Shawne says... Miles Today: 13.4 Total Miles: 63.1 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 2 We started off today from Viejas Indian Reservation with little to no motivation. Packing up camp was a slow process as I found it very hard to concentrate on the tasks at hand. The climb out of the reservation was extremely difficult, and it was very steep. I had no energy in my legs. After stopping several times to rest, we made it up the road to the Interstate. We stopped to stretch, and I felt the blood start to flow freely through my body. We now [View Full Entry]

Jo says... Mileage today: 21.3 Total miles: 49.7 Flats today: 0 Total flats: 2 Today we climbed, and climbed, and climbed. This had to be the longest 21.3 miles we've ever seen. It took us most of the day to gain 2,000 feet in elevation. We took many roadside breaks for water and powerbars. My knee wasn't taking kindly to the abuse of such a climb, so Shawne kindly adopted about 10 pounds of my gear. He graciously carried it all the way to camp while I limped along behind him. We met an odd fellow on the way, his teeth [View Full Entry]

End of Day 2

Jo says... Mileage today: 28.4 Total miles: 28.4 Flats today: 2 Total Flats: 2 The marine layer was just beginning to lift when we dipped our rear tires in the ocean and waved farewell to Shawne's dad at Ocean Beach, CA (around noon, of course). Road construction and steep hills greeted us almost instantly. Shawne got the first flat of the trip on his BOB trailer, and conveniently, it was right in front of a Roberto's Taco Shop. Roberto's is Shawne's very favorite restaurant in the universe, so it worked out nicely. After stuffing ourselves with great Mexican [View Full Entry]

Jo says... Delayed already. Shawne is sick...and he NEVER gets sick. The creeping crud has tightened a noose around him. Fighting off this cold (I suspect it may be bronchitis, strep throat, allergies, or a combination thereof...) has delayed our departure. Poor guy. I've never seen him sick before, so seeing him prone and miserable is painful even for me. Yesterday, we drove to Reno to return a pair of sandals to Sportsman's Warehouse. To kill two birds with one stone, we packed the car with a load to take to storage on the way. Once we got to Reno, we [View Full Entry]

As you all know, Shawne and I are riding our bicycles from San Diego to the Florida Keys. (Yes, our "pedal bikes"!) Though this is my third journey cross-country on a bicycle, it is Shawne's first, and I am both thrilled and proud to be by his side. We acquired our maps through Adventure Cycling, and are prepared to depart on September 20th to San Diego. We hope to hit the road by the 23rd. We are taking few creature comforts, but the gear we have will leave us more than comfortable on our trek. It is odd that a journey's [View Full Entry]
