We left Bristol for the short trip to Bath. We had been told Bath is a must see city, and that proved to be absolutely true. Famous for its Roman Baths and Georgian architecture Bath certainly didn’t disappoint. BATH We did a bit of a drive around on the way in going through a park with beautiful gardens and stopping to see the Royal Crescent. The Royal Crescent is a group of luxury residential dwellings in the shape of a crescent. Built between 1667 and 1774 it is considered to be one of the very finest examples of Georgian architecture. Some of the existing homes remain but the Royal crescent now includes a luxury Hotel/Spa and some of the properties have been converted to flats – it is no less impressive from the outside though. There ... read more

ENGLAND-WALES-ENGLAND... The guy organising our breakfast at the Hotel in Chester was French, I was wearing my black NZ Football shirt – he was very keen to talk to me about the World Cup (especially the last one!). Generally the RWC isn’t featuring over here although now the final squads have been announced it might get some more press. Not surprisingly England cricket has captured the limelight at the moment, although nothing compares to coverage of football –it’s great! Today we left Chester and headed back into Wales, our first stop was the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The Aqueduct is an amazing feat of engineering especially when you consider it was completed in 1805 – it is the longest and highest Aqueduct in Britain and carries the Llangollen Canal over the Valley of the river Dee. The structure ... read more

IRELAND TO WALES TO ENGLAND Today we had an early morning start, breakfast at 6.30am so we could make the 8.20am sailing from Dublin to the Welsh port of Holyhead. We travelled with Stena and the ship was huge (significantly bigger than the Interislander Ferries at home). Once again the weather gods were on our side and the trip across the Irish Sea was a calm one. There were a group of football supporters sitting near us, by 9am there table was full (literally) of empty beer bottles-they were in for a big day! Once we arrived in Wales we headed north through the country side to the small seaside village of Conwy, we passed a huge castle ruin as we can me into the city. We just had a half our break before heading to ... read more

WATERFORD TO DUBLIN Today we travelled up from Waterford to Dublin – Ireland biggest city. It was mainly a travel day – even more so because our visit to Dublin Castle had its time changed to 4.30pm – making it very tight as we leave at 6.30pm from the hotel for Dinner and Irish Cabaret. We decided to give the castle a miss (we’ve seen a few already!) and have a quiet afternoon to catch up on some rest. ON THE ROAD As we travelled across country we saw a number of war memorials in town centres – these were memorials to IRA ‘soldiers’ who had lost their lives in the struggle against the protestants – many had the names of the fallen listed. It’s hard to believe as you pass through one idyllic village after ... read more

DAY OUT IN DUBLIN Today was a full day free in Dublin. We had a guided tour early in the morning which lasted about an hour and a half, the tour ended in the centre of the city and we were free to do whatever we wanted – just needed to be back at the Hotel by 6.45pm for tonight’s show Ragus (it’s a Riverdance type show). The show is actually in the Hotel which makes things nice and easy. Dublin is a very busy city, but has lots of pedestrian areas and is fairly easy to navigate. They have made a real effort to keep traffic out of the city with Park and Ride, a light train network and the reintroduction of Trams. Another interesting feature is a number of push bike stations all around ... read more

KILLARNEY TO WATERFORD Today we headed across the bottom of Ireland from Killarney to Waterford (famous for its crystal) Our first visit was to Blarney Castle, from there we stopped off at Waterford Crystal for a factory tour and ended our night being entertained at a tiny Irish Pub in the small coastal town of Dunmore East. BLARNEY CASTLE We had the option of kissing the blarney stone and we thought why not! So we climbed up through Blarney Castle (another narrow spiral staircase), we had to be careful with our footing as the steps are authentic to when the castle was in its prime. – not smooth, very narrow and very steep. We climbed to the top of the castle (along with thousands of others – there was a constant stream from bottom to top ... read more

KILLARNEY We have visited some awesome places on our travels so far and are having a fantastic time. However if we had to pick a favourite city so far it would be Killarney Ireland. We had never heard of the place prior to leaving New Zealand so it wasn’t on our radar at all, but it is just brilliant. To be fair it is regarded as a tourist Mecca in Ireland and is accordingly well geared up to cater for tourists – the town is full of Pubs and Souvenir Shops! It is big enough to have all the amenities but has very much retained the character of a traditional Irish city. It also borders a wonderful national park. Today we did the ‘Ring of Kerry’ at trip around the Iveragh peninsula (part of which went ... read more

BUNRATTY CASTLE Today started with a visit to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park in north Munster. It was just a short journey from our Hotel – in fact right next to Durty Nelly’s . Bunratty Castle was built in 1425 and after falling to ruin from the early 1800s when it was abandoned by its owners in favour of a more conventional dwelling. It was completely restored in 1954 and is now the most complete and authentically restored castle in Ireland. We had a guided tour of the main rooms and an excellent explanation of how the castle functioned in its prime. The initial introduction was done in a room which had the original floor dating back to the 1400s-amazing! We were then free to roam, we climbed up to the turrets at the top of ... read more

ELVIS IS ALIVE! But before we get to that today we travelled from Sligo to Limerick for the most part via some smaller (B) roads. If we thought the main road were a bit rough then these ones bounced us all over the place! From Sligo we headed to a lovely little village called Cong, its claim to fame is that the John Wayne movie The Quiet Man was made there. Obviously it was some time ago (1952 I think) but the shopkeepers were more than happy to let you know! The roads in the small off the main track villages are very narrow and Cong was no exception. Unfortunately the correct way into the village was blocked by a car. With no owner in sight we had to go the wrong way up a one ... read more
