Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Mana Island September 23rd 2006

We made a nervous return to Mana Island, keen not to repeat our previous experience of a bure full of monstrous spiders (refer 2002 blog entitled "Sacred Peaks and Eight Legged Freaks"). We booked a first floor room in a still-rustic looking building in the hope that Mana's spiders weren't of the climbing variety. I'm not quite sure what we were thinking - I'm pretty certain there's no such thing as a non-climbing spider. This all quickly became a bit irrelevant. We were told that we couldn't have our chosen room type for the first couple of days, and were instead shown to a ground floor room in a very modern block on the South Beach. We were about as far away from the arachnid infested bure of our previous visit and still be on the ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Castaway Island September 16th 2006

We spent the first week of this sojourn at Castaway Island in the Mamanuca Group off Viti Levu's west coast. It was all very peaceful and relaxing. We spent most of our time lazing on the beach or by the pool, interspersed by the occasional very competitive family table tennis tournament. We still think that this is one of Fiji's very best islands - just rustic enough whilst still being very comfortable, great food, excellent beach and snorkeling, and super friendly and relaxed staff. After a few days Issy and I decided that we'd been overdoing the relaxing just a bit too much, so we made the brave decision to leave our offspring sleeping and head off for a morning hike up to the island's peak. The path was steep and rocky. Would we make it ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands » Mana Island November 2nd 2002

We spent a week at Mana Island, in the Mamanuca Group, off Viti Levu's east coast. It was all fairly rustic and laid back, and we spent most of the week just lazing around, either on the beach or by the pool. The Kids Club did an excellent job of entertaining our offspring, giving Issy and me some much needed "us time". There were excellent beaches on both sides of the island, so if we found ourselves getting a bit sandblasted we just took a short stroll across to the opposite shore. The snorkeling was excellent, with extensive coral reefs teeming with colourful fish close in to the beach. Now I can put up with lazing around for a while as much as the next person, but I do eventually start to get slightly itchy feet. ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yanuca Island October 26th 2002

We arrived in Fiji late in the evening and spent the night in transit at a small motel type establishment that seemed to be almost at the end of the runway. According to everything we'd read, our ultimate destination was a resort on a palm fringed beach complete with pools, bars and restaurants, so we were keen to leave the diesel fumes of our slightly ramshackle overnight accommodation as soon as possible. Convincing Scott of this however proved to be somewhat difficult. He'd discovered that it had a small playground, and nothing was going to drag him away from it, well at least not without a lot of loud protesting. This did leave us contemplating the rather extreme difference in vacation requirements between us and and least one of our offspring. Our holidays would be a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Stradbroke Island October 17th 2002

In late 2002 we decided to take all three of our offspring on a serious overseas adventure together for the first time. We eased them into any potential culture shock by spending the first week still in our homeland, at the Couran Cove Resort on South Stradbroke Island just north of the Gold Coast. It mightn't have been all that far in distance from "the Coast", but we might as well have been on the moon for all the resemblance it bore to the Coast's high rise glitz and glamour. Couran Cove was renowned at the time as one of the country's first eco-friendly resorts, complete with recycled water, solar panels, no petrol powered vehicles (it was only accessible by boat/ferry), no plastic bags, solar hot water and low rise buildings. We stayed in a small ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Palm Cove October 20th 2000

Next stop was the coastal village of Palm Cove, just north of Cairns. We stayed at the massive Novotel Palm Cove Resort, which was about as far removed in style and ambience from the laid back peace and quiet of Great Keppel Island as it was possible to get. The tennis courts, large gym, and golf course with its attached pro shop were a bit wasted on us - the parents of three youngsters under eight. Our only prerequisites were a Kids Club and a pool. We didn't think it was compulsory to get around the resort's jogging track at a satisfactory pace every morning and then follow it up with a brisk 18 holes, but given the numbers of our fellow guests who seemed to be doing exactly that it was hard to be sure. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Great Keppel Island October 12th 2000

We spent a couple of weeks with our three youngsters in the relative warmth of North Queensland. First stop was Great Keppel Island off the coast of Yeppoon. We landed at Rockhampton, and nervously boarded a small six seater aircraft for the short flight out to the island. Eight year old Scott was then very much into anything airborne, and had been salivating for several weeks at the thought of a trip in a small plane. Nine eleven was still a year away, so we probably weren't all that shocked when the pilot asked him if he wanted to take the controls for a few minutes mid-flight. I think Scott knew a bit too much about what could go wrong. He politely declined. No problem thought the pilot, we'll get five year old Emma to fly ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Sanur December 13th 1995

Most Aussies seemed to have been to Bali so we thought we should probably give it a try. We spent a week at Sanur on the island's relatively quiet and protected east coast. We chose somewhere well away from the surf of west coast Kuta in the hope that our toddlers could enjoy the calmer waters. We'd also heard a lot about the drunken antics of our fellow countrymen over in Kuta, and weren't overly keen on experiencing any of that first hand either. Our resort was called the Segara Village. It did indeed seem to us like a series of small Balinese villages with simple single and double storey accommodation set in gardens filled with traditional statues and fountains. Our room was right next to a small pool and we spent a lot of time ... read more

Asia » Singapore December 5th 1995

We spent three nights in Singapore en route from Langkawi to Bali. If our photos are anything to go by, we must have spent most of this time bird watching, so I hope someone else was keeping watch over our two toddler offspring. Neither Issy nor I can claim to be avid birdwatchers, who I always associated with whistles and funny hats, so I suspect we may have been more intent on testing out our photography skills than having any real interest in potential feathered friends. It seems that we did indeed spend some time visiting the Jurong Bird Park, which we now read is the largest such park in Asia, and the second largest in the world. It was opened in 1971 and houses more than 400 species, including several that are endangered. It's also ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Langkawi December 2nd 1995

I was summoned to spend six weeks working in the thriving Sarawakian capital of Kuching in late 1995, and I somehow managed to convince Issy to join me for the last three of those weeks. We had our then two offspring in tow - Scott aged nearly three, and Emma at eleven months. It wasn't still winter in Melbourne, so I'm not sure what Issy was thinking. I'm not too sure what I was thinking either for that matter. We had two interconnecting hotel rooms, but the establishment was an unachievable hike from the city centre. We didn't have access to a car, so Issy was cooped up 24/7 with two restless toddlers whilst I enjoyed the relative luxury of working in an office. I'm not at all sure how she coped. I thought I'd try ... read more
