July 31, 2009 We left Estes Park this morniing at about 10:00 mt. time. I am always sad at leaving the mountains behind. The worst part is, driving through Eastern Wyoming. I have to say, the Black Hills are a nice antidote to Eastern Wyoming. What do the residents of flat, dry, treeless, desolate places like about them? Someone please tell me. We are spending the last night of the trip in Kadoka, South Dakota. Our bathroom is fabulously large. Unfortunately, the neighbors, who happen to be bikers on their way to Sturgis, are drunk and we can hear them through the wall About a 10 hour drive for Lobelia, 7 1/2 for Podo. Lobelia can't wait to see Milo and the dogs, horses and even the chickens. ... read more

Today, we woke up to fog. There was a slight possibility of sun at first, but that quickly dispersed. Podo eventually decided to go for it - hike to the summit of (one of the) Twin Sisters Peaks. He did a great job, finishing it in about 3 hours (the book says 4). Lobelia read Fellowship of the Ring and tended the fire. We are at Starbucks right now entering the blog for today and soon we will go back to our campsite and feast on mac 'n cheese and mashed potatoes (I know, it sounds weird). Tomorrow am we start back, going through the Black Hills and ending up at Kadoca SD for the night. One more blog entry and then home to MN. We like MN, even though it doesn't have mountains.... read more

July 29 Today we left Eagle and went over to the trail to Hanging Lake. It was a lot of work, but worth it in the end. Then we got into the car and drove back up to Estes Park. It went from sunny and warm to rainy to foggy and rainy. It might as well be Wisconsin, we can't see the mountains. Shane was going to hike up the Twin Sisters Peak, but if it is still foggy tomorrow, why bother? Wish us a dry night. :-(... read more

July 28 Lobelia woke up first in the Land of Never Summer. 'We need to leave this land of never summer,' she thought. Looking up at the hill, she saw a black blob. 'That looks just like a moose'. It WAS a moose. After the moose excitement, Podo and Lobelia packed up and got out of that cold rainy place. They went up north a bit and hiked up to a meadow on Green Mountain and then a little further North to hike hear the Colorado River. They then drove toward Vail, hoping to find a good campsite and rest. (Uncle Arvid didn't answer the phone, by the way). They drove to Avon to look for a WIFI hot spot so they could get directions to the campgrounds (Vail is crazy land!). It turned out that ... read more

July 27, 2009 Lobelia and Podo set out from the park early and took the treacherous "Trail Ridge Drive" across the peaks of Rocky Mt. Nat'l Park. Lobelia was driving and at several points, the cold ice of fear was running through her veins. She wanted to quit and ask someone else to drive their car over to the other side. She pushed the thoughts aside and eventually finished the trip. At the peak, Podo and Lobelia got out of the car and hiked quite a ways up the Ute trail because several people said there were Elk. By the time we got there, they were gone. It was, however, a memorable hike because Podo got to see the Alpine Zone of vegetation and several Marmots. We kept meeting hikers who wer older than Lobelia, so ... read more

July 26 We hiked part of the day to Ypsilon Lake. The low O2 and strenuous terrain is getting to me. We had a downpour last night, but the tent stayed dry. We both love Smartwool socks. Shane and I bought stainless steel water bottles today. I know, we don't need more water bottles. We are on the move South tomorrow. As usual, we don't know about the WIFI situation, so we will see about posting something tomorrow. I got on with Qwest today. I saw a FABULOUS blue jay - blue body with a black head Steller's Jay. ... read more

Today we traveled from Spearfish SD to Estes Park. We saw some beautiful scenery in the Black Hills. The usual flat, dry, boring land in most of Wyoming. There were views of mountains in the distance. Lobelia and Podo saw the Kingdom of Mordor from Wyoming. It looked menacing. Now that we're in it, it is not so bad. We have a good campsite the next two nights. This one is not so good, It's like having strangers in your living room. Also, there are horses next door. /Their manure stinks. Podo says it's because they eat meat and swig whiskey on the trail. Tomorrow we move, but will not have WIFI, so it is doubtful if I can post new pictures. July 25 We are currently in the Starbucks in Estes Park, charging the phones, ... read more

Lobelia picked up Podo at 8:40 am. We drove down I-35 and turned West at I-90. We stopped in Blue Earth for old times sake, having attended the Norwegian Fjord Horse show there in the past. The horses had already gone home, so we didn't see any. Shane attempted the clutch, but it didn't go well. We will try again tomorrow. We are listening to the Lord of the Rings trilogy on CD. Curiosities seen on the way: Guy on a motorcycle with a hockey stick. Why does one need a hockey stick in July? Jolly Green Giant statue. It never ceases to interest me. Big green dinosaur. Sign said "Scenic Overlook". We couldn't figure out what was scenic about a big flat treeless plain. Minnesotans don't get this. We need to see lakes, cliffs, mountains, ... read more
