Issy's got a really bad cold, which sucks for her. She‘s taking every medication known to man plus some that haven't been invented yet, but all to no avail. I head off along the clifftop path towards Fira town while she rests up. There’s a cruise ship in and it gets progressively more crowded as I proceed. I hear a lady complaining that she has to climb too many steps to get to her hotel; I think that maybe she should have chosen a slightly flatter destination. It's now insanely crowded, and I hear a tour group leader constantly yelling "number one group this way", so that his charges don't all get lost. The whole town is a series of narrow alleyways. I‘ve got a map, but it's not a lot of use because none of ... read more

The first leg of our flight is a mind numbing fourteen hours to Doha. The Doha airport is massive, modern and very plush but it seems that someone forgot to order quite enough seats. Fortunately we only have two hours to kill. The airport has a large children's playground. The temptation to get on a swing and let off some excess energy after fourteen hours cramped in a tiny seat is almost overwhelming, but I'm sure if I did this I'd be breaking multiple laws. I've heard some not so good stories about what they do to law breakers here in the Middle East, so getting arrested before we've reached our first destination wouldn't seem to be a particularly great way to start things off. We crawl onto the plane for the next leg to Athens. ... read more

This is the first time that we will have left our three offspring at home on their own for more than two weeks, and Issy's finding the thought of this very stressful. Emma's not too relaxed about it either, and if Coco knew that his precious mother was about to desert him for two months he'd be howling the house down by now. Troy's gone away with some friends so Scott and Emma drive us to the airport. We find out later that Emma started crying when she got back to the car. We're very glad we didn't know about this at the time; she never cries.... read more

Asia » Philippines » Boracay January 15th 2014

Next stop was Boracay, which I see now regularly tops "World's Best Islands" lists in a lot of the world's best known travel magazines. I wanted to include it on the itinerary for our Philippines honeymoon back in 1989, but was dissuaded by our travel agent. It was virtually unknown in those days; I think only backpackers went there. I was told that the trip there would have involved a two hour drive in a jeep along an almost non-existent road, followed by a hairy ride in a small rickety boat. ...and if we'd managed to survive that, we'd arrive to find there was no electricity anywhere on the island. The agent said that I might think this was alright, but suggested I spare a thought for my new bride, and whether she could cope with ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Manila January 7th 2014

We headed off for a short family sojourn in the Philippines before the start of the academic year. Issy and I had honeymooned there way back in 1989 and hadn't been back since. We relied on our ever reliable travel agent, Family Affair Travel, to make all the arrangements. We hoped they'd done a better job than Thomas Cook, who'd arranged the honeymoon. When us newlyweds went to check in at the Manila hotel they'd booked for us it seems they'd decided in their infinite wisdom that we should be in separate rooms. Each to his own I suppose, but this wasn't quite the sort of honeymoon I'd been looking forward to. I think I remember reading about the collapse of Thomas Cook about a year ago. If they were relying on honeymooners for a lot ... read more

We were driven from Khao Lak down to Phuket, and then caught the ferry across to Ko Phi Phi Don where we spent the second part of our Thai sojourn. There's something about signs at Thai tourist hotspots that's always brought a smile to my face, and I got an instant reminder of this as we got off the ferry. The large board hanging above the entrance to the pier instructed us to "Funnel into out the Passenger". Hopefully we complied. The rubbish bin in reception at the resort was labelled "Poisoning Garbage". Hmm. Probably best not to let any of that leak into the ocean. Finding the resort restaurant on the first night proved to be a bit of challenge - there were two signs to it on the same post, one pointing to the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Lak December 14th 2012

The school and university years had ended so we set off for a two week jaunt in Thailand. We landed in Phuket and were driven an hour or so north to the small beachside town of Khao Lak. The coastal area around the town had been hit harder than any other parts of Thailand in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. The official death toll was around 4,000, but the ever reliable Wikipedia reports that due to lack of reliable census data and the large numbers of undocumented Burmese immigrants it could have been as high as 10,000. There was no shortage of reminders of what had happened here - a tsunami museum, and a brand new early warning system complete with sirens and signs directing people where to go to get to high ground in the ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Tokoriki Island July 19th 2011

Next and final stop was Tokoriki Resort, one of two resorts on Tokoriki Island in the northern Mamanucas. It was adults only. We hadn't been to one of those before so we weren't quite sure what to expect. You had to be at least fourteen before they'd let you stay there. Troy was exactly that, so we only just scraped in. We got off the ferry and walked through the pool area to reception. It was so quiet. We were too scared to open our mouths. Most of the other guests seemed to be floating silently on sunbeds in the pool. Splashing was clearly banned, and we began to wonder whether swimming might be a no-no as well. The guests that weren't in the pool were all lying noislessly on sunbeds, the silence broken only by ... read more

I think we might have become a bit addicted to Fiji. Then again, what's not to get addicted to - balmy weather, palm fringed beaches, super friendly locals..... OK, so they might have the occasional military coup that makes headlines back home, but the locals know which side their bread's buttered on. The coup leaders leave the tourist hotspots well alone, and any visitors who've been there during any of these so-called uprisings have apparently scarcely been aware that they were even happening. Now I know that if you travel often enough eventually one of your flights is going to be delayed. Our turn had come. We landed in Brisbane to discover that our midnight flight was now not going to leave until 6am. We'd also managed to miss the last transfer bus for the night ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yanuca Island September 29th 2006

Last stop on this sojourn was a return to the Shangri La's Fijian Resort on the Coral Coast. We didn't think that it was all that big when we'd visited it four years earlier, but maybe the builders had just been very busy since. Our room was about as far from the "action" as it was possible to get. I'm pretty sure I remember counting more than 800 steps to dinner one night. I hope we were actually staying in the right resort, and that we hadn't instead accidentally wandered into rooms in the next resort along the coast. Our interconnecting rooms had TVs. Groan. Why is it that teens and pre-teens are so attracted to electronics. We could have stayed at home and saved a lot of money if all they'd wanted to do was ... read more
