We realize that it has been quite a while since our last entry, but we were enjoying ourselves too much to make any new entries. You might think that 3 weeks is a lot of time to spend in such a relatively small area, but we ran out of time and could have stayed longer because this was our favorite place of the whole trip. We are lumping all of NZ into one blog entry, but there is a definite difference between the north and south islands. Fortunately, we flew into Christchurch in the south island to start our New Zealand adventures and spent the bulk of our time on that island. There really is no comparison between the north and south. The south is a place of amazing natural beauty and beckons you to be ... read more

For those of you who have been keeping up with our blog entries, you know that in the last entry from Melbourne we said we were off to Tasmania and didn't know what to expect. Well, this is another one of those places where we were soooooo glad that we did because we both loved it! We rented a car for a week and decided just to drive around and stop at places that looked good to us. We made it a whopping 15 minutes outside of Hobart before we stopped for the night in a town called Sorrell. We got the spa room in a place called The Barracks, which you can guess by the name what it used to be, but is now a quaint B&B. I think it was built in 1829. A ... read more

For this entry, we are going to keep the text short and provide you with a lot of photos. This is mainly because we don't have tons to say about Melbourne and I'm not really in the mood right now to write a novel. So with that said..... We thought Melbourne was an average big city that you can find in a lot of countries. It did have an international flair from the people to the food. We included a few photos of the different food cuisines that we had to give you an idea of what can be found there. We stayed at a hotel near Chinatown, so we got to walk past those restaurants most every day, but we don't have any photos from there. I think that's because we are usually so anxious ... read more

CAIRNS Colorful Cairns. Whether it was the fish and coral in the Great Barrier Reef, the flowers, the stained glass panels of St. Monica's Cathedral, the food, gelato or the characters we met, Cairns was colorful. Our biggest reason for going to Cairns was to get to the Barrier Reef. One day we went out for some diving and snorkeling. We want to mention the outfit that we chose because they were really, really good. We went on the Sea Quest with the Deep Sea Divers Den crew. It was a newer fast boat with a small number of passengers and a fairly large crew, so we got a lot of personal attention and it only took us an hour and a half to get to the Reef, so we had more time in the water ... read more

Hello from down under! We are having a great time. The weather has been very nice - very warm but with a breeze. It is, however, the fly season. Those pesky little buggers fly around you and follow you as you are walking. You can slap at them all you want (which is what is affectionately known as the "Aussie wave"), but they know what they are doing as they are professionals. Perhaps I could teach them a little something about beer. We purchased a three day pass that allowed us to board the Sydney Explorer and Bondi Beach Explorer busses. The pass also granted us access to all bus, train, tram, and ferry systems in the city. It was a great deal. The Explorer busses took a little over two hours from the first to ... read more

Visited Countries Map As some of you may know, we originally planned on going to India. We had some visa issues and couldn't go there, so we had to find somewhere east of Greece and west of Australia that didn't have any visa requirements AND that Delta or one of its partners flew AND they had seats available for us in the time frame that we needed. As I told Doug, "things happen for a reason" and we were able to find seats to Thailand, albeit in coach. We have been so spoiled flying in business class, that we considered not going, and during the third flight of the day that itself was 10.5 hours, we weren't the happiest of campers, BUT it would have been a huge mistake to skip it because we love ... read more

While we were in Athens, we went to a tourist agent for tickets to a Greek island and walked out with a full-blown booking to Egypt! We arrived at the Cairo airport very early on Thursday morning and had a short layover before we caught a flight to Sharm El Sheikh, a city on the Red Sea. We caught a beautiful sunrise at the airport there before we went to the resort. We stayed at an "all-inclusive" (more on that later) resort for a few days of diving, snorkeling and R&R. We were on a boat full of Russians and one German guy who looked a lot like Jacques Cousteau; he had the hat and everything. Doug signed up for 2 dives and I had 2 snorkels; unfortunately, Doug only went on the first dive. Due ... read more

Wow, now this is a city unlike any other we have seen so far. We arrived on Saturday night, got checked into the hotel and headed out to explore the city. We were on sensory overload due to the lights, traffic, noise and number of people on the street. We had a travel guide with the street names listed in it, but knew when we asked the first local where the street signs were on the buildings and he rolled his eyes and laughed, that we were in for another adventure. It took us a couple of days to get our bearings, but after travelling down the same streets and taking buses to the sites, we were able to navigate better. We covered a lot of ground again and were able to see a lot of ... read more

Doug and I met up in Vienna and caught a flight to Athens. We were grateful for the warm, sunny weather, which made it more enjoyable to be out and about. We got up early the first day and were at it by 8:00 am. We went to the Acropolis first, where you can see the pictures of the Parthenon, Athena Nike Temple and the two theatres. There is massive restoration taking place there now, so we only took side-view shots of the Parthenon and couldn't get a good shot of any structure there. It was probably due to this construction going on, but our impression of the Acropolis as a whole is that it didn't meet our expectations. Based on photos in magazines and also the Olympic coverage with the aerial shots, that wasn't what ... read more

I made it to Bratislava and enjoyed my time there. It seemed like a smaller, less hectic version of Prague. It had some great architecture, great food (more on that later) and the people were very nice. For me, going to Slovakia was one half of a journey to see where my ancestors came from. Poland was from my dad's side and Slovakia was from my mom's. Although I didn't make it to the towns where they came from, I got a better understanding of why they were the people that they were. My grandmother told me that I was Slovak, not Czech, because the Slovak people are more humble (save your comments, please) and come from a more rural area than the Czechs. I went to an exhibit at the Castle entitled "Until the bride ... read more
