Before we left home, my Grade 5 teacher back in Melbourne had given my parents a large pile of textbooks and several reams of school work exercises for me to complete, and I was supposed to spend a couple of hours every day while we were on the ship ploughing through all of this. I have absolutely no recollections whatsoever of doing any study at all. I'm sure my very diligent parents wouldn't have let me off the hook, so I suspect I've just wiped this unpleasant memory from my mind. I do however remember thinking as we got closer to home that this idyllic five month trip was nearly over, and that I would very soon have to return to the discipline and drudgery of school. I was looking forward to seeing my friends again ... read more

The cruise wouldn't have been complete without the obligatory children's fancy dress competition. I remember Mum discovering an old acquaintance of hers amongst the Himalaya‘s passengers, and this poor lady then somehow became lumbered with the responsibility for kitting me up for the show. I‘m fairly sure she didn’t travel the high seas armed with cabin loads of suitcases packed full of fancy dress outfits, but this didn't seem to slow her down too much. She managed to assemble enough suitable gear to make me bear at least a passing resemblance to a youngster from the backstreets of Shanghai, complete with long thin oriental moustache. If the pictures of the event are anything to go by, a lot of my young shipmates' parents must have known before we set sail that a fancy dress night was ... read more

Middle East » Yemen » Aden September 21st 1964

As the Himalaya approached Aden I remember thinking that this was by far the most desolate looking place that I'd ever laid eyes on. This view appears to have been shared by P&O's pamphlet on the port, the introduction to which is "First sighting of Aden from the sea is uninviting, when the hot sun, reflected from the yellow volcanic rock, gives the whole coast a parched and unwelcoming appearance." Mum and Dad must have decided that it looked a bit safer than Port Said, because we happily went ashore, and then walked along what I remember as a single row of small shops on the waterfront. There were camels and goats everywhere, but virtually no trees or other greenery. I don't remember there being overly many people around either, despite the pamphlet's assertion that its ... read more

We set sail from London on P&O's SS Himalaya on 11 September. Mum and Dad had booked the Himalaya because it was the very same ship that they had returned from England on in 1955, with six week old me in tow. Mum was apparently quite sick after my birth, so I never got to go to their home in the London suburb of Roehampton, but instead went with Mum straight from Guy's Hospital to the ship. I was told many times during my childhood that every one of the SS Himalaya's 1955 passengers knew that young Master David Sheehan was on board, as according to Mum I didn't stop screaming from the time we left London until we docked back in Melbourne. This was despite my parents trying to isolate the ship's company from the ... read more

We caught the train from Paris to Lucerne in Switzerland, via Basel. We then climbed aboard a ferry across Lake Lucerne to the small village of Vitznau, where we stayed for about a week at the Vitznauerhof Hotel on the waterfront. The hotel is still there, and Issy and I visited it when we stayed in Lucerne in 2017. My favourite memory of the original trip is catching a very small fish from the hotel's jetty, and Dad then getting the hotel staff to cook it up and serve it to us for dinner in the dining room. I insisted that we reenact the fishing part of the scene on a very cold and wet day in 2017, using a stick as a rod. I'm not sure where the rod in the original scene came from. ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Antony June 25th 1964

Evidence from passport stamps suggests that we made two forays into France. On the first of these it looks like I went with Dad in late June, with Mum then joining us later, and the three of us then all making our way from there on to Switzerland. It seems that the three of us all then went back for a second time for a week in late August. The Channel Tunnel was only a pipe dream (no pun intended) in 1964, and on at least one of these trips we caught the overnight train from London to Paris. I remember being awoken in the middle of the night by the noise of the train being loaded onto the ferry, and then waking up in the morning to find us rolling through the fields of northern ... read more

1964 Diary Entry "The next morning we got up and had breakfast and then we started to pack for that day we were leaving for London. At about 10 o'clock we got a taxi to the airport. There we had our baggage checked and then we went into the flight waiting room. Soon after that we were called aboard the plane. When we got in we prepared for take off. After take-off we rose and levelled off and after about an hour we landed in London. There we went through passport control and customs. Mum saw Auntie Beth out the door. After we'd finished we went out and saw Auntie Beth." .... and that's where the diary ends. Passport stamps and other assorted evidence tells me that we stayed in London until 11 September, interspersed with ... read more

1964 Diary Entry "The next morning we got up and dressed and went down to breakfast. After breakfast we started to pack for that day we were leaving for Copenhagen. At about 11 o'clock we caught a taxi to the airport. When we got there we had our baggage checked and then we went into the flight waiting room. Soon afterwards we were called aboard our S.A.S aircraft. When we got in we fastened our seatbelts and pre-pared for take off. Then we took off. We slowly rose and levelled off. By that time we were well above the clouds so I couldn't see anything. About half an hour later we started to go down. Finally we saw Denmark. Then we landed. 1964 Diary Entry "The next morning we got up and had breakfast. After breakfast we went and had a walk in the Borghese Gardens. After walking for some time we came and started to pack for that day we were leaving for Frankfurt. After packing and paying our bill we caught a taxi to the airport. When we got there we had our baggage checked and then we went into the flight waiting room. After waiting for some time we were called out to the aircraft. After boarding it we fastened our seat belts and pre-pared for take off. By the way Mummy didn't like the idea of flying "Alitalia" which was the name of the line. When we got there we had our baggage checked, had our passports stamped and then we went to the flight waiting room. At about 1 o'clock we were called into the aircraft. Then we started to go down and about ten minutes later we landed in Rome. There we went through passport control, health and customs and then a man in a private car drove us to the Excelsior Hotel.
