Day 6 Part 2 - Tortuga Since he had so much to do today we had to break up the fun a bit. We headed out for an early dinner at a great restaurant in town. It had eclectic decorations and a large menu. We figured 90 minutes would be plenty of time to eat, but of course that was not enough, so we were late for the sea turtle presentation. But we got the jist of it. They come on shore, dig a hole (nest) poop eggs, cover up and abandon their 80-100 babies. The entire group of approximately 20, which is way too big, loaded into the back of a really big truck and drove about an hour to the nature preserve. This way is by no means a comfortable ride as the ... read more

Day 6 - Riptide 1 DT 0 - Surfer Safari Day 6 started with another semi early wake-up as we had to catch the morning waves with Alfredo, who is the Peruvian version of Gene Wilder from the original Willy Wonka. We headed to the hostel to get fitted for our boards and rash guards. Good news, we had a dedicated photographer as Amy could not participate due to doctor’s orders. After getting our gear we headed off in the back of a truck about 20 min to the same beach Chester and Kirsten had surfed a year earlier. We proceeded to get our not so quick, quick dry lessons on how to stand up and where to put your feet. Then off into the ocean we headed. Little did we know we would spend most ... read more

Day 5 - DT Ladies 1, Mombacho Volcano Nill - We conquered Day 5 started early with breakfast that we had to cook, but did not have to clean up. Bonus. We got dressed in our DT uniforms. Our guide and driver picked us up at the house at 8:30 and we were off to Mombacho Volcano about 1 hour away. We got a lot of info on the agriculture and history of the area on the way from our guide Roberto, who looks 10 but is a mature 21. By the end of the ride he realized he was going to have his hands full. We transferred from the nice A/C van to a German Mercedes, circa 1046 troop transport truck. We headed up a very steep road and think the transmission was left about ... read more

Day 4 - Tortuga - A day at sea (5 Aug 2010) Day 3 ended with the girls arriving safe and sound around 10:30. Once everyone got settled we sat down to chat and have a few beers. Only the bedrooms have A/C, so Kirsten not wanting to waste energy shut Maija and Jenn’s bedroom door to keep the cold A/C air in the room. Unbeknownst to her the door locked automatically. After a fun night of catching up, everyone ventured upstairs to go to bed. But oh no, Jenn and Maija are locked out. No problem, there has to be a key here. So we find a cup of keys in the junk drawer. As Kirsten starts to try them all, she realizes it is not good when pieces of metal begin to fall from ... read more

Day 3 WTF . . . Get us off this island (4 Aug 2010) So we started out another day in Paradise or so we thought. After a night of watching a really bad Lifetime-like show with Ellen Degenerous and Tom Selleck, we were ok with falling asleep during the show. We had a wake up time of 6:30 am so we could try and hike the waterfall. We were determined to make it to the top of something on the island. We were ready in plenty of time to have a lovely breakfast, only to be interrupted by those damn birds dive bombing our huevos rancheros. So after fighting off the three birds who wanted our breakfast we waited in the lobby for our guide to take us to the waterfall. We had a 7:30 ... read more

Day 2 - Chester and Kirsten nil; Volcano one (3 Aug 2010) We woke up at 6 am and prepared for our big hike. We ordered sandwiches and 3 liters each of bottled water the night before so we had something for the trek. We were suppose to get our own guide, but ended up sharing a guide with a kid who just graduated from high school in South Africa. We took probably a 10 mile drive to the base of the volcano, which took the driver 30 minutes to navigate the roads, free-range animals and children walking to school. At the base we started the hike that was just over 1,000 meters of elevation to a beautiful lake at the top of the volcano. It really seemed like our guide and Ricky, the high school ... read more

Day 1 of our Nicaraguan Adventure, 3-Aug-2010 The adventure started by flying out of Houston into Managua, Nicaragua. Chester of course insisted on getting to the airport at least 90 minutes before the flight left, while Kirsten was doing her best to spend as little of time possible in the airport. She did drive to the wrong terminal to ensure shaving off a few minutes, but it didn’t work as well as she had planned. Flight was on time and uneventful, which it should be. We arrived to a rainy capital, oh yeah, it is the rainy season down here, so we were expected a few showers. The luggage made it, which is always a good sign and so was our driver. We took a 2 hour drive to San Jorge to get on a ferry ... read more

Day 18 We were able to sleep in a little on day 18. We packed up our stuff and headed to the airport to fly from Cappadocia back to Istanbul. We arrived Istanbul in the afternoon and headed straight to a Turkish Bath House. We were a little nervous, because of previous of our previous Egyptian massage experience. We walked in and were handed, yes, our own sponges!!! This simple hygenic gesture put us a little more at ease. We walked through the hallway and made it to the women's section and soon realized that yes, this is a Turkish Bath house. There was a bevy of large, topless Turkish women walking around in their underwear; then they directed us upstairs to get ready. We were given a thin towel, about the density of a scarf ... read more

Day 17 Our day started with a 4:11 am call to prayer. All of our hotels are located near mosques, sometimes we can hear the call, sometimes not. This morning, it was loud and clear. It didn’t really matter too much though, as we had our alarm set for 4:15 am to get ready for a 4:40 departure to our sunrise hot air balloon ride. We arrived way too early at the launch site and just stood around watching all the balloons get filled. The process took at least an hour, but it was really cool watching all the other balloons inflate and lift off. Our group included 2 other American women from Seattle and a group of 10 women and one youth from Italy. It was a loud bunch, even at 5 in the morning. ... read more

End of Day 16 We finally arrived in Kayseri around 4PM and had a 1 hour drive to Cappadocia and our hotel. We were a bit worried when we saw the outside of the hotel, but upon entering the room we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is built into the side of the hills in caves. The room has arched ceilings of stone and the bathroom is about the size of the bedroom with an open shower. Chester can finally shave her legs without any complaints. As our shuttle pick-up in Izmir was an hour late they tried to make up for it by giving us a night out with traditional Turkish dance and food. So who are we to turn down a free night of fun. It would be insulting right? So after a bit ... read more
