Untitled for three Daytrips..... truly;
a break obviously makes a huge difference - comments are lilting, inviting, cheery - along with the pictures........ and educational for the grandkids - if they take the time!
so glad you've had the break.... and wish you the gutz/ability to hang on to your 'Current Presence' as you return to the ......... Rooms!
Blessings and continuing Joy........
And, Is, I trust you realize you'll be one of the Codgers before too many moons......... and, that ain't all bad! Elder-in-law
Un Americano a Roma That was a fun trip...I knew the minute we walked out of the Termini that I was going to love Italy. That first meal at the Piazza Navona, seeing the Colosseum, the Pantheon...subsequent trips and other cities have been fun but none have been like Rome.
Viva Roma I recall our first day in Rome during our trip together and thus understand your allusion to greater comfort in cool weather! Glad you had the time to explore at a more leisurely pace. Our best during the holidays!
Traipsing around Brindisi Ciao Dave!!
It is tough to go without the company of family and friends at this time of the year. I miss do my Christmas season stuff like going out to a fine dinner and the Nutcracker or other holiday offering. Look for a Christmas card from Italia! :-)
Sleep-a-thon stats Beth slept Friday evening on the couch from approx 6PM until 10:30PM...got up an headed to bed and promptly slept until approx 9AM Sat morning...ate an orange then slept again until 2PM...watched a bit of tv then fell asleep on the couch for another 4 hours approx...watched a bit of tv and then went to bed...got up Sun morning at around 8AM...no doubt there will be some afternoon snoozing today...in a previous life she was a bear.
Birthday Boy! Yes another birthday is easier to take when celebrated under those circumstances :-) And the anniversary is an easy one to celebrate..."Hey lets go to Alberobello for our anniversary!" :-)
happy birthday Sorry that I did not email you earlier but was spending time w/Dougs family in the Midwest for Thanksgiving. Happy Birthday!! It seems that you had a nice one, beauuutiful pictures!!! Ciao
La Bamba -Looking Italiana Other than the shoes...the tourists we met on our trip to Calabria said that they knew Beth wasn't Italian. We asked how they knew and one said, "The shoes." That was too funny.
La Bamba Hey, I think I know the Spanish version to karaoke! At least I think it sounds good when I sing it in the car! Beth is looking quite Italiana in these photos, that Brunette vixen...
Shivering in Matera More to follow! We are on an all out plan to get in as much travelling as possible between now and mid summer. I also have some local pictures that I have been meaning to post. I will be posting pictures of some of the local shops and shopkeepers that I have gotten to know. We are just bowled over by how everyone has been so friendly and kind.
Matera is one of the main reasons I want to visit Basilicata, glad it seems to live up to its reputation! Other reasons include going to small mountaintop villages like the one you have a photo of...intriguing!
Shivering in Matera Famous last words as we packed for that trip..."jeez, do you think we need something a little warmer?" Remember the golden rule of cold weather: If you are warm, you can always take it off, but if you are cold you can't put it on if you don't have it with you.
Freezing in Italy I think I recognize Beth's jacket in the photo, and have some pictures of her shivering in it in Nothern Italy. Of course, we were all wearing the same clothes in most of those pictures!
Road Trip _ Pt II Well Sis, come for Christmas! I am busy checking out places to go see for the Christmas Season. I'm thinking Midnight Mass in Rome for sure...going to mass with the "Big Guy" should rack up some points...don't you think?? :-) We have three weeks off and plan to spend all of that time travelling, eating, drinking, and sightseeing....is there anything else???
want to go Italy so bad!!!!!! God I love the colors of trees and the change of seasons, please make sure you stay there until your term is up. I want to go even if that means, one week with no pay. I want to taste the food, maybe a little vino, it is so beautiful.
Road Trip - Pt II As for Halloween, the Italians supposedly don't celebrate this day...we saw Halloween decorations all over the place. And, last night we saw kids wandering around with the full costume get-ups and Trick or Treating. We even had two kids ring our gate. I went out and told them we were told that the Italians didn't observe this day and we didn't have any candy. One of the kids said "Well the kids do." So I said "Sorry." Like Charlie Brown they walked away with a rock :-)
Road Trip - Pt II The next time we go, we will head down the other side of the toe. At Civita, one of the guests raved about skiing the slopes in the Aspermonte region and seeing the Straits of Messina and both sides of the Mediterranean at once. He was quite adamant that it was a spectacular sight. We do want to travel through the hills and take in the the Calabrian countryside.
Working Hard! to make sure that when you come to visit every dining exerience is a memorable one. Its tough not-so-lonely work but some one needs to do it. I hope to range far afield in search of little villages that have some fabulous little ristorante or trattoria. We hope to drive into the Calabria province sometime soon. We are looking forward to your visit.
I was sitting in an Irish pub and the crowd was doing singalongs. A friendly chap asked me to stand up and sing and I hesitated. He said to me, "If you don't sing you'll never be one of us. You'll always be just a tourist." So I sang.
I travel to meet the locals and go to the places they hang out for dining, drinking, and fun. I go to be more than just a tourist. Who wants to be treated as "just a tourist?" It is a hell of a lot fun to be more than just that.
In the words of my hero, Anthony Bourdain: "Be a traveller, not a tourist." ... full info
