual border crossing was easy as long as you already had a VISA, you weren't allowed on the bus without one. We just handed our passports over once on board and got them back once we were in Vietnam more or less....SIMPLE....and at no extra charge (take note Cambodia). Saigon or Ho Chi Minh city was just a couple of hours away....but already you could see just how different Vietnam was. It is much more developed than Cambodia....with the usual attractive scenery etc. The roads were smoother and wider a huge improvement. Saigon itself is huge and scooters are everywhere....still feel uneasy driving through the cities here even as a ... read more

This is the capital of Cambodia....our only other stop here besides Siem Reap. The bus from Siem Reap was relatively painless apart from Heidi feeling a little sick. We arrived at the bus station and there were as usual plenty of tuk-tuks looking for business. We jumped in one and drove to a hotel we had chosen based on the review in the book and the price. Everything in the capital is notably more expensive....so we went with a mid-range, it was a little out of town but we only planned to stay two nights so weren't being too fussy. The traffic here is nuts....I've said it before and I will say it again. I don't know how there aren't accidents on every crossroad. There was visibly a lot more traffic in the capital as well. ... read more

We left Don Det early, just as we were boarding the boat for the mainland it decided to pour down and we got well and truly soaked. When we arrived on land Bon went looking for breakfast leaving me sheltering from the rain under a little metal shack. Suddenly hoards of people started boarding the waiting bus and I was torn between jumping on, the bus leaving without Bon and being stranded with no money and Bon being stranded with no luggage, or waiting and having to spend the 12 hour bus journey sitting next to some stranger....dilema. Bon always goes at he worst times!!! I suddenly saw him walking up the street and ran onto the bus, there was only a few seats left but luckily there were two together. We headed to the border, ... read more

Surprisingly I didn't sleep too bad on the bus and at 6.30am we pulled into Pakse bus station. In true traveling fashion, we didn't have a clue if we were staying on this bus or changing buses for the journey down to Don Det. Everyone got off the bus so after a few minutes we wandered off and were told to sit in the waiting area for a new bus. We saw a few guys who we had been separated from the night before and sat down waiting until 7.30am to roll around. Suddenly from feeling fine, I came over all dizzy and had to run to the toilet as I felt really sick. I found my way back to Bon and sat back down feeling slightly better, only for that feeling to return again a ... read more

The trip to Vientiane was a fairly easy one! It's only a 3 hour drive or so, what seemed to take longer was rounding up the passengers just to drop us a few minutes walk from where we started...a laughing point for much of the journey. We even managed to suss out where we were as we arrived...so no need for a tuk tuk we set off in the direction of a guest house we'd read about. After a short walk.....we arrived.....it looked very nice. Asked about the rooms....and they were way beyond our budget. Not phased we set off to another which sounded reasonable.....a sign outside said 'FULL'. In the heat with backpacks....a 5 minute walk seems like 60 minutes. So we gave up with the guidebook and just jumped inside the first guesthouse we ... read more

Woke up nice and early ready for pick-up, even had time for a sandwich and a chance to check the internet. The pick-up was a little late as usual, late enough that I went to check with the travel place we hadn't been forgotten. It did arrive eventually and ferried us to a bus station where there were mini-buses packed and ready to leave. We jumped in an empty one and were soon joined by a large group of friends and a Spanish couple. We set out shortly after and let me tell you this was one hell of a white knuckle ride. Never have I had to grip the seat in front with my legs and hands so much just to stop myself being thrown around. Literally was thrown from my seat several times. On ... read more

Asia April 29th 2010

We woke up and had our breakfast and collected the pack-lunch that our guest house had provided and made our way to the boat, nice and early in order to get a good seat. We were looking for our boat number from the day before.....but got pointed towards a different boat. We had read somewhere that quite often they switch boats so we weren't that surprised. We were however a bit surprised at just how different this boat was!! Gone were the nice seats.....the space......all replaced by wooden benches one after the other (Would our bums survive the 8 hour journey!!!). We were reluctant to get on and kept saying "boat 10, boat 10" but they would just reply "Louang Prabang" and point, so we boarded the boat. When we eventually got on we saw the ... read more

We woke up bright and early to get to the bus station and book our tickets to the Laos border as we were advised. Had brekkie at the hostel and the owner a really nice guy even drove us. We arrived before 7:30am and joined a bigger than expected cue at the Thailand Green Bus company to buy our tickets. When we eventually got to the counter....disaster again struck! The 8:30am bus had completely sold out! We were left with no choice really but to get tickets for the 1pm bus or stay another night in Chiang Mia. So reluctantly we bought the tickets and faced a 5 hour wait in the station. We were both pretty cheesed off and spent the first hour barely talking to one another. After a little exploring we found an ... read more
