Jo and Shawne say... Day: 44 Mileage Today: 37.0 Total Mileage: 1791.55 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 44 When we woke up, it was mostly dark. The sun was just starting to warm the horizon as we rolled up the tent. We ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for breakfast and got our gear in order. We'd ridden our bikes up the dirt hill and to the gate when we found that it was closed. It wasn't locked, though, so we quickly opened it and snuck out, closing it behind us. We rode over a few more steep hills and past a Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue Sanctuary. We figured these folks were probably friends of Steve Irwin. The road was getting better; the hills weren't as steep. We rode into Blanco and stopped at a diner ... read more

Jo and Shawne say... Day: 43 Mileage Today: 42.0 Total Mileage: 1754.55 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 44 The dew was terrible this morning, and we had to pack our gear wet. We ate some Mexican food at a little cafe, and Jo asked the waitress if the town was called Center Point because it was the middle of Texas. "Nah," she replied, "it's just the middle point between Kerrville and Comfort, ma'am." We passed an old school that had been very well kept, and middle school kids were playfully chasing one another throughout the grounds. They yelled at us as we went by... "Nice bikes!", one called. "I love America!", shreiked another. Our favorite, however, was a small boy who waved at us in passing, and when we waved back, he yelled, "Piss Off!" It ... read more

Jo and Shawne say... Day: 42 Mileage Today: 61.4 Total Mileage: 1712.55 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 44 We woke up at 5:30 am with plans to escape before the rangers showed up for work. We cooked a quick breakfast of top ramen and pancakes with no butter or syrup. As we were putting breakfast away and packing up, we were a bit louder than we needed to be since our neighbors had been loud, boisterous, and drunk all night. We accidentally-on-purpose dropped the cookset several times, and simply had to shake the dew off the tent...four times. Shawne made some loud comments about how rude it is to walk right through someone else's camp to use the restroom. The neighbors started stirring, and as we were finishing packing, they again walked through our camp several ... read more

Jo and Shawne say... Day: 41 Mileage Today: 43.5 Total Mileage: 1651.15 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 44 It was drizzling when we woke up. Chug and Sandi met us outside and asked if we were sure we wanted to leave and brave the weather. We were pretty sure, in fact, that we didn't want to leave, but leave we must. Camp Wood was a paradise, but we didn't want to overstay our welcome, and the road ahead of us wasn't getting any shorter. We left, waving goodbye to our new friends. We experienced the same too-warm-but-too-cold sensation, and had to stop several times within the first few miles to either don or discard clothing items. We finally found comfortable outfits and cycled on...uphill. We climbed a fairly steep incline, and had risen about 800 feet ... read more

Jo and Shawne say... Day 39 & 40 November third and fourth, 2006 Two Day Mileage: 3.6 Total Mileage: 1607.65 Flats: 0 Total Flats: 44 When we awoke, we knew that today was chore day. Chug and Sandi let us use their laundry detergent to wash our clothes, so we did all the laundry. Jo ran into town and bought some more groceries, and we walked the banks of the beautiful river, talking of snorkeling if it had been just a little bit warmer. It was dreary and threatened rain for most of the day, though the sun did poke it's head out for a few hours. Jo put her new tires on her bike. We used the internet and updated some of the blog (Thanks, Chug!). Shawne wrote more in the journal, and we headed ... read more

Jo and Shawne say... Mileage Today: 54.4 Total Mileage: 1604.05 Flats Today: 2 Total Flats: 44 Day 38 We rose early, knowing we really wanted to leave this strange place. Of course, Jo had a flat on her BOB trailer before we left. She took it apart, but couldn't find the hole anywhere, even after running the tube under the faucet. She put the tire back together and we finished packing. No luck, the tire was flat again by the time we were ready to leave. An elderly woman approached with her little white dog. She explained that she'd rescued him, and told us this Fort was the best place and the country to retire. She was telling us about membership fees and the price of land, but used terms like "750" and "55", when she ... read more

Jo and Shawne say... Mileage Today: 38.8 Total Mileage: 1549.65 Flats Today: 0 Total Flats: 42 Day 37 We slept in, and made the most of our first purchased hotel room. It was a free continental breakfast, so we ate...and ate...and ate some more. Jo had a flat tire before we even left the room. The sun was high, and it was hot and muggy by the time we left the hotel. We'd run into our first bout of humidity yesterday, and we doubt it will stop until we get back to Nevada. We headed to the bike shop, in search of Armadillo tires, which according to other cyclists we've met, are impenetrable. After much discussion, we decided to purchase four new tires for $35.00 each. These tires are a bit wider than the ones we've ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 36 Miles Today: 58.25 Total Mileage: 1,510.85 Flats Today: 2 Total Flats: 42 What started as a simple restroom stop turned into an educational experience as we entered the Judge Roy Bean Visitor's Center first thing this morning. The Judge labeled himself "The Law West of the Pecos" in the late 1800's. He had one law book which he never opened, and he dished out 'justice' as he saw fit. We toured the "Jersey Lilly", a combination saloon/billiard hall and courtroom that, along with the town, Judge Bean named after Lilly Langtry, a famous English Actress. Jo loved the Judge instantly. See, the Judge was madly in love with Miss Lilly, and even called his own house and "Opera House" to try to lure her to the area. He wrote her ... read more

Day 35 Mileage Today: 62.3 Total Mileage: 1452.6 Flats Today: 2 Total Flats: 40 Tubes Used Today: 2 Total Tubes Used: 8 Tires Used Today: 1 Total Tires Used: 2 After cleaning up camp, we travelled back into town to find a breakfast spot. Most of the buildings were unoccupied and the restaurants we did find were closed. We were afraid it was going to be another gas station breakfast when we spotted a building with a sandwich board on the sidewalk that simply read, "OPEN". A banner across the store front read, "Welcome Hunters", but there was no other signage to indicate what the business was. An old woman waved to us from inside the store, so we decided to check it out. Once inside, we realized it was an eating ... read more

Shawne and Jo say... Day 34 Miles Today: 89.2 Total Mileage: 1,390.3 Flats Today: 2 Total Flats: 38 It was very difficult to pack up this morning. We really didn't want to leave Alpine. We stripped the bed and put the sheets in the wash. We gave the kitchen a once-over and turned on the dishwasher. Walking out to the backyard, we slowly pushed our bikes through the side gate, taking a load of trash out to the curb. We took a last look at Elizabeth's beautiful home, thinking of her and the other good people we've met on this journey. We think that we have fallen in love with this town. Yesterday, we actually priced Amtrak tickets from Alpine, TX to San Diego, thinking that we may just end our trip and get the car ... read more
