Xin chao! Onwards to Hanoi!! We flew to Hanoi on the eve of independence day so the streets were absolutely heaving with people and scooters and the complete extreme from Luang Prabang! If I'm honest it was really quite overwhelming so we ducked into a rooftop restaurant and observed the chaos from behind a bowl of beef pho noodle soup! Deeelish! The next morning we set our alarm for 7 so we could pack in an entire day of sight seeing as we didn't have long in Hanoi. We started with muesli and Vietnamese drip coffee (the first decent coffee in a while) and took a cyclo (bicycle taxi) to the one pillar pagoda which is exactly what it sounds like - a pagoda build on a single column rather than 4 legs. We then walked ... read more

Hi guys, I've added a whole load of pics from the waterproof camera to the last blog so if you have a chance, check them out! Thanks, Sabaii dii! So we crossed across the friendship bridge into Vientiane, Laos. Vientiane is the new Capital city, it has a lot of history and interesting historical buildings left over from the French, but with the time constraints we decided to head straight up to Vang Vieng for some more adventurous activities. Laos apparently holds the not so prestigious title for the most bombed country in the world and has been in a constant struggle over the last century. Laos is thankfully more stable now with tourism and other industries flourishing. The minivan stopped along the way to pick up locals and one got on with a basket of ... read more

Sawsadii Kaa! By complete coincidence we arrived in Bangkok on the first day of Sonkgran festival (Thai new year) which is basically a 5 day long giant water fight!!! It's absolute carnage! Hoards and hoards of people young and old take to the streets armed with water pistols and some kind of corn flour/ water mix which they smear on your face as a symbol of good luck. The water guns are fine but the buckets of ice cold water dumped down your back are a different ball game! There is absolutely no way of staying dry and as the old adage goes: "If you can't been 'em, join 'em" So we armed ourselves with the biggest water pistols we could find, waterproofed our valuables and dived into the carnage! I was slightly worried about Hannah ... read more

Wow! What a contrast! I made the 6 hr journey from possibly the poorest place I've every stayed in to stay with mum and dad in The Dwarkias hotel in Kathmandu- possibly the nicest place I've ever stayed at. The contrasts were so vast that I can hardly compare them. The hotel is built in the traditional Nepali style with original Newari carvings and artwork everywhere you look. The owner saved various wood carvings from derelict buildings and built them into his hotel. The place is absolutely stunning, a little haven from the chaos that is Kathmandu! Mum and dad completely spoilt me, treated me to a deep tissue massage -extremely painful but necessary, they made me feel special and loved. We spent the afternoon in the traveller hub called Thamel, a spot of shopping, dads ... read more

As most of you already know, I've taken the plunge and jumped off the engineering ladder hoping to land in the family business pond... in June. If that doesn't spell 'sabbatical' I don't know what does!!! 4 months break sounds wonderful! Yes please! Dubai warps your mind, and your percetion of notmality, its a wonderful bubble but I'm very aware that we have it easy. I was looking for a way to put my tax-free money to good use when I stumbled across this School Reconstruction project in Nepal. For the next 4 weeks I'm going to a small jungle village not far from the Chitwan National Park, living with a host family and helping to build a school. There is something quite refreshing in the irony that there are over half a million Nepalis living ... read more

Namaste! Once again I've ventured off the beaten track to see a more simple way of life. Getting out to a culture like this, for me is like pressing a reset button. You get so caught up in Dubai with your career, nice food, fancy bars, shopping malls, fast cars and massive buildings. It's amazing that a 4 hour flight is all it takes to realise what's important. No matter where I go in the world it seems true that less is more. Those that have a few woven leaves over their head do truly seem to smile more... Enough of my spiritual realisation and back to our journey. We got up at 3:45 to get to the airport by 5 and catch our flight. Budget airlines always sting you with terrible flight times! After a ... read more

One water and two thali's please has become a favourite saying of ours in India. Once again I'm talking about food but we all know i'm obsessed but so are the Indians to it's all good! We took the over night train from Goa to Mumbai and arrived early in the morning, everything was still closed but a sleepy tuk tuk driver agreed to take us to the Airport to get our bags back. Once there, we struggled to get IN the airport, struggled to find anyone from Sri Lanka Air, sat and waited outside their office for 5 hrs asking so every Raj-Babu-and-Janesh that walked by if they knew anything about Sri Lanka Air with no success so I finally asked Aeroflot if they had any idea. Aeroflot?" who would have thought it? The guy ... read more

Namaste! 53 hours, 4 flights, 4 different airlines and one broken plane later Holly and I made it to Bombay! Unfortunately...our bags weren't so lucky... Having been in 4 different countries over the past 2 days our bags could be literally anywhere! We filled out a lost baggage form with Sri lankan Airways and set off bewildered into the Jungle of taxi wallah's where we started the never-ending game of no thankyou. Despite promises to call us and keep us informed of any updates we heard nothing for the next few days untill saturday morning we recieved a phone call informing us that the bags had in fact arrived in Chenni and when would we be collecting them! I explained AGAIN that we were in Mumbai not Chenni. (32hrs train ride away) We were promised that ... read more

6 weeks in Bella, over 6000 Km, 6 million amazing experiences, about 6 dollars left in our bank accounts and you will all be pleased to know, more than 6 showers!! Anyway... after thinking my senses had been overloaded by stunning Fraser island we set off again towards Airley Beach (the gateway to the Whitsundays). Most travellers get the 14hr overnight bus from Rainbow to Airley missing out on spots such as Town of 1770, Agness Waters, Hervey Bay, Bundaburg and other lovely little beach towns along the coast. The great thing about being in Bella is that Holly and I get the best of both worlds, we have found that we love exploring all the tiny one-wallaby-towns but every so often we like being around other backpackers doing the traveller thing. Airley Beach was a ... read more

There is a Buddist saying It's not the number of breaths we take on this earth but the number of moments that take our breath away. We have been amazed so many times since we've been away that i've lost count. From Bangkok temples to Chaing Mai jungles, from'Full moon parties to Sky dives, bungy jumps, beautiful Milford Sound, huge mountains in NZ to apostles on the great Ocean Road, the list is endless. Amazing...The point I was trying to make is that the last few days on Fraser Island have completly blown me away. Fraser is just off the Coast of Rainbow beach in Queensland, it is a complete phenomenen of nature. It's a massive sand Island which has turqoise fresh water lakes next to pure white sand, green lakes just over dunes, rainforests that ... read more
