Our last stop! Well I write this from home, which doesn't seem quite right, but anyway... We planned to stop in Singapore on the way home as we thought it would be a contrast to Bangkok. Was it what?!!?? I couldn't imagine a bigger contrast! Everything so streamlined, spacious, shiny, clean... There were roadworks down the road from our hotel, and not only did they have a sign notifying of the blocked lane... and apologising for the inconvenience... but the sign had a large sad (apologetic) face on it! On the first day we went for a walk to the harbour past the legendary Raffles Hotel, but soon found ourselves lost in huge, interconnected shopping centres where once the harbour was. It was hard to fathom. It was supposedly sale time in Singapore, but we ... read more

Welcome! Last time we were in London it was Winter. Wet and miserable. I was looking forward to the 'other' London. For the first 5 days of our visit we had wet and miserable weather!! In fact it was so bad that parts of the country flooded. A father was clearing a drain when his foot became trapped in it and he died of hyperthermia. Tragic. The newspapers were full of stories about the rain, and stories about the terrorist attempt at Glasgow airport and the arrest of the participants including those in Australia. But there were also stories about the start of Le Tour de France of course! Amy complained that our newspapers weren't nearly as interesting as those in London (although I think she was referring to the reports about the romantic attachments ... read more

Hi all, Sorry this is a bit tardy. We had a great time in (or rather all around) Soubes. We took day trips to the beach. We drove up in to the mountains to try our hand at canoeing, see limestone caverns, and visit a Templar walled city. We visited many historic towns and cities - each one different and with its own fascinating story. We drove to the Camargue nature reserve to see the legendary flamingos and white horses. We often had very long days, and there was not much time in the evening to catch up on other chores! We were lucky to be able to rent Sonjia Montgomery's house (www.houserentalfrance.com.au) in the charming village of Soubes. We invited some friends from Melbourne to share it with us. Luckily one of our friends ... read more

Bonjour (or bonsoir - whichever applies), OK, well maybe I'll stay here (instead of the Cotswolds)!! We've spent 8 full days here, and there is still more we would have liked to see. Our apartment (in Rue Rambuteau) is in a perfect position. We are about 30m from the Rambuteau Metro station and the Pompidou. The street is full of fruitiers, cafes, small general stores, poissonneries (fish), patisseries, boucheries (butchers), and boulangeries (bakeries). The courtyard in front of the Pompidou is alive with buskers and homeless people! Just beyond that is the Marais shopping district including Les Halles. It is also not far to walk to Notre Dame and the river. We've had a fabulous time. I must say, though, that the French are disgustingly slim. Most of the overweight people are tourists (you can ... read more

Hi all, I think I must have died and gone to heaven! I would like to take this opportunity to let my work colleagues know that I may not be back for some time ...... As our plane flew into Heathrow we were surrounded by fog. Quite a let-down. I remembered this fog well from 19 years ago - but that was Winter! The girls were quite disappointed. "I thought this was Summer" "You said it would be warm" they complained. To be fair, it was only 8 in the morning, but it hardly looked like a Summer's day!! We picked up our hire car. Not the car we'd booked, though, but an Alfa Romeo! It took some time to figure out the ignition system - no turning of a key required to start this ... read more

Dear friends and blogbrowsers, We arrived in Bangkok feeling rather grimey after our overnight train trip from Chiang Mai. We had a breakfast of iced coffee/chocolate and pastries at the train station. It had been weeks since I'd had a good coffee! We had some time to kill (5 hours!) before we could check into our hotel. There was a tourist information centre at the railway station that was quite helpful and suggested we go to see the Golden Buddha as it was walking distance away. We checked our bags into the locker room and went for a wander. For those of you who've not been, the Golden Buddha is 505 Tonnes of solid gold!! It had been covered with an outer layer so that invaders (Burmese) did not know that it was gold. The ... read more

Dear friends and blogbrowsers, These are the last few days of our visit to Chiang Mai. I think that if I am reincarnated, and can't be Australian, I would like to be a resident of this charming city. It has such a homey feel, the people are so friendly and sweet. The touting is much gentler than in Patong Beach. And people generally seem healthy (ie barely on overweight person) and well-adjusted. We decided to visit the Doi Suthep, the temple on the hill overlooking the city. We found a sawngthaew driver by the name of 'Matthew' who waits outside the Top North guesthouse (Soi 2 Moon Muang Rd). He was wonderful. If you're ever there, say hello from us! He took us up the mountain. He explained to us that it was World Buddha ... read more

Sa wad dee ka from Chiang Mai, We are staying here in a small guest house “T-Room Guesthouse" for about $20 per room. It is ... but quite adequate. The beds are as hard as rocks - but perhaps that is Thai style?! We are staying within the city walls - in the south east corner, just far enough from the main road and restaurants to be delightfully quiet, but on the edge of an area with many other guesthouses with lovely open-air breakfast/dining rooms facing the street (ours doesn't have that) and many different types of small restaurants, internet cafes, laundry services and massage rooms. In the other direction are Thai homes with people working as tailors, etc, and small local shops. It is quite charming. On arrival at the airport we had to ... read more

Sa wad dee ka from Phuket! We've been on the go almost every minute of the day since we left so this is the first chance I've had to post. The trip over was uneventful, but such a novel experience for the girls that they were fascinated even by the in-flight safety demonstration! Zoe has found it rather hard going at times, though, as she has been way outside her comfort zone. She declared on the morning of departure that she thought she'd rather stay home with her friends! She became quite distressed as we descended into Bangkok with ear and stomach pains. That's been our only low time. It has been great watching the girls sharing these experiences and looking out for each other. We spent the first night in Bangkok and the next ... read more
